The original Smithfield's was opened in Smithfield in 1977, with the Clayton operation beginning in 1979. Since then the restaurant has greatly expanded across the state, now totaling 41, with the 2 furtherest west being in Greensboro and Charlotte. Over the years, I've eaten at perhaps half of the Smithfield locations, and have rarely been disappointed, and in the few where I was, it centered on the service, not the food. As with so much in the restaurant area, things have changed and will surely continue to change with pork barbecue in North Carolina, reflecting changing tastes and changing processes. For example, fewer and fewer cooked over hardwood coals, and very few cook the whole hog - in fact, I think there are only 4 (all in the east) that still do - Skylight Inn, B's, Grady's, and The Pit. Smithfield very much mirrors the changing nature of NC BBQ over the last 30 years or so. The pork bbq for ALL locations is cooked in Smithfield and then shipped to the various locations. Obviously, what you get is less than just off the rack fresh. Still, if I'm close, then a pop in for a combo of bbq and chicken works. I like their slaw. the hush puppies are fair at best, the hot dog totally sucks, and the Chicken Tender Sandwich is really, really good! Don't consider this a destination bbq spot, but I will still go from time to time if driving by. There is some bad bbq sold in NC, but it is most often found at a grocery store or a convenience store - if it has gas pumps keep moving!

Typical Lexington BBQ, which is fine, I guess, if you're into that. I do not like it at all. The bun was soggy. The fries were undercooked. They do have the nice crunchy ice, though.

The chicken itself was excellent. It was incredibly juicy, perfectly fried, and had a great crispy coating. My only issue was that the breading felt like it was missing a little something, maybe more seasoning, pepper, or some extra flavor. Growing up with places like Gus's Fried Chicken in Memphis and Nashville hot chicken, I think I naturally expect a little more punch from the chicken itself. The sauce they serve is more of a barbecue style sauce, and while it worked, I personally didn't love it enough for it to carry all the flavor. The sides were a mixed bag. The collard greens were really good and definitely one of the highlights. The coleslaw, though, was way too pepper heavy for my taste. Also, the piece of bread that comes with the meal was honestly not worth the calories. I'd rather see them either upgrade the bread or skip it altogether. One unexpected highlight was the pebble ice from the drink machine. Small detail, but it was awesome and definitely appreciated. Overall, I'd come back and try some different sides because the chicken itself is worth returning for. With a little more seasoning or some different sauce options, I could see this being a 5 star spot.

Estimated time was 15 min for everything. They accept cards, but prefer cash. For a double cheeseburger, 2 normal cheeseburgers, bbq special plate and 3 fries with an added side of creamed potatoes it was around $60? With tip. Whoever is back there cooking, I applaud them. This is some good food. It was seasoned perfectly. Burgers were thick and tasty. The BBQ chicken was moist and flavorful. Creamed potatoes were chunky and absolutely perfect. Mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy. Baked beans were sweet although I was not expecting onions in them but still very good. Fries were normal fries, did lack salt but I mean you're probably not here for the fries honestly. If you've never been here like me, please visit. This place is good. I highly recommend to anyone!

I got the double bacon cheeseburger and it was one of the best tasting burgers I've had in years. The French fries and burger were hot up until it was consumed. I thought it was a little pricey compared to some of the other restaurants in the area but, the taste was worth it. It was my first visit but, definitely not my last. Can't wait to go back and bring my family.

From the moment we walked through the door, the owners, Slim and his wife, Lynn, made us feel like family. Neither me, my family nor Slim are originally from Siler City, but you'd have thought we'd all known each other for 30 years. They were professional, genuinely welcoming, and went the extra mile to make sure everything was perfect. They brought our food out promptly and Lynn spent time working the room (lol) with her mix of warm, welcoming personality and a sense of humor that had customers smiling and laughing everywhere she went. Slim and I had a chance to chat a bit about his story, and at the same time he made sure everything was exactly the way it should be. Getting to know both of them and hearing about the journey they've been on over the last few years was honestly one of the highlights of our visit. Now let's talk about the food... absolutely phenomenal. The mild chicken wings were exactly what my family has been searching for ever since leaving the Southwest, where bold flavor and great food are simply the expectation. Today, I'm happy to report that The Bone Yard has officially become our East Coast BBQ spot! We sampled a little bit of everything, including the mild wings, a full rack of ribs, and a half pound of pulled pork topped with Slim's own Carolina mustard sauce. Every single item brought something unique to the table. Nothing tasted ordinary or mass produced. The ribs were tender, juicy, and practically fell off the bone. The pulled pork was packed with flavor, and that mustard sauce put it over the top. Every bite showed the care, passion, and pride that goes into the food. You can genuinely taste the difference. As I looked around the restaurant, all I saw were smiling faces enjoying incredible food, and I knew we weren't the only ones who felt this way. In our opinion, this is hands down the best BBQ we've had anywhere in North Carolina. Would we drive 40 minutes just to eat here again? Without hesitation... hell, we might do it again tomorrow. Five stars all day long. Incredible food. Incredible people. An unforgettable experience. Slim and Lynn have built something truly special, and we can't wait to come back. If you're anywhere near Siler City, do yourself a favor and make the trip. You'll leave full, happy, and already planning your next visit.
