Loved loved the service here when I came for a smog check yesterday! I received a notice that I had a smog check due this year and my dad took my car here two years ago and Kevin's Smog Check sent a letter saying they can do it for $40. So I decided why not go here instead of browsing Yelp and reading all the reviews and making a decision. Came here a few weeks back to get a smog check. I have an older 90's Japanese car that requires a dyno, per the CARB dept, which coincidentally also seems to be a dying out technology that many smog check shops have either stopped providing or they can only operate it during a weekday. I'm looking at you, Las Tunas Smog Center, Smog Pros and Super Smog, all within driving distance of each other. All 3 of them were technically open on a Saturday but all 3 said they only service older cars on weekdays or Tues, Wed, and Thurs only. I came here on a Saturday after getting a full tune up literally just an hour before: oil change, fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, cap, rotor, and cleaning out the egr ports and chamber. I figured my car should just barely pass, given how it also just barely passed 2 years back with the same regimen that I put it through just before the smog check. Anyway, this place is cash only and at mid afternoon on a Saturday, the lot was empty. The young Asian guy and older asian guy seemed friendly enough. I think they may be father and son, judging from how they talk to eat other in Vietnamese. As it turns out, my car failed smog due to high nox for the 15 mph run but it passed the 25 mph by 150 points below the max limit. Where as I was off my 300 points for the 15 mph. The older Asian guy said that you get a free re-test within 30 days. So I drove to my mechanic and fixed a bunch of things related to the EGR: replaced the EGR valve, EGR control valve solenoid, cleaned out the EGR ports and chamber again, blew compressed air through the vacuum lines / tubings, checked for vacuum and all lines checked out, then replaced a few non-EGR related components that I've suspected were on their last legs: throttle body gasket, fuel injector o-rings, PCV valve and the grommet, fast idle control valve, and cleaned out the throttle body. I dumped a few bottles of technron fuel system cleaner back to back driving through a few tanks fulls each and drove back to the smog check a week later. The guy said it failed again and I'm like 'no frickin' way!' I asked to see the print out of the new emissions numbers for the re-test and he refused citing that the car basically had the same emissions numbers. I then asked him to show me the numbers on the monitors as he runs the dyno and he told me he already ran the re-test and he's not doing it again--citing it's going to cost me another $60 cash to run the dyno again. The smog guy is supposed to give me a new print out so I know what to look for to fix my car. And he's also refusing to give me guidance on what to fix on top of that. That old Asian guy accused me of fixing my own car using shitty parts and I'm like, 'I took it my regular mechanic'. He was unapologetic. He was like 'oh well then you have a shitty Mechanic'. Instead of helping me out, he gave me the business card of some shady car repair shop, TBT Hiep Thanh Care Car that 'supposedly' does smog check repairs. They're not listed under the CARB dept website as licensed to do that though. And the yelp reviews are too sparse, only 16 reviews to date with an overall rating of 3.5 stars. The Google reviews seem unusually positive and with a slightly higher count of 45 reviews. On Google, they have an overall rating of 4.5 stars, which would suggest that they are good at something or doing something right but it's odd that their Yelp page scored much lower--usually, there's a correlation between each reviews website but what I see is that they are the total opposites, which to me, is fishy as heck. Anyway, long story short, I took it to another smog check shop recommended to me by a friend and they did a pre-test and said the numbers looked good and that it should have passed at that other shop during the re-test. They told me that the other shop probably didn't want to pass you because they needed the business and business was probably slow for them -- better to fail your car and have you re-pay for the actual test again than give away anything free. And I'm like, 'well, I'm not the one that made up that shop policy.' I am of the opinion that if you're the shop owner, then you should price accordingly to what you need to keep the business afloat yet enough to make a bit of profit for what you do. And if business is slow, clearly you're not doing enough or doing something wrong to keep your business afloat. Anyway, I ended up going to Aviles Smog in Hawaiian Garden. It's bit farther than I like to drive and they charge pretty high for older cars, $175--I'm not even joking here--but they did everything by the book and my car passed. All in all, avoid this shop--if you drive an older car that requires the dyno. Maybe for newer cars, this spot might be a quick in and out but I can't recommend this spot for older cars. read more

My second time getting a smog check here! Back in 2020 I had to get my first smog check and I came across this place somehow but I'm happy I did. It seems to be a one man show and he is a courteous older Vietnamese man. In an out in maybe 10-15 mins! I got a letter in the mail recently since I was a previous customer to get a smog check for $40 and he seemed happy I received it. I don't know if this is standard practice for smog check businesses but for a small business like this it adds a special touch. I contacted this place via Yelp and asked for the price and the guy said $50 total for a 1998 Camry. When I got there the guy charged me $60 and also violated the privacy act by requiring my phone number for the credit card transaction. He said that yelp is false and don't believe what price I was told on yelp. I purposely paid with a card instead of cash hoping they would refund the difference and the guy said no.
