Good food but breakdown in communication with newly hired waitress created dissatisfaction. New waitress several times sat down to text, apparently oblivious of the demands of front-of-house work. There is NO TIME EVER to check in with a friend or relative while on the job. Period. This issue created more work for the others on the team and definitely affected our experience because she was our waitress. Kudos to the chick training, but I would say its hopeless. You either get it or you don't. She don't. Meanwhile other customers were getting the exact orders they placed and they didn't experience the levels of frustration we encountered. Of course when you're new to a job there are always angles to learn, but at least be attentive to what those angles might be and watch and listen and anticipate. To best serve as a waitress imagine that that customer is your brother or your boyfriend or your child or your mother and you are taking care of them while they sit at the table. That means bringing silverware, asking how they want their food prepared, and then bringing it with a smile and ask if there's anything further they need. It's simple. Otherwise, we won't be back.

I am at the wafflehouse. It has really great service and food . I am a server and cook

This place is a hole in the wall burger joint that focuses on three things. Burgers, hotdogs and…read morefries. Good luck finding a seat if you don't get there at opening or at closing because it is PACKED with a line out the door otherwise. It's got a counter with seats and a handful of booths giving it that "get in and get out" vibe. I saw their name listed on a Top 10 BEST Cheeseburgers of North Carolina list and was told by a native in Siler City to go here for the best cheeseburgers so I decided to give them a try. My go to cheeseburger order is always cheese, pickles onions and mustard but they don't have pickles so I got a cheeseburger with Ket, Mus, Mayo, lettuce, tomato and onion. It was DELICIOUS! So juicy and flavorful. They roll and pat out each burger to order, steam the buns, and the fries come out hot and crispy. Their tea is really good too. Service was friendly and knowledgeable about their product and origin of beef. But be prepared to wait. It's a BUSY little place, but well worth the wait. I highly recommend for the best cheeseburger around.

Slinging burgers in a tiny place like Siler City since the 1940s?! Well you gotta be doing…read moresomething right to achieve community institution status like that, and I finally had the good fortune to be in the area of this spot during their limited hours... so I had to stop in. Johnson's doesn't look like it has changed much since it first came to be. Fairly tiny on the inside, and showing a lot of wear on the outside, it's got the look and charm of a place that has spanned over 75 years of service. That said even though it is dated, the inside looked nice and clean to me. There is lunch counter seating, that if you are a tall individual, might be a tight fit for you, but the booths aren't going to be any better. So after jamming my knee into the wall under the counter, I achieved a fine degree of man-spread, and was reasonably OK after that. From my seat at the counter, I had a perfect view of their process and burgers sizzling on the flat-top grill. Each burger hits the hot top with a sizzle, is smashed down (but not quite to smashburger thin-ness), gets flipped, is adorned with a thick chunk of Velveeta cheese, and gets half a bun on top to let it steam up real good. The other half the bun is to the left, where a dedicated person is assembling all the toppings. When ready, they put the halves together, wrap it up, and send it your way. Fast and efficient, but all patties are 100% cooked to order. I also got a hot dog all the way, order of fries, and a fully sweet tea as they were out of unsweet. They were also out of pickles, and don't do grilled onions, negatives for me because I like my first try to be simple. grilled onions, pickles, burger sauce if available. They also charge extra for lettuce and tomato. I just went ahead and had my burger made the same way as my hot dog, all the way. It made for one hell of a mess, but it was delicious. I definitely enjoyed my meal, but to be honest, neither the burger or the hot dog would rank in my top 5 in the state. Doesn't really matter, as at the end of the day, I would certainly come back here because I am sure it's the best burger in the area, and given the amount of burgers and hot dogs I have eaten being "outside the top 5" doesn't mean you're doing poorly. Cash only, so come prepared, but definitely come!

The street situation precluded a few spots downtown, and since we weren't in the mood for our go-to taco place, we decided to head out to the Family Diner. The walk-in was awkward on our part- cash register or hot bar line first? A sweet call from the kitchen of "Y'all's first time?" got us headed in the right direction. Full disclaimer: I've been nostalgic for the southern cafeteria lately. While talking to some food industry friends last week, we realized there is something powerful about the food we all remember from K and W. And while Family Diner doesn't have a giant dining room or a 5-snake velvet rope line to get to the counter, it does take me back. Here's how we made our choices: the hot bar was a choice of three types of chicken- the baked and fried were tempting until the gentleman serving us says: "We can fry you fish to order. Flounder, trout, and catfish." The chicken got skipped for a plate of flounder (plentiful plate, btw), and a side of the Mac and cheese and cooked cabbage. The kid sampled the catfish plate, same sides. Sweet tea. And yes ma'am, I'd like the cornbread. Done. We sat down at a table in the main, cozy dining room. The first thing that I noticed: this place is clean- tidy, even. There was a super polite young man moving around and busing tables, tidying up unassumingly and doing it in a way that is lacking in some finer dining places I've been in recently. The food came out, piping hot. I used one of the malt vinegar packets to douse my flounder (a cafeteria habit) and dug in. The first bite was light and flaky, cooked perfectly. Nothing greasy-tasting, at all, just clean. The sides were great- nothing over seasoned, and like cooking at home, there was room for you to season things to your taste. Well played, Family Diner. The owner (I think? She was the one who guided us down the right path when we walked in) came out to make sure that we were happy, and yes ma'am, it's great, and holy cow, you just dropped this cornbread into the skillet and fried it? Yes, we will be back. It's unassuming, and it's just what the doctor ordered. It's a cafeteria, but it's clean and polite and makes you feel good that you ate there. It's soul food, but not just from an ethnic standpoint- it makes me happy and full and feel welcome and I'll be back.

Apparently having a burger named for you is not unusual in this area. At Chris' Drive In down the road in Siler City, there is a Rollie Burger (the Original Rollie Burger, I assume) named for a cook there. The Rufus Burger is a good, greasy small diner burger, pretty tasty. The chili dog here is good as well, even though it does not appear to be named for anyone. The chili is flavorful, and there could be more of it on the dog; the bun is nice and soft; and the wiener is of the red Southern variety. A sign on the front further states that this place has the best Barbecue for miles, and since this is the only place to speak of between Siler City and Sanford, it probably is not an outrageous claim. The Barbecue sandwich comes in small for $3 and large for $4, and the small is a 2 hander, have no ides how you would go about eating the large one. The chopped pork is tender, but it has a mustard based sauce, and I'm not fond of that type of sauce. Friendly folks, decent service, kinda funky - worth a point of opportunity visit.
