Love kewpee!! They have the best burgers and fries in lima.. the frosted malts and frozen yogurts are simply amazing

Disappointed to say the least. "Grandpappy" needs to teach these kids how to deliver good hot food or they will be out of business soon! I thought this would be awesome and I'm sure it is at times. Thursday at 7:40p.m. I got cold fries and cold burger. I can imagine what it's like when they are on their game. Bunch of kids and someone else was complaining while I was there. Generally I would put Kewpee hamburgers above all else, but twice now we have had bad experiences on Sunday nights around 5 -5:30 at the Eastside. The hamburgers were small and hard like they were put back on to stay hot. The fries were cold. The last time my husband ordered his usual double cheeseburger with extra cheese and they had the double burgers on the bun getting ready to wrap when they noticed it had cheese. They reached across to the other counter where they were cutting cheese from a block and slapped two slices on top and wrapped them. For being known for pickle on top-need to retrain because there were three little pickles and hardly any onion. It was like Wendy's. This is nothing like lunchtime during the week. The tables were dirty. The Westside is always clean. My son said that's why they don't eat there on Sundays. I do not find that acceptable. read more

Hey fellow hamburger lovers, here's a little trivia for you. I''m originally from Utica, N.Y. . I believe it's where KewPee's started out. It was like a scene from "Happy Days" back in 1956. They had late night hours and were a welcome site to our 50's rock& roll band after our gig. The hamburgers were huge and the chocolate malts were super. Just thought you'd like to know. FYI - Most of what these other reviewers have written is great information...the history etc of the chain. I love Kewpee, but the one downtown is NOT the best one to go to. When I come to Lima to visit relatives, I had been consistently going to the one downtown for over a year. The quality grew worse with each visit; hamburger tasted spoiled, the fries taste 'burnt' etc. I thought I was going to have to give up which made me sad; then I tried the one on Allentown road - there was the Kewpee I had grown up with! I'm not sure what the difference is - but any other location is better than the one downtown. read more

Oh my gosh...I miss Kewpee! I grew up in Waynesfield Ohio about 15-20 miles outside of Lima Ohio where there are 3 Kewpee locations. Great burgers, shakes, and fresh baked pies at an affordable price. Great memories going to Kewpee with the family when I was a kid and then with friends as a teenager as it was one of the few places we could afford to go! Interiors are basic and remind you of the West Coast In and Out Burger chain, burgers are square, they have chili, and shakes are thick and very similar to Wendy's but sooo much better in my opinion. I live in California now and the nearest Kewpee is 3000 miles away, so sad. read more

I grew up with Kewpee and the local legends of Dave Thomas' dastardly concept theft. Whenever I've taken non-local friends there, they were always a bit creeped out by the giant naked baby dolls that serve as the institution's sole decoration. My norms be shifted as I never noticed. I also mentally refer to the year's second and third months as Februcherry and Marchocolate on account of Kewpee. All in all, I miss their hamburgers daily and it's definitely worth the time to stop in Lima if you're passing through. read more

I love Kewpee Cheeseburger Specials. They are freshly ground and pattied every morning. They also have wonderful pies, malts, frozen yogurt, and hot fries. They are definitely a hometown favorite. read more

This location offers their shakes in footed glasses. Rumor is they taste better that way. It's much smaller than the other Kewpees.

The best place for burgers in town. The burgers are ground fresh daily, the pie's are baked fresh daily and the coffee is great.

The downtown Kewpee Hamburgers is a real classic. Loved the vintage diner architecture and the friendly staff. Someone who knew I was heading down towards Lima told me I *needed* to visit Kewpee for a burger. Now, I believed I never had a Kewpee burger in the past, but the name rang a bell with me. So I began poking around online and...viola! Kewpee burgers and my beloved Halo Burgers in Flint, Michigan are historically one and the same! In fact, I'd reviewed Halo here on Yelp and blogged about it in the past as well at http://www.midwestguest.com/2010/05/history-and-olives-on-the-menu-at-michigans-halo-burger.html So, how did the Lima version stack up? Same great taste...and the same ability to add sliced olives to my burger. And I do loves me my olive burgers! Fries and frozen lemonade were the perfect accompaniments to my lunch. We managed to hit this place about mid-afternoon, so we were able to park quite close by. I was in town for work and everyone said I needed to eat here. I ordered and bacon cheese burger, fries and a chocolate malt. The burger was moist and tasty. It was a little bland but was much better with salt and pepper. Its strange they charge 10 cents for mayo. The french fries were good. The malt was weird. I think they sprinkled malt powered on a cup of chocolate soft serve. It was not very chocolatey or malty. I wouldn't order one again. The whole meal cost $9.10. Its better than fast food but I was not impressed. read more

I have been going here since I was little and I still have a taste for it now and then. I don't have one near me but sometimes when I am down that way I HAVE to stop and get a burger and fries. They are always perfect and it is one of the best burgers I have ever tasted. read more

I do not understand Lima's love for this place. To begin, the naked doll on the wall is strange and off-putting. The service was fine - it's just a fast food joint, so I didn't have high expectations. More importantly, the food. The meat wasn't very good - comparable to McDonalds. The bun was nothing special. It wasn't terrible, but it's very disappointing to have after hearing everyone in Lima rave about it. A couple of reviews tried to compare this burger to In N Out or Five Guys. Both of those burgers are miles ahead of the Kewpee burger. read more

Overrated. Not very good. I expected more but the people of Lima love this place.

If there was only one thing that pretty much anyone from Lima can agree upon, it is how proud we are of Kewpee. TO anybody who comes from out of town, they may think the place looks like a dump. And quite frankly, it does in fact look that way, but once you bite into that burger for the first time, you forget all about the decor. I don't need a fancy setting to enjoy a good burger. The meat is fresh,never frozen and comes from a local producer. If there was one complaint I had, they fixed it, the drinks. You always got ripped off by the glass filled to the brim with ice. But no more. You can get a large drink for only a dollar!! A true gem to our town! read more

I grew up in Utica NY, and worked at Kewpees in the mid-50's. Will always remember the advertising slogan " Kewpee Hamburger, pickle on top, makes your heart go flippity flop". My job was working in the basement, scooping raw meat from a large container, with an ice-cream scoop, and stacking the balls into a pyramid on a large flat tray. This place is awesome, i was working in the area and it was within walking distance so i thought i would give it a try, never heard of it before so i really had no expectations. I loved the food, the decor and the prices so much i went back for two more meals during the same business trip to Lima. If you have not tried it this place is a must, if you have tried it you already know what i mean. FUN FOOD. Went here last summer when I came to visit a friend in nearby Algier. Absolutely loved it. Greasy burger, frozen lemonade were excellent. Had the strawberry-rhubarb pie and have dreamt about it since. Only thing I could find wrong was the cleanliness of the joint. But that didn't mean much to me anyway. And I'm very particular about my burgers. We lived in Lima for 38 years and moved to Columbus in 2002. Since then I've been on a quest to find a burger as good as the Kewpee. No, this isn't one of those, Oh I love Lima so I have to love Kewpee things, I can tell you without reservation, there is nothing in this city or surrounding area that can compete with a Kewpee. I'm going to Lima next week and I'm definitly getting a Kewpee for dinner. As I said, my love for Kewpee isnt' from some naustalgic feeling, the burgers taste like burgers and you don't have to pay $9.99 for one. Best advice to Kewpee, open a chain in Columbus and let me buy stock....we'll both make a lot of money. read more

Awesome burger. Parking and getting access to the shop is a trick thanks to the crazy street system in Lima, but it was worth the hassle. Be sure to get green olives on your burger. read more

We had heard and read good things about the Kewpee downtown Lima restaurant so we considered it an "adventure" when on our trip home from Toledo, we made a detour to the restaurant. We got lost as apparently there is more that one "N. Elizabeth" street, but eventually found our way there. On a quiet Sunday afternoon you think they would have been happy to see 6 adults and a child walk in to an empty restaurant. Although the lady in the back smiled at us, the man who took the order was downright snooty. He spoke to us like a drill sergeant rather than an employee. He ended everything with "Ma'am" or "Sir" which I guess somehow made it okay with him. It was name, rank, and serial number and he certainly didn't make us feel welcome, let alone offer any hospitality. When I asked about refills, I got a curt "No refills." I thought this unusual in this day and age, but it was more so the way I got the response that offended me. We ate our food, some of us a lot, and were on our way. Drove through this place while taking a tour of the Midwest. Walking into this place was a step back in the past. The staff was super friendly and courteous. The food was delicious! One of the best hamburgers you will ever have. They have been around for ever. Having a malt finishes off the meal. Only downside is that they have a limited menu. No salads or other fresh items. Still the best place for burgers. Very affordable read more

Let's be real here. In my entire life, I have not once had cold fries, or a wrong order. Ok, once they gave me a pepsi instead of dr pepper, but that's it. Fast, fresh, and perfect every single time. Can't say that about many other places in Lima. And for those of you who think Kewpee is only a Lima thing, please expand your Kewpee love to Racine, WI, and Lansing, MI. Both are unique and excellent as well, Racine probably tops all of the Kewpees in my book. read more

I love this place so much. I've been going to Keepee since I was little and I've always loved it. Keepee is the best place to go for the best hamburgers in town unless you have an amazing cook at home but even then Keepee will still beat them. Everything is so good. It might be a bit expensive but oh boy is it worth it. read more

I was born and raised in Lima and grew up eating Kewpees. As I aged perhaps my tastes have changed but 5 Guys and Wendy burgers are a cut above Kewpee. Kewpees are too greasy. They'll degrease it for you however it doesn't alleviate the lump it leaves in your gut. I'll eat Kewpee in a pinch, but plain. read more

Quite possibly the quintessential Hamburger restaurant! Of course, I grew up in Lima and visited all three of the Kewpee locations more times than I could count. Not many things have changed about the Kewpee - especially the Elizabeth Street location; same tiny building, same decor, same friendly staff (literally, I think a couple of the current employees were there when I was a child). And the food! - no other place will ever come close to the perfection of a freshly-pattied hamburger (or two) fried, placed on a soft, locally baked hamburger bun, and served with your choice of equally fresh toppings...MMM MMM MMM!!! Anyone who is a fan of hamburgers owes it to themselves to make the trip to Lima, Ohio and stop in to the downtown Kewpee location for breakfast (they are open very early and serve burgers all day - awsome!), lunch, or dinner. You will not be disappointed. I can't wait to visit my family (including my in-laws) just so I have an excuse to drive to the Kewpee for another taste of heaven! read more

I ate at Kewpee's at the request of a friend who said they have great burgers there. When I got there, I had to wait in line to put an order in. The menu is very limited so I got a double cheeseburger, fries and a chocolate malt/shake. The burger was okay, it was better than fast food like Mcdonalds or Burger King, but was closer to a better version of a Steak N' Shake burger. It was not better than five guys or other burger places that are a little more expensive for a hamburger. The fries were okay but not great. The malt/shake was a little different though. It was not a shake or malt as I expected but merely a soft serve ice cream in a cup.Not bad overall for under $8 though. read more
