This is some really good fried chicken. Great skin, super fresh, moist, all the things. We split…read morethe 3 piece dark meal with fries, and it hit the spot. I had a nice, crispy diet coke. We had the hot tamales to start, which were pretty good as well. The atmosphere is very kid friendly, and service was good. They've got a full bar. I'm not normally all the way out in Alabaster like this, but would definitely come here again.

We stopped by Champy's for Saturday lunch and were seated immediately by a friendly hostess. The…read morerestaurant has a rustic, down-home atmosphere that fits the Southern comfort food menu perfectly. Our waiter, Hudson, was friendly throughout the meal and did a good job providing recommendations and suggestions. I ordered the 3-Piece White Meat Plate with two breasts and a wing, along with baked beans and coleslaw. I also ordered a side of the Sweet Heat sauce for dipping. My wife ordered the Fried Mississippi Catfish with fries and coleslaw, along with jalapeño hush puppies. The fried chicken and catfish were the stars of the meal. Both came out piping hot, crispy, and well seasoned. My chicken had plenty of flavor to stand on its own, but the Sweet Heat sauce complemented it nicely and added another layer of flavor without overpowering the chicken. The French fries were excellent and easily the best side. Crispy, hot, and exactly how fries should arrive. The remaining sides didn't reach the same level. We both found the vinegar-and-mayo coleslaw somewhere between average and below average. I felt about the same about my baked beans. My wife thought the jalapeño hush puppies were average. If you want excellent hush puppies, Shrimp & Co. in Hueytown remains our standard. Both of our meals were also served with a thick slice of white bread, which fit the simple, down-home presentation. This was our second or third visit to Champy's, and the food that matters most has been excellent each time. The sides may be hit or miss, but they know how to fry some chicken and catfish. Come for the chicken and catfish, definitely get the fries, and consider the other sides supporting players.

Let me preface this by saying, when you can cook this kind of stuff at home paying for it at a…read morerestaurant better mean the payed version tastes better. However, it does taste just like that of a quick dinner where I can open up a few bags of frozen veggies and serve them at my own dinner table for less money. I'm not saying that any of it tastes BAD, just that it isn't impressive. I've come here twice with a large group of men. They have a few lunch specials to choose from. Mostly a meat with choice of sides. The first time I selected one of those specials and the second time I got soup. Sure, it tasted fine but again I stress...not impressive. I will note that all of the men scarfed down their food happily. I'm not trying to be mean or snobby. Please do go here if you aren't used to this style of cooking from home. It's perfectly fine if you're craving meat and veggies. I just love finding restaurants that offer me something different than what I can have at home. And if you too are looking for something to knock you out of your socks, try scouting out other places and good luck! (Side note: Pay at front after meal)

The fried catfish and grilled shrimp had outstanding flavor. Their philly steak sandwich was served on grilled Texas toast and was also wonderful. The mixed drinks are robust.
