Fantastic bike store and wonderfully friendly staff. Dan is always good with giving us a check-up and after I bought a bike recently, he offered a free lockdown of the bike seat and gave me plenty of tips on preventing it from being stolen. When he came to see my off he said come back anytime for a free check up on the chasis, tire pressure, whatever. Even though I had visited this store when I lived in midtown 6 years ago and have since moved out, I now intend to make the trip back whenever I need bike services. Highly reccomend. read more

What a great place! I rented a bike over labor day weekend and since they were closed on Monday, and I therefore couldn't return the bike, they let me keep it until Tuesday no charge. The employees were very helpful finding me the right bike for my weekend plans and I had a great time exploring the city and surrounding areas (I went up to Poughkeepsie on the train, bike in tow). It was our first time bike shopping, and neither of us were very knowledgeable regarding the landscape of different options. Ben and Andrea were a godsend. By far the best bike store in New York City, with a homey feel. They were helpful and honest and gave us genuine advice; they weren't trying to sell us anything. We went there twice before we settled on a bike, and throughout the entire experience, I felt like I was buying bikes from friends. They also had a unique selection of bikes that included models well-suited for petite frames that they source from Asia (ask for the "mini velo," which works well for a variety of builds). I am happy I found this place ! This is a gem in our neighborhood. Ben is a super super nice guy so us his partner Andrea. I had a problem of my holding bike's tire which was quickly replaced by them. My daughter's bike's tire was flat which was also resolved by them efficiently and quickly. I also rented a bike once during my bike's repair period. Their rental bike's are high quality, but not sure for a price wise so it may be better to think to buy a bike at their place so that you can be taken care of very well. Today I went to check my bike's air, which was taken care of by Ben for free of charge (took 1 minute). I fell they are our bikes' primary care doctor and very important essential workers ! read more

This place saved my ass when the crank arm on my bike decided it was time to die right in the middle of a ride up 1st avenue on my way to Yankee Stadium. I was shocked there was a bike shop in this neighborhood at all, even more shocked that it was so close by where I had stopped, and triply shocked to find that it is one of the best bike shops I've been to in the city. The people that run it were so accommodating, taking on the repair even though it was past closing time. The repairman did an awesome job finding and replacing the crank arm for my older-model bike, and even fixed the shifters without my asking ("they're awful and its annoying me," he said.) After I left, my bike rode like it had just gotten a full tune-up, even though I went there for an emergency repair. Family-owned, reasonable prices, awesome service. Great, great place. It was 10 minutes to 6pm on Sunday evening when I was in Midtown East en route to go West for a long bike ride home with lots of groceries when I suddenly had a flat tire. Considering the time, I looked through Yelp and first called a few other bike shops near the West side asking if I could come in, but none of them would remain open past 6. Frustrated at the thought of having to schlep all the way home on foot I then decided to give Yelp one more shot and try Kickstand Bicycles. They were further east from where I originally started from and the owner/manager (I presume) told me they were closing at 6pm. I explained my dilema and he was very empathetic, he didn't want to see me stranded. He was nice enough to keep the store open for a few more minutes if I hustled on over to the shop. That alone was amazing! Once I got there the owner/manager and his co-worker went to work replacing the innertube on my bike and carefully examining a troublesome tire with alot of dedication. I was so impressed. It maybe a rather small bike shop, but it's lovely and filled with a dedicated, good-natured staff that restores my faith in humanity. read more

I had the pleasure of renting an almost new hybrid perfectly adjusted and ready for the Manhattan roads and bike paths. they provided a quality helmet and bike lock, free maps and all the personalization a visitor or regular could ask in for a rental. read more

i visited this shop on my way home because my headset had developed a little play - 10 seconds and large adjustable wrench is all i needed. i asked to borrow the wrench, thinking this would be no problem at all, considering the shop had a repair stand sitting out on the sidewalk. wrong. the harried-looking woman whom i asked brought me what looked like the smallest wrench they had, and when i asked again, pointing to the part, she said "oh no, the mechanic won't lend any tools out" and rushed back inside. so, not only did this person know fuck-all about bikes, but refused to let me use a standard, not even bike specific tool that i needed to use briefly to continue home. i was extremely surprised by this treatment and won't ever be returning to this shop. read more

I was in search of an entry-level, affordable but good-looking commuter bike and I found what I wanted here. I got a Torker U-District, which is probably one of the lightest for its price range. Service was very good, and Ben, the owner, certainly had a sense of humor. He helped me install all the bits and bobs that I wanted on my bike, and made sure that everything was on well. Went here out of necessity for a Kryptonite bike lock. I had just caught a guy trying to steal my bike on Fifth Ave and he was almost done breaking up the lock that I had. I was riding my bike and my shifter derailleur thing broke. I considered whether I could fix it myself then decided I didn't want to spend hours on something a professional could probably fix in minutes (and I didn't want to spend hours scrubbing oil off my hands). So I looked for a bike shop near where I was and found Kickstand on Google. It was Sunday afternoon after 5pm so I was happy they were open. Well, I really love this place! Andrea is a dream, so nice and helpful. I was going to buy some stuff online to save some money but these guys offer about the same prices for helmets, pumps, baskets etc. It's always nice to build a relationship with your local bike store anyway and you can't put a price tag on that! A gem of a place that I can't recommend enough. My boyfriend and I came here looking for a bike (for him). Prior to coming here, we had no idea what to look for or get - we scoured the internet and sites like REI, asked friends, sought online deals, and came to the conclusion that we needed the help of an expert/real life human being. Andrea and Ben were both awesome. They were patient, incredibly informative, and just downright cool people. After three separate visits - never once being pressured or swayed in any direction - we decided on one of their excellent bicicletas. I usually frequent shops on the Upper West because of where I live but I was at work today and realized I left my lights at home so I had to find a bike shop ASAP! Kickstand was a quick ride from the office and I am so glad I found this place. The staff was so friendly and knowledgable. They even took requests on what kind of music I wanted to hear while I waited. I bought a simple clip-on light for my Linus but the rear rack didn't offer any good placement. Ben fashioned a bracket that worked out perfectly. He tried several different things and actually apologized to me that it took a few minutes! I was shocked. Most shops wouldn't even create a bracket system for me, they would just leave me to my own devices. It is amazing that the customer service I received on a simple $50 purchase was better than service I have received when buying a $700 bike before. I was in New York visiting family when I signed with a new bike sponsor. I needed help putting together a new bike quickly so I could ride it a few times before heading to South America for a pair of races. I called late on a Friday before a holiday weekend. Ben (the owner) was busy with a few other bikes, but managed to fit in my work right away. He did a great job and got me rolling that night. The shop is in no way a high-end bike shop. It caters more to commuters and common-man bikes. The shop is small, but offers great service, and good conversation while you wait. I would recommend it to a friend, and I'll go back there myself if I need any more work done in NYC. read more

I went in to the shop because I was having an issue with my cycling cleats (which I had stupidly purchased online rather than at a bike shop) and they could not have been more friendly and helpful. The guy behind the counter immediately figured out what was wrong (something 5-6 other people were not able to do) and fixed them for me right away. Knowing I did not purchase the clips or cleats at their shop, they still did this no questions asked without charging me anything. Next time I need anything from a bike shop, I know where I'm going. I recently bought a road bike from Kickstand. It was my first bike purchase in NYC. Ben and his wife Andrea were both extremely helpful in guiding me through the process in selecting a bike. Ben spent at least and hour with me going through the different kinds of road bikes, materials used, components, etc. Based upon his suggestions, I tried 3 road bikes and chose the one that best suited my needs. They close at 7PM but were with me until about 8:30 getting me sized for the bike, putting me on the spin machine to let me get a better feel for the bike and training me on how to best keep the bike in good shape. This truly shows how dedicated they are to customer service and attaining a spectacular reputation. The prices are extremely competitive with any other store in the city and identical with prices online, which is unheard of for any brick and mortar. All in all, the customer service, bike knowledge, and extremely friendly atmosphere is something that makes this LBS quite special. I have mentioned this place to a lot of friends and they plan on going to Kickstand to buy bikes and use them for all future biking needs. I stopped here to get a flat fixed and thought the owners were so nice that I scheduled a tune up for later in the week. Bike shops and record stores are the kind of places that you walk into and automatically feel that the owners hate you, not so here! They did a great job with my tune up, and my bike is riding really smoothly. While most other places probably would have tried to sell me on a new tire to replace one that's starting to wear thin, they were just honest and straightforward saying "yeah, maybe you need one soon, but you still got a few more miles left on this one." I live in Brooklyn and probably would have never found this place if I hadn't gotten a flat nearby - now I think I'll probably go out of my way to go to their store! read more

This is my second year going to Kickstand for my bike tuneup. It is reasonable, easy to get in (I always make an appointment during busy season though) and the owners are so wonderful. They tell you what your bike might need in the future but they don't try to sell you a lot of stuff you don't need today. Also, Ben was super helpful in showing me how to remove and reset my rear wear. He even let me take a video of the process. I highly recommend this shop. read more
