Thanks to my boss for introducing me here. I had a $50 gift card and since I love Indian food, I knew what I would order. As always, chicken masala and garlic naan. Recently I found out that they have all you can eat lunch buffet for under $15. Select items are laid out by the register for you to eat. I would browse there before ordering from the menu if you go during lunch time. I tried something new my last visit and ordered the Seafood Curry and it was pleasantly different. It came with a light colored curry sauce that blended perfectly with the seafood. Normally I wouldn't order something new but I'm glad I did because I can add that to my list of things to order next time I come here. There's inside and outside seating. The outside seating area is great on a nice sunny day as there is a covering that eliminated direct sunlight from burning you as you eat. read more

Food was decent but was overpriced for Indian food. Lack of service too, it was super slow ... took them about 40 mins for them to bring the entrees. The plate looks huge (dinner) but it's nothing but a half scoop of rice and probably scoop of curry sauce , 3 -4 pieces of grilled veggies and 1/2 naan for around $18 a dish.. very pricey. You can get about 2 entree in other places. Dirty... once I sat down I saw their tablecloth has a lot of curry spots on it in which I wouldn't know how long it has been there.... This is our neighborhood go-to for Indian food, a family owned and run business that hires staff who are also super friendly and caring. The food is really good -- and if you like it spicy don't be afraid to order it Indian spicy. That is the key. Delicious cocktails as well. P.S. To the reviewer who said the food was bland, saag paneer is a typically mild dish ... I ate it in India and thought it was boring, but I was with people who don't like spicy food. :) The key at Khana Peena is to select the spice level of the dish you're ordering and if you like it spicy go for the spiciest. read more

Kanna Peena, what happened!? I've had some wonderful meals here but tonight I ordered takeout Karahi Lamb. It was bad. I didn't finish it. The garlic naan was rubbery, and the mango chutney was like an unpleasant orange-colored jam. I called and asked if the chef had changed and was told no, same chef, same recipes. I'll go back one more time (it's in my neighborhood), and I'll write another review. Hopefully a good one. read more

This review is long overdue. We have been going to Khana Peena for over five years now. Always met with a smile and good humor, great food and great service. The food is authentic Indian cuisine, and is consistently good. We always know that when we sit down to eat or order take out we will be getting a great meal. The tikka masala curry, malai kofta, tandoori chicken, and naans are excellent. And the gulab jamun dessert is wonderful as well. We have even ordered food for catering parties, and have received many compliments. The food is kid friendly too - our kids will eat the mild tikka masala and tandoori chicken. We ordered vegetable pakora which was served hot. Then for dinner we ordered malai kofta and aloo gobhi which were served fresh too! Great drinks and food, especially for vegetarians! We usually get some of the dinner combos that come with the grilled veggies and naan. Our family has been coming to this restaurant for around 10 (?) years. My kids LOVE the chicken tikka masala; for them Khana Peena's is the best and they always ask for it. And we've been to lots of different Indian restaurants! We also like their lamb saag and naans. The outdoor space is pleasant and relaxing. The service has always been really nice. Excellent and delicious food - we had chicken tikka masala, mango chicken, prawn tikka masala, and tandoori chicken, plus mango lassi and two different kinds of naan (plain and paneer). I will go to the ends of the world to support Desi businesses, but NEVER again. This experience left me stunned and disgusted. Owner was working as a waiter and exhibited a particularly disgusting toxic attitude towards my friend and me. He not only acted like we had inconvenienced him by walking in, but at one point yelled at me in Urdu when I asked to order chai. Uncle has a problem serving younger womxn in his community and bullied other customers in front of us. Located on College Ave, Khana Peena is housed in a modern styled building. It has nice patio dining area in front and on this past Friday evening, they had some musicians playing smooth jazz. With their windows open, we opted for a table by the window near the entrance. I am most definitely not a connoisseur of Indian food, but my experience at Khana Peena was enjoyable. I came here with coworkers for the lunch buffet. For less than $10/person, there was a decent variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, including: chicken tikka masala, chicken curry, tandoori chicken, saag, cabbage, and salad. There are also a few chutneys and raita available. The chicken tikka masala was pretty good, especially paired with warm naan, although I've had better at cheaper Berkeley restaurants. The tandoori chicken was a bit bland but very tender. It's a buffet though, so I can't really complain. I didn't try too many of the vegetarian items this time as I was pretty stuffed after 2 plates! If you're in the area for lunch and looking for lots of cheap Indian flavors, come here. If you're craving high quality and authenticity, you may want to go elsewhere or try the regular menu items. Our large group got great service, everyone loved their food, and the portions were generous. I really loved the lamb tiki masala, as well as the pomegranate chicken I swiped from my friend, and the chicken pizata we ordered as a starter. Most of us ordered medium (3) level spiciness, which wasn't spicy. If you want a good level of spice, level 5 is probably perfect. Staying with my friends and we got take out for dinner from here. The kids love Indian food so it was their choice. Here's what we ordered: Vegetable Samosas -- filled with potatoes and peas -- served with mint sauce and tamarind sauce. These were okay. The filling was a bit bland. Chicken Tikka Masala -- your standard butter chicken dish. The chicken was all white meat which was nice, but a tad overcooked. Chicken Korma -- Loved the flavor of the korma, the chicken was a tad overcooked like the chicken tikka masala. There was lots of vegetables in the korma in comparison to the chicken (chicken tikka masala had much more chicken chunks). Vegetable Korma -- don't order this if you already ordered the chicken korma. There is enough vegetables in there without you having to order the vegetable as well. Baigan Bharta -- eggplant with onions and spices -- I liked this. Nice flavors, but mild. It was a nice change to the heavier other dishes we ordered. We ordered 3 types of naan bread -- sesame, garlic and raisin. The raisin was for the kids. I liked the garlic and sesame, but texturally it wasn't the best I've ever had. They cook and prep food with the door wide open so flies, bugs and rats, yes rats can easily enjoy your meal as well. I live in the neighborhood and have seen how they dispose of their trash. They wash their dirty mats on the sidewalk so if you're parked near the door come closing time, your car will end up with food all over it. The sidewalk where they wash off their mats is oily, dirty and it smells like whatever is decomposing since they don't wash the sidewalk after leaving their nasty mess behind.
