Bartender Joel (shift manager, Asian dude) asked me to post a review, so I guess I'll oblige. Despite having visited Keys Lounge every few weeks with a friend over the past year and a half, Joel has never remembered my face, my name, or my drink (beer). No big deal - except for last night. We were there for a couple of hours. I ordered 3 drinks in all. He asked me what I was having and what my name was every single time, as if I had just walked up to the bar for the first time. Again - no big deal, right? Except, the last time I ordered, I knew that my friend had been waiting on a drink for 5 minutes. When Joel asked for my order, I pointed across the room and said, "I believe that gentlemen has been waiting for his for a while. I'll have the same thing, but don't mind waiting on his." Apparently, this set Joel off. He did bring both drinks to us at the same time, but then puffed up his feathers with a "bro - I don't want an arguent so maybe we can just chill out." I was honestly shocked. For one thing, I was just trying to be polite in the first place, but in response to this attitude, I said, "man, I've ordered three of the same thing tonight, yet you've asked me for my name every time. I kinda just don't get it." And that's when he snapped. He literally grabbed my beer from in front of me, spilling some of it onto my laptop, which fortunately was closed. I've never quite seen anything like it. I asked him if his parents owned the bar, as his behavior was a pure indication that he had no fear of being reprimanded or punished for abusive behavior to customers. In response, he said, "if you don't like the service, you're welcome to leave. I asked, "do you really want to risk a negative Yelp review?" To which he responded, Go for it. My name is Joel." Well, my friend had just been given his beer, and we were in the midst of a nice conversation, so I had no interest in leaving, with or without the beer Joel had just spilled on my laptop. We stayed for another 45 minutes or so. (Notably, I wasn't kicked out, as you'd imagine a belligerent patron might be), and I never received a check, though apparently I was charged and will be disputing, costing them more than the value of my tab in banking fees alone. Suffice it to say, I won't be back. They have a few friendly bartenders there, and it's otherwise a good vibe or we wouldn't have been there in the first place, but with toxic management like that, I'll be more than happy to take my business elsewhere. Outside on a winter's night under the glow of the heatlamp, I could have sworn that the music playlist had been originated for me personally! Jamaican jazz, War and some funky Motown with the bass dialed all the way up provided the perfect soundscape for my impossible burger and new favorite new designer drink "Village Green." Rarely do I have enough will power to sip on a mixed drink; the wasabi allowed me to sip and savor and fully appreciate the flavor tones. Staff members were positive and fun to interact with, and this was the perfect place to catch up with an out of town friend where Covid protocol was observed. I'm glad we got here before the rush set in. We were looking for a brewery to hang out and have dinner but couldn't find parking. When I passed Keys Lounge I was intrigued and decided to check them out on Yelp. Exceeded my expectations! We stepped into the spacious room with plenty of tables and cozy spaces by the fireplace. The bar is straight ahead and they take food orders also. I looked the menu over to find some vegan options. Then, I saw the Impossible Burger on the menu and knew right away we had to try it. Here are the details of this fabulous find. The bun was toasted so perfectly around all the edges but not burnt. The vegan burger had the most amazing texture just like a nice grilled burger. It had lettuce, tomato, onions and pickles. Then, they were so smart; they wrapped it in paper, so it didn't fall apart. With the 1st bite, I knew there was magic going on in the kitchen because of the way it was seasoned... throughout every bite until the very last smakaroo numiness bite. And $10, wow!! The bartenders and servers were friendly, and I mean every one of them. The service for our dinner was pretty quick, about 15 mins. read more

This is one of the coolest bars in Portland. The interior is old lounge style with new flare. The atmosphere is relaxed and homey ( in a good way). They have multiple vegan options including the Impossible Burger for ten dollars which is the cheapest price that I have found anywhere. They also have full bar and few beer selection. The customer service is great. They make you feel like you are a friend... This place is new. I am sure they will be very busy when the word gets out, so please don't tell anyone! read more

Since we don't have the option to choose half stars, I went with the better score because Keys Lounge is relatively new and still learning. I'm not entirely sure why Joe felt he should stop in, but I'm glad he did. Here's what we like: First, the ambience and atmosphere are great. The music (played on records) and the old DJ are on-point. Second, there's 1/2 priced bottles of wine during happy hour. Third, happy hour is from 3pm to 7pm. Repeat, happy hour is from 3pm to 7pm DAILY. Fourth, the pate is delicious. Almost as good as the spicy pickled asparagus. Fifth, the cheat-charones are very good. Melt in your mouth good and tastes just like they're made of meat, but they're not. Sixth, the drinks are cold because they have the best ice on the planet--the little sphere ice that looks like hail. Last, the patio is dog friendly. There was a funky looking poodle there--that's how I know. Here's what we didn't like: First, I don't like standing in line for my drinks. Servers might be unoriginal and costly, but they're still needed--especially in a restaurant. The chicken katsu was over cooked and under-seasoned. Salt and pepper--still a good idea. They could probably use more sauces with it, too. It needs something to mask the lack of flavor and the cultural appropriation. Overall, I'm going back. I like a happy hour that lasts forever and and I like watching freaky poodles with their scary owners. read more

Hubby had the fried chicken burger which he liked, I had the burger with avocado and cheese. Burger was heavily salted, buns fell apart, minuscule amount of avocado. Wouldn't order this again. Neat bar with a retro vibe and a dog-friendly patio. They open up the bar to the outdoor patio when it's warm out that makes the bar a more 'airy' and spacious. It was pretty empty here around 4:30 pm on a Tuesday evening but it was starting to get crowded by 6pm. I had wine and the grilled cheese sandwich from their happy hour menu. Bartenders were friendly. I was excited for the grilled cheese with a blend of cheeses but was let down with the chunks of apples (surprise!) in it. I was not expecting it and when I ate it, I first thought it was an onion or raw-ish potato; but no, it was an apple. It wasn't sweet either. I'm a fan of sweet and salty and different textures but when wasn't a fan of this. Fries were delicious though. There's not a lot I can say that hasn't already been said in the other five star reviews here. This place is a great neighborhood bar with a classy retro atmosphere and good food. In our four and a half days in Portland, we went to Keys Lounge three times. We always managed to find a table to sit four of us, even during busy times. As vegans we had lot's of food options, and they were delicious, and our non-vegan friends had plenty of good choices too. The chicken fried steak on the brunch menu is amazing. Some people don't like crushed ice in their cocktails, but I am OK with that. It's unique, but it's nice to have big chunky ice cubes in a whiskey drink. Good selection of local and well known beers. You order food and drInks at the bar, like many places in Portland. It takes a little getting used to, but it works. My group of friends likes to play "name the band" when music is playing. The DJ was playing so really deep cuts that had us stumped a few times. Good tunes! It was cold and rainy when we were there, but the patio would be a great spot to hang out by an outdoor fire in better weather. Will definitely come back next time we're in Portland. read more

This place is great! It actually looks, feels, and sounds like a lounge. I feel that they are accurately using the word "lounge" in their title. So many "bars" really miss the mark when calling themselves a "lounge". It's usually quite apparent and it doesn't just stop at misappropriation of a title they also have budget food drink and service at high end prices, but not here at Keys. I did have some inconsistencies with service here and that's why the ding of a star. Same "menu" cocktail prepared by differing bartenders with drastically different results. Also that thing happened where ordering line anarchy occurred and I had to wait 15 minutes for a drink whilst other peeps at my table had zero time wait. This is the usually the problem with "order at the bar" establishments and also another reason for a star ding. A true lounge would have table service. Food - good. Drink - mixed results. Service - well, that's me and the bartender or you and the bartender when you go here. So it depends are you any good at reading a menu and walking up to the bar to place an order? Thought so... you suck at bar services don't ya. Environmentally this place is 5 stars. Atmosphere with decor, design and lighting, etcetera is great - five stars. Price is pretty good for what they serve up on the menu. Although I did watch one menu drink getting made that had bourbon in it and they made it with old crow... smh. This would be a solid bar anywhere. In this overheated, overrated neighborhood it's a standout performer and in this otherwise near-derelict strip of K-worh it's a freaking miracle. The staff is one and all great. They're friendly without being gushy (can you all teach New Seasons how that works?) and they're serious about service without being stuffy. The space is great, the front room/bar is a perfect happy medium. It's JUST small enough to make the lack of table service acceptable but big enough that it's not crowded with tables and stuff, there's even a little corner bench for a semblance of privacy. There's a back room/lounge I really haven't explored much. It has a service window connecting it to the bar. Great idea, Keys. The decor is a little precious but it's ignorable which is all I really ask of, y'know, the walls. There's a patio if you have less sense than our caveman ancestors and enjoy eating outside. If you do, seek help. Still, it looks nice and the seats on the outdoor counter under the garage door are a nice touch. The menu is what keeps it from being five stars. It's not a large menu and an attempt has been made for breadth at the expense of, reliability I guess. I just get the burger every time I eat here. Yep, this place is rad. I'm always a sucker for a vintage vibe, and Keys Lounge has that for days. The interior feels inspired by an early 70s rec room, and whether they're playing retro or contemporary, the music is always on point. The bar staff is crazy friendly, and I love the indoor/outdoor setup of the actual bar itself. I can't really think of another place in town like it. I will say that I don't particularly care for their specialty cocktails. i've tried a few now and never been all that impressed. I think from now on I'll stick to either beer or very classic cocktails and be happy. Everything else about this spot is so on point that it doesn't really matter to me that I can't get some super-special drink that'll blow my mind. Drinking a negroni or an old fashioned at Keys Lounge is still definitely better than drinking the most creative of cocktails at many other PDX bars. read more

What a cool lil neighborhood place. I met friends for happy hour. I have to let you know that when doing a search, I put in the name of the place (Keys) but the only things that showed up were locksmiths (go figure) I had to put in "Keys bar" for my search and that did it. I wish I would have taken a picture of the menu for you so you could get an idea of what was on the menu but I'll just tell you that I had the Steaktips with sautéed mushrooms and onions and served with a blue cheese/horseradish dipping sauce, yummers! Some of my favorite flavors all on one plate. My house dirty vodka martini paired well and had just the right amount of dirty (kudos to the bar and kitchen staff!) Weirdest cocktail ever- the bartender distractedly mixed the drink in a shaker with no ice, pulled out a TALL glass, pours it in. The glass was about 1/4 full, she then poured the drink back into the shaker, adds some Campari, pours back into the glass, and fills the glass with crushed ice, with the beverage at the bottom and hands it to me. As expected it was watery snd nearly tasteless and difficult to drink through 3/4 glass of packed ice. No what I expect from a $12 drink. read more

We ended up here since Knockout Taco was closed. I love the vibe of this place--it's hip, there are lots of fireplaces/outdoor seating options, and the retro feel is pretty awesome. However, the mezcal old fashioned we got tasted cheap. It was not worth the $10, and this was the first terrible cocktail I've had in a long time. The food options are limited, and they're expensive for what you get. You can get a Caesar salad for $11 with shrimp (not a lot of shrimp for $3), a chicken sandwich for $9 (JUST a sandwich), and 6-7 pork belly bites for $9. The food was average at best. I was disappointed that the food AND drink were so terrible for such a great location and ambiance. Been coming here for a couple weeks now, and I can report that this is a hidden gem on Killingsworth. In what used to actually be a key store, they've kept it true to the original building (on the outside) at least. Small nuances have been kept from the original store, like having old keys left up at the bar for aesthetic. But that's not all. Inside, is a dimly lit but very cozy bar. A fire is always lit, rugs cover the floors, and super cushiony red diner style bar seats are on the far walls. But don't let the interior fool you... this place can get down. On the weekends, they have a live DJ that plays the many records that sit on shelves throughout the bar. Requests? They can do that too. Best of all is that now that it's officially warmer outside, they have ample outdoor seating on their extensive patio as well. You can either order food and drinks inside at the bar, or order at the outdoor bar counter. It's a win win. Food? Awesome and cheap. Definitely go for happy hour as you can get full and buzzed while still balling on budget. Best bet - the $5 happy hour burger. Lots of flavor here that you don't want to miss out on. And if you want to drink? Easy. Their happy hour menu is extensive and reasonably priced, and the bartenders are very nice and knowledgeable if you're not sure what to get.
