I first tried Smithfield's Chicken N' BBQ in the early 80's at their second location just off of Highway 70 in Clayton. The original Smithfield's was opened in Smithfield in 1977, with the Clayton operation beginning in 1979. Since then the restaurant has greatly expanded across the state, now totaling 41, with the 2 furtherest west being in Greensboro and Charlotte. Over the years, I've eaten at perhaps half of the Smithfield locations, and have rarely been disappointed, and in the few where I was, it centered on the service, not the food. As with so much in the restaurant area, things have changed and will surely continue to change with pork barbecue in North Carolina, reflecting changing tastes and changing processes. For example, fewer and fewer cooked over hardwood coals, and very few cook the whole hog - in fact, I think there are only 4 (all in the east) that still do - Skylight Inn, B's, Grady's, and The Pit. Smithfield very much mirrors the changing nature of NC BBQ over the last 30 years or so. The pork bbq for ALL locations is cooked in Smithfield and then shipped to the various locations. Obviously, what you get is less than just off the rack fresh. Still, if I'm close, then a pop in for a combo of bbq and chicken works. I like their slaw. the hush puppies are fair at best, the hot dog totally sucks, and the Chicken Tender Sandwich is really, really good! Don't consider this a destination bbq spot, but I will still go from time to time if driving by. There is some bad bbq sold in NC, but it is most often found at a grocery store or a convenience store - if it has gas pumps keep moving! read more

Stopped in for my first Smithfield's experience. We passed by and my husband asked if I'd ever been and when I said no, he whipped a Uturn and pulled in. My first thought was "this is a local small town bojangles". First and foremost these may be the best fries I've ever had. They were cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. I went with the dark meat platter and my husband got the chicken tender snack tray. You can go through the drive through or go in and order. You order at the counter for take out or sit down. Stopped on the way home as we passed through Siler City. We hadn't been to a Smithfield's in a while since there aren't a lot close by. I got the pulled pork sandwich, with slaw. The meat was packed high on the sandwich! It was well seasoned and cooked. I struggled to finish it. My husband got the chicken tender snack, which came with three tenders and fries. The tenders were probably the best I have ever tasted! The seasoning was spot on, and they were very well cooked--sometimes tenders can dry out and these did not. The kids meal was a great value. The chicken tender was huge and the fries were piled high. (My daughter originally ordered a chicken leg but it would be a wait--so we switched gears). We ordered a side of hush puppies too! My husband won't eat any other barbecue, but loves Smithfield's. He is from eastern NC and we currently live in TN. I recently took a trip to NC and he requested that I bring home a pound of barbecue and some Brunswick Stew. I drove through at this location and they went out of their way to make sure my food was packed nicely on my cooler for the trip home. Shana was so kind, and not only packed it carefully in a bag of ice inside of my cooler, but also told me about the BOGO on Brunswick Stew. It was perfectly chilled (with no leaking) when I arrived home, even with a long delay due to an accident on the Interstate. My husband loved the barbecue...excellent, moist, flavorful and perfectly seasoned, and it was nice chunks of pork as opposed to shreds and it had no gristle. Always great food and always great service. Drive thru is always quick. When dining inside their employees always come by very often to check on you and provide you with drink refills. Smithfield's also offers complimentary coffee. Their bbq, fried chicken and fried shrimp are some of my favorites. Their beef stew is also a big hit to many. They have banana pudding and pecan pie for a sweet treat. They sale shirts and hats as well. They also sale used fryer oil containers as well. read more

I know everyone rants and raves about Smithfield's but I didn't have the best experience here. I went to the Siler City location since I was in town visiting my sister. It is like many fast food restaurants; standard drive thru windows and seating areas inside. When you come in you order your food at the counter and a number is given to you. Once the food is ready someone behind the counter brings it to you. Our experience today was not very good. The girl at the counter got our order wrong twice and forgot to give us the sauces we asked for. I got a chicken tender platter and my boyfriend got 4 piece dark meat platter. My fries were soggy but my chicken was tasty. I also got honey mustard as my dipping sauce since they do not carry ranch here. There's workers that come around refilling your sweet tea here which is pretty nice. I heard the banana pudding here is good and saw that they sell pecan pie as well. If I come back again I'll probably just come back for their desserts. read more

Finding an open spot for lunch near Bear Creek that's open on Sunday has been nearly impossible this afternoon; until we found Smithfield's! Small menu with nothing health conscious so just go nuts and enjoy the fried chicken, fries, slaw, potato salad, hush puppies and banana pudding! 3 of us ate like kings for $22 and the service was friendly and hospitable. The fried chicken was crispy and moist and well seasoned; I really liked it. I didn't care for the potato salad but that's just my personal taste. The hush puppies were crispy and thick and the banana pudding was just ok. I'm not from the south but my neighbor is and hers has real banana slices in it and actually tastes like banana; this tasted kinda like banana but more like vanilla pudding. Not a bad experience at all but the food was just ok. Fried chicken and fries were the stars. If we come back to this area again, we'll be sure to do it on a Saturday to try another spot for lunch. read more

Smithfield is a local NC chain w/ about 30 locations. Basically, they only serve three entrees: Barbecue, Shrimp, and Chicken. It is pretty fast--you place your order at the counter and they call your number. If you are eating in, a staff member might bring it to you. Today's choice was the Chicken Snack (white meat). A HUGE breast, wing (whole), and a side. Side choices are pups, fries, cole slaw, baked beans, or brunswick stew. I elected the slaw and was very pleased. Definitely not "food service" slaw. Appeared to be homemade w/ bits of carrots. Not very mayonaisy, which is a good thing. $4.99 for the meal. Can't beat that! Their que is marketed as "eastern NC style", but it really isn't, as they do shoulders, not whole hog. Their dip is really good and you can buy a pint for $3.49 or go nuts w/ a gallon for $9.49. It's not Stameys or Wilbers, but it is pretty good. I think the most expensive meal is the Large Shrimp Platter--$9. They have a special going now--add a chicken thigh to any meal--99 cents. read more

Temporarily situated in Asheboro, NC and I travel 20 miles to Siler City NC to get the best Brunswick Stew this side of heaven. The " buy 1 and get the 2nd for $1 " deal is just fine for this ole hillbilly bargain hunter. I downed 1 in the restaurant and came out with 3 extras for later in the week. Top notch service! Everyone here was just genuinely friendly. They chatted a bit without being all in your space while you're trying to eat. The combo plate...so delicious!
