It's been almost 2 decades since I've been to this office but I wanted to give my honest personal review on my experience here. I had the best experience coming here as a teenager. I grew up with super crooked teeth and always hated how they made me look and feel. I was so happy when my parents were able to afford braces for me and glad we ended up coming to see Dr. Kevin Kieu. Now again, this was a long time ago, but I loved coming to this place. I felt Dr. Kieu was the coolest guy ever, the atmosphere was always so positive, and I loved the way the treatment was making my smile look. He made it appear that being an orthodontist was the best job ever. He's simply the best. I had buck teeth with a gap between my two front teeth. It was bad. Kevin said it was the most challenging case he's ever had. Every other orthodontist said I needed to wear a head gear. Kevin Kieu was the only one that said I didn't have to and he would still make me look good. It's been many years since I left Dr. Kieu's office for the last time after finally getting my braces off. Even so, I still think about my awful experience there from time to time. My younger sister has also gotten braces from Dr. Kieu (more recently than I have) and we both share similar experiences, even begged our mom to stop taking us there and go to another orthodontist but she never listened and trusted his word over ours. As a disclaimer, as I've said it's been like 8 years since I've been there and I'm unaware of any changes (if any) in Dr. Kieu's methods since then, but I felt that I should share my honest experiences to help others decide whether or not Dr. Kieu is the right orthodontist for them. Like many other Viet kids, my mom brought me to Dr. Kieu based on recommendations from her friend. To start, I had really awful crooked teeth so I knew I would have to have braces on for a while. During my private consultation with him, he told me that I would probably only have braces for about 2 years and that I "would always look ugly unless [I] got chin surgery" (no exaggerations here, this is literally what he told me and I still remember it because it really hurt my self-esteem at the time). I was in disbelief that he would say something like that to me and didn't bring it up to my mom and him until later down the line, and even then he denied saying that (to save face in front of my mom, probably) and insisted that I had a beautiful smile thanks to the braces. Anyway... in the beginning, things weren't so bad. I thought Dr. Kieu was kind of funny and personable, treating us almost like family friends in the way he addressed us when we came in for my regular appointments to adjust my braces. Like other reviews have mentioned, he never wore gloves and just stuck his bare hands straight into my mouth to check my teeth and braces. He was also very aggressive in terms of yanking my mouth around and causing pain when using dental tools. After a few sessions, I quickly grew to dread having to come back to his office. I recall the rest of the staff being fairly nice, but Dr. Kieu himself was sort of a wildcard. It might be a personal preference thing, but I would prefer a dentist/orthodontist/doctor to conduct themselves in a professional manner rather than one who might be overly cordial one session and akin to a judgmental family member who comments on your weight somehow not realizing that that's kind of a shitty thing to comment on in another session. In any case, 2.5 years went by. My teeth were still pretty crooked, I was very unconvinced that I would get my braces off any time soon. I asked him about it and he said "oh yes don't worry, we can take them off in X months". I was very very unconvinced by this but stuck it out. A year passes, I ask him again. By this point, I'm at the stage where I've got the rubberbands in to realign my teeth. For the most part, I've been pretty good about keeping the rubberbands on because I wanted these braces off as soon as possible. He once again said "don't worry, only X months and we can take them off!" And once again, despite being utterly unconvinced, I stuck it out because what else was I supposed to do? I ended up having braces for four years. His estimates every step of the way of how long I would have braces were utterly misleading. I don't know why he didn't just outright give me an accurate estimate in the first place. He did the same to my sister, insisting that he can take the braces off in "2 months" nearly every session for over a year. In summary, no I don't recommend this place. If you left a 5 star review here and honestly had a great experience with Dr. Kieu, I'm happy for you. But, speaking for myself and my sister, I can honestly say that we regret ever letting our mom take us here. Remembering our names when we come in seems like a pretty low bar, especially since they can just look up our names prior to our appointment. As an adult having gone to a few other dental professionals now, I have a better understanding of just how awful my experience with Dr. Kieu was and I know the red flags to look out for when seeking out a new dentist or orthodontist. I remember hating coming to his office because after each visit, I could only eat porridge, yes, braces are painful. But the end result couldn't make me happier. I would say, my best features now are my teeth and my smile! Thanks to Dr. Kieu for doing such a great job! Finally after about 3 years my braces are off today!! Thank you Doctor Kevin Kieu and his lovely staff for their awesome service, definitely recommend them. They made the process painless as much as possible. Great at following up with me, I am a business woman and very busy. I was out of country for 6 months but they still keep calling me to remind to go to appt asap. I was supposed to be done in 2 years but now it's been 3 years, it was worth the patience. I really don't like the rubber bands but I have to do it or else my teeth will not go in. I use an electronic toothbrush with a spinhead since my wires were not taken off, it helped tremendously. Yes his personality is funny and witty, he likes to joke sometimes to keep everyone positive, just don't take things personal when he responds or act weird on some days, he works there alot and it can be stressful. Staff is positive, respectful and friendly. I really don't like the drill or painful moments when it happens rarely but they stop when you feel pain and work on a different area before they go back to it. He cut my gums very nicely. Didn't feel any pain cus he use some shots to numb it. Yes, the shots will be painful because it's needles going through your gums but you will be fine!! They are flexible with payments, they let me pay next time when I return if I couldn't pay on that day. For the price and service, it's great!! I took my braces off after two years awhile back and my teeth were still not completely straight so I had to get them again for another two years. After the next two years went by, Dr. Kieu told me I was finally going to take my braces off again; however, nothing changed about my teeth and it was still not aligned. He then told me there was nothing they could do about it when I took it off. Really? It took you 2 extra years to realize that there was nothing you could do about it? He even told me that it was fixable when the issue was first addressed as well. Clearly ridiculous and a waste of time. Oh and when I got my retainers, the retainers were sitting on top of my gums so it was extremely painful. I told the Dr. Kieu and he tried filing it down to improve the fitment. Still didn't do anything and even after I told him how it was still painful, he just said it seemed fine and sent me on my way like it was no big deal. What? Another side note: the doctor did not use gloves many, many times when working with patients. Orthodontist? No gloves? Do I even have to say more? Wow, I can't believe Dr. Kieu is on Yelp. He was my ortho 15+ years ago when I was a buck-toothed preteen. Back then he was just starting out, had a small practice and had just had his first son. My dad says he's a family friend. He's such a nice guy. He did my brothers' braces too. I was a chicken-sh*t little kid and was scared of all doctors, dentists, etc. Dr. Kieu was so gentle and patient. I never wore my retainer so my teeth aren't perfect anymore. I've been thinking of getting braces again and I wish I could go see Dr. Kieu again but he's so far from me now. read more

Please please read this and the other one star reviews before choosing this place. I went to this guy years ago hoping he could fix my teeth, but I'm now in braces AGAIN because he messed up. When I first met Dr. Kieu I thought he was nice and knowledgeable; I thought I could trust him with my teeth. Boy, was I wrong. The way he treats his patients is rude and very unprofessional. Every single time he checked on my teeth he would carelessly grab my face with his bare hands and just jerk it side to side. He once cut away some gum on by bottom teeth with no anesthetic and WITHOUT asking my permission. His assistant nonchalantly said that I was bleeding heavily and told me to rinse out my mouth in the restroom. When I finally got my braces off, I felt my teeth still weren't straight. By this time, however, I had already been wary of Dr. Kieu so I went to 3 other orthodontists to ask for their input on my teeth. All of them were shocked by the results because I ended up developing an overbite and my teeth were STILL misaligned. When I came back and told him this, I couldn't believe it when said that he would try fixing my teeth again for a reduced price! Not even an apology or an admission that he messed up. 2.5 years and $3.5k down the drain later, I'm now going to a different orthodontist and had to get braces again. The negative reviews are true here. Going thru yelp to look for an orthodontist for my bf and came across this business that I knew sounded familiar. I'm surprised this place is still up and running. I had braces 6-7 years ago and Kevin Kieu scraped the gum of my molar to the point where you can see the roots of the tooth! I remember how the next staff member that had to put the elastic ligature on the brackets was shocked to see my tooth/bloody gums. Less than a year after I got my braces off, that molar had to be extracted and I had to get a tooth implant. Only went here bc I was in college at the time and they offered a payment plan. It ended up costing me more in the long run due to his negligence. Worst orthodontist ever. Definitely not recommending him to anyone! read more

I am a current patient of Dr. Kieu and although I still have another year to go on my projected 2-year treatment, I feel the need to defend these recent negative reviews. This is my second round of braces. The first time around in junior high, my orthodontist failed to recommend teeth extraction. So by the end of years and years of treatment, I never really had perfectly straight teeth. Fast forward 20+ years later. It's been a long time since I've worn retainers and my teeth have shifted a lot but of more concern was development of TMD, basically the locking my jaw joints which resulted in pain so intense, there were weeks where I could barely open my mouth. Upon my dentist's recommendation, I made appointments to see a few orthodontists for their professional opinion. I ended up seeing a total of 6 orthodontists...from Irvine to Fountain Valley and Westminster...all highly educated (Harvard, UCLA, USC, etc). 4 out of the 6 recommended teeth extraction, including Dr. Kieu. It took me about 4 months of asking questions and researching until I decided on Dr. Kieu. Beside the obvious reasons (diagnoses similar to other orthos, proximity, and reasonably priced) Dr. Kieu was by far the warmest and friendliest one out there. My two brothers had their teeth done by him over 15 years ago and he instantly remembered both by name and details about their hobbies. Yes, it takes a sharp mind to remember these things but they also have to care. Some negative reviews on Yelp mentioned him being rough and painful handling. Sorry to break the news to you folks but moving teeth is painful. There's no getting around that. My mouth and teeth have been poked and proded by over 8 dentists/orthodontists in the last 18 months and never have I walked away thinking, "Wow, that was so pleasant...let's do that again." For those complaining that he charges a lot for XRays...his rates are pretty standard...Other Orthodontists hide the cost by adding it to the total cost of your treatment. Some orthodontists don't even do XRays and will send you to a place specializing in XRays where they will charge you about the same. At least Dr. Kieu provides this service. And to those who complained that treatment took way longer than expected, my first round of braces started in junior high and I didn't get them off until I was nearly done with high school. This is because I was really bad about wearing my rubber bands for the required amount of time and I kept missing appointments which further delayed treatment. Now that I'm well into my late 30s, I'm more diligent and responsible with following the doctors orders and I am definitely seeing results. Furthermore, everyone's teeth moves at a different pace, particularly as you get older. Orthodontists will have a general projected length of treatment but in the end, it's still just an estimate. I'll definitely update this review upon completion of treatment but until then, I'm a happy patient of Dr. Kieu and I would highly recommend him. read more

I will admit. i had braces. they didnt work out as well as i expected but yea. it was the part of my life where i was invisible. but at this ortho, i wasn't. they knew my name. ALL of them. i was there every month for two years. fixing the roller coaster that was my mouth. i used to change the colors according to holiday and figured out that this was so not cool. and stuck to black blue and silver. not at the same time of course. he knows all of his patients. they have the business cards with the reminders for appointments and they have the calls that they make so you don't miss your appointment. he gave me a good deal. but my teeth were subject to change anyways. i was warned before i got them. but yea. they do follow ups but then they stopped. and then my retainers broke. so i am SCREWED. bastards. thousands went to some waste. boo. otherwise it would get 5 stars. the wait isn't bad and they always have movies playing! sweet. i give this one Owie. for the lack of follow ups. read more

While roaming around the Yelp website, I came across a business for Kevin Kieu! How awesome! I felt compelled to write a review for him since he was the orthodontist for both my brother and I. My brother had braces for probably around 3 years about 13 years ago. His teeth are still straight, so that goes to show how big of an impact braces make. I had braces from the ages 12-14, and I'm now 21. Although it was an absolute pain having to get them tightened every month along with the agony of not being able to eat anything except soup during those times, it was so worth it. My teeth aren't as straight as they were when I was wearing my retainers (which I've unfortunately lost), but if I hadn't have gotten them done 9 years ago... well I'd still be snaggle-toothed. Doctor Kieu is simply the best in his class. My sister, my brother-in-law, my best friend's son, and I have had braces at his office over 15 years ago. I just brought my two teenaged nieces in for consultation (July 2013). He is that awesome. Besides his personal and professional care to our teeth, he has an incredible uplift spirit and manner. He has a sharp mind. He remembers that my brother-in-law wears glasses. He remembers my sister had a huge over bite, and he remembers I used to date a Persian guy. During my monthly treatment of about 20-22 months, he examined my teeth, did some work, and informed me of the progress before instructing his technicians to finish the work. Every time! In my last treatment when the braces came off, he fine-tuned the gum line to perfect the smile I had always wanted. Like every impatient patient, I wanted my braces off sooner than planned. He said no, because he knew better. That's the doctor you want. His office is squeaky clean and organized. Many of his technicians have been with him for over 10 years. The offices gives out business cards with my next appointment time/date. The also made courtesy calls to remind me of the appointment. The technicians are friendly and professional. The overall environment eases the patients' nerves and anxiety. Yes, he is expensive and not likely to give much discount. However, it is worth every penny. You will love your teeth. Your smile is worth more than the $1,000 or $2,000 discounts at other Orthodontists. It's been 17 years. My teeth are still straight and beautiful. I don't understand how this guy has 5 stars on Yelp. We went to many orthodontists for estimations and my parents settled for him because he was the cheapest (because other orthos were white...obviously he would be the cheapest...). But seriously I'd rather pay extra money to get better work done on my teeth. Not a day goes by where I am not angry about my results. He told my parents and I that I was a minor case (I really was though, not bad teeth at all) and my case would only take 18 months. IT WAS FOUR YEARS. my teeth weren't that bad and he told me to pull out four of my molars (no other ortho said to do that, but his witty little personality was so convincing to my parents). Anyways, there are now huge gaps in my teeth from the four molars that he FAILED to close up. Everything I eat gets stuck in here and I have to carry floss around and constantly pick huge chunks of meat/veggies out of the gaps. Its irritating. This was such a half-assed job. During the last year he realized he needed to get my braces off before the school year because it's been such a lonnngggg time so he started short cutting everything. My bite line didn't match up? Rather than fixing it with his first plan he short cuts and grinds down my teeth EVERY appointment. My teeth were grinded down so much they are short little stubbies now and they are sensitive. Short teeth don't look nice... One last thing I'd like to say about him is that my retainers didn't even fit when he first ordered them. So he went to some little grinding machine in the back to try to save himself money from reordering a new one. After grinding it down so that it'll fit he had to PUSHHH it to snap inside my mouth. Like literally holding my jaw and trying to cram it in there! Thats obviously not how retainers are supposed to be. I'm getting new ones made soon with another company. Plus metal retainers, seriously? Who even uses those anymore. Everyone had the clear kind like the invisiline cases now. Waste. He also doesn't remove your braces so that you can go get it cleaned by your family dentist, like all other orthos do. Save your beautiful teeth and avoid this guy because regardless how bad your teeth is, he will probably fuck it up more. Honestly I would sue him if I had the chance. This guy sucks, all these other reviews were probably his friends or something, I have no idea. There are so many other things I can say about him. I don't give a crap that they remember my name. Honestly, it is expected when you see a patient a 2 or 3 times that you will remember their name. I'm not impressed at all with these reviews saying how hes so great because he remembers your name. DUH, YOU'RE THERE FOR YEARS HOW CAN HE NOT. He has studied his agenda before your visit to act like he remembers your name when you get there. I had good thoughts about him at first too but after noticing so many careless appointments I grew to hate and regret ever coming here. Driving from where I live down to FV just to see this guy for an appointment where he looks at you for 10 seconds and makes you wait for 20 minutes is ridiculous. Do not come here, unless you voluntarily want to be scammed and have your teeth permanently as messed up as possible. I had taken my braces off two years prior to coming to Kevin Kieu's office. They were straight, but not as perfect as I would've liked, which was normal since I had two of my permanent teeth removed for braces. However, Kieu promised that he would fix my teeth and make it look better than before. He took on big talk and confident persona as well has berating my former orthodontist, that I decided to take on the procedure. He put my teeth on braces for four years until the roots of my teeth were impossibly weak. Then when it was finally time to take of my braces, it was EXACTLY the same as before. Nothing had changed from before, except my roots weakening. I, for sure, know that he noticed no change as well. Then he decided to "straighten out" my teeth by filing down them. It damaged my enamel and he over-filed it to the point where my teeth are over sensitive 24/7 even though it has been a good three years after getting my braces off. read more
