Stopped for lunch today and enjoyed their lunch combo specials. Hubby and daughter had the chicken tikka masala which comes with salad, rice, and naan bread. I had the saag paneer lunch special which had the same accompaniments. The chai tea was the best we ever had. Our server advised us it was made fresh. Mmm, still thinking about the drink. Our server Eduardo was the best and so kind! The restaurant is beautiful and we had a great seat by the street so we could look out. Can't wait to go back again!!

Came here on the recommendation by a friend who I would trust with the question; what is your favorite Indian restaurant in the area? This was her pick and I'm so glad I asked. Came here for the first time, after having walked past it for many years, since I already had "my Indian place" and it did not disappoint. Equally important, the man that welcomed us and took our order, he seemed like the owner because he was so good and you could tell he cared about customer service. See photo for the food, all of it was great.

I wasn't super thrilled with my experience here. Granted, we did takeout, so take it with grain of salt. However, overall the food we got here was quite bland. It certainly tasted like Indian food, but overall I wasn't all that impressed. Particularly the Saag Paneer didn't quite do it for me, just quite lacking in flavor. I also was a bit disappointed that it didn't come with any form of side, naan or rice. While I understand I could have ordered it separately, generally I view it as pretty standard to include something to eat it with.

This might be my new favorite restaurants, hands down. I've always been a huge fan of Indian food, and I struggled finding solid restaurants in or around Berkeley UNTIL I stumbled across Khana Peena. Just a few blocks down from the Rockridge BART station, this quaint restaurant is so warm and cozy, with fantastic service. Immediately was happily greeted when I walked in and taken to a table. Everyone who worked there very kind, courteous, and gentle. Not to mention, this was some of the best Indian food I've had around Berkeley. One thing I really love about the dinner platter in particular is the VARIETY, not only do you get the main course, but you get rice, AND naan, AND lentils, AND grilled vegetables. It's quite fantastic and you can't get anything like this anywhere else near Berkeley/Oakland! I'll be back.

Ok let's start with service. This place has absolutely elite service. We were treated very rudely before we came to Khana Peena and the staff there are incredible. They are so fast and nice and responsive. Nothing but good things to say about the servers here. Even the new employee was really knowledgeable and welcoming. The food is excellent. I had a chicken tikka masala with veggie pakora to start. The pakora was perfectly fried and super rich. The masala was sooooo buttery and delicious. Just an all around excellent meal. I will say they definitely toned down the spice so make sure that you order the most spicy option if you're a fan of the heat. The drinks were also fantastic. Nothing to add here except go here for a great cocktail! All around this place is excellent. No notes from me!

Saag Paneer A La Carte

This is a casual Indian place in Rockridge with some indoor and outdoor seating. If you're Indian I really don't recommend coming here. My friend insisted on Indian food and we were shopping nearby so we just sat down for lunch. I'm giving two stars for generous portions and polite service. I tried to go basic when ordering so as not to get too disappointed. The saag had no masala or flavor it was like plain cooked spinach with onion and cream. Not much salt, spices garlic or ginger. Paneer was not tender and fresh. The naan was rather thin, dry, and not very fluffy. I ordered garlic naan which is typically coated in fresh garlic and ghee. The naan was also not flavorful no ghee and not much garlic flavor. The beautiful aromas and textures of authentic Indian food were missing here. The server was polite but not experienced. For example, they put in one person's order at the table and then came back to get the other person's order. It was odd and confusing. My non Indian companion thought her chai was subtle in flavor but still enjoyed it and also her tikka masala. It did not look appealing to me. To make matters worse I got an upset stomach after this meal which is so disappointing.

Very nice atmosphere. But they charge $10 for a beer. I think that's unacceptable. Especially with their other prices.

I understand that security staff have a job to do and need to keep entrances and walkways clear. However, the way the situation was handled felt completely unnecessary. I was not causing a disturbance, and there was no reason for physical contact. Being grabbed so aggressively was uncomfortable and unprofessional. I hope management addresses this issue and speaks with the security staff about appropriate ways to interact with guests. First impressions matter, and this interaction immediately impacted my experience.

A dog friendly place, McNally's is the perfect place to bring your furry best friends (and human ones). It is a mix of regular barflies and the occasional newbies. One time, an anti-dog lady came in with her date, ordered table martini service, took over our fireplace table, and no one was impressed. We started to come here more once they built the parklet during the pandemic. They also promoted their cocktails at this time. We would sit outside with dogs and friends and came to love the casual lowkey location. There is a large room in the back that we made the mistake of sitting in once. Great if you have a group, but cold and dorm community room feel vs the comfortable bar feel of the front area. There is also a backyard nook along the side of the building for smokers or those that want to watch dvds. They have darts, which i was surprised to see someone actually play once, a small pool table with a special name that escapes me, and a jukebox that you can pay for songs. We usually patronize in the earlier hours and Alfred is our bartender. He knows peoples' orders before they order it and lets us tend the fireplace on cold days. He has treats and water for the dogs. You can pay cash or credit card here which adds to the appeal over two other bars in the area that are cash only. There is one female and one male restroom on the back wall. The female one is always clean but the swinging door sticks. Don't make the mistake of waiting as you probably just have to push it in harder. We prefer the fireplace table if it's a cold day out (otherwise the corner booth in the parklet) as it's easy to park the dogs there, eat the burrito you brought in, absorb the fire rays, watch the games, and conversate with your friends in a circle. We usually have more friends than fit the table but we spread out around the nucleus. The corner table is also great if they have the overhead lamp turned off. Otherwise it's harsh in your eyeballs. There are several televisions so you can get a good view of whatever sports is on wherever you are sitting. Lots of stools and just a few regular chairs. They do have special events from time to time and you have to look out for flyers on their door or the occasional social media post. I am counting down the days to saint Patrick's day, which they do also on their countdown sign over the bar. Neighborhood parking is free or street parking is free after 6pm, all day Sunday and holidays. You can also park at the library around the corner, it's considered street parking. There are several eateries to take out food and bring in to McNally's. There's a trash can near the door or the main bins are on the side of the building. If you forgot a utensil, ask at the bar, they may have it for you. Food wise they only offer potato chips for purchase.

My partner was wearing strappy little heels, yes high heels, and really didn't feel like walking too far. Upon entering I knew we should have turned around and walked out but we didn't. The lady  behind the bar had a scowled gringed up face when we walked in. Like lady haven't you ever seen a hot girl in a dress and heels before???? We forgot you can't dress nice and smile in Bezerkeley. I ordered a Tequila Ocho with lime and my partner ordered a Lemon Drop and here we go again with attitude from behind the bar. She had to ask the dude if he could make one and she came back with yes. He popped in with can't do a sugar rim.  Andrea responded with she didn't want a sugar rim and make it less sweet. Eye rolls!!!! Later as we are sitting there enjoying such a lively and inviting space the bartender dude is talking to another customer about who orders a lemon drop without a sugar rim. Andrea let him know just moments before he couldn't do a sugar rim. SMH!!! Again, Bezerkeley. Hipster, self important, we are all so unique little snowflakes, we all look and act alike crowd. Yep, that's Bezerkeley. And the drinks were outrageously expensive. Two drinks and almost $50 before a very undeserved tip. The are lots of surcharges and extras tacked on to bills in the bay area. I think we just got the "hot girl in heels in a hipster frown bar" surcharge. A one and done never going back experience. Left and walked about 300 ft to Wood Tavern. Still on College Ave but at least over the city line and in Oakland which has its own set of problems.
