I had a great time at this store getting a skin consultation with Abby and the dermareader. She recommended great products, I'll be ordering the under eye treatment she recommended. It was great to see my skin under UV and see the UV damage, pores, and hydration levels as those were my biggest concerns. I wasn't sent a copy of the results afterwards, but that's all right, it seems the system is still getting up and running. I usually go to Kiehls at the Grove in Los Angeles which is awesome! The staff are so helpful, professional and they always give me samples so I've discovered really good creams. I've since been using the Rosa Arctica line which I love. But the Kiehls at this location has really bad service. They are not helpful, they're even condescending and they refuse to give samples. I think the sales clerk said, "if I give you samples you won't buy the product." How am I supposed to know what I want to buy if you don't let me try it? I was telling my friend about this and he told me they know him, he is a chef at the Four Seasons, and ended up getting some samples for me. So they do give samples if they know you or know of you. Meanwhile I am the one who was going to purchase a product, not my friend, and got no help whatsoever. I don't get it...I do love Kiehls but this branch could use a facelift in customer service. The nicest and smartest Kiehl's store in the US. I'm not from Boston, but I wanted to stop by this kiehl's shop b/c I needed a few things. The staff was super friendly! They were all very knowledgeable about kiehl's products, the competitor's products, and future kiehl's products. You could tell that they not only sell the product, they really believe in the product that they sell. Let me just start off by saying that this is a review of the Kiehl's store on Newbury street, not a review of the products they sell. I'm a fan of Kiehl's products, but I'm not a fan of their store on Newbury street. I would rather purchase their products at Saks or Nordstroms than go to their Newbury street location. The store has horrible service. I have never been greeted within the first few minutes of entering the store and the staff is never available when you have questions. Just recently I purchased a gift card for $150 and the clerk acted like she was doing me a favor. How inappropriate! Now, for the reason why I had to Yelp this store. Recently, my boyfriend and I went to the store to get him some products with the gift card that he received from me. THE SALES ASSOCIATED TOOK THE GIFT CARD WITHOUT CREDITING IT TOWARDS OUR TRANSACTION AND DID NOT RETURN IT TO US! My boyfriend paid unaware of the discrepancy in price since the card had only $40 left on it. It was not until later much that he realized what had occured when looking at his bank statement. $40 lost isn't the end of the world, but it's insult to injury at a store that is already so overpriced. I am obsessed with the circles under my eyes. Obsessed, I tell you. So when I found Kiehl's Eye Alert, all caffeine-y and cooling, I was hooked. I had been to the Kiehl's section of Barney's for lotion but the store is so much better. Neat and clean, with lots of testers (a whole table full, actually) and everything you could need for your hair, skin, make up needs, lip balm needs, and dark circles needs (score!). I also got scolded for using St. Ives exfoliate (shh - it was actually Target brand - don't tell!). So i succumbed to peer pressure and bought some facial scrub. I like the step up in quality, but don't know if I can handle the price increase for too too long. The staff is a little chatty (with themselves) so you have to seek them out, but they are friendly and helpful when they know what you want. (They also give you free examples if you ask.) read more

I like to actually go into the Kiehls store instead of buying my products at Saks or Neimans because A) the Kiehl's staff actually know the product and B) SAMPLES! They freely give out samples of all of their products which I think is an incredibly expensive, yet intelligent, business decision. The Kiehl's shaving cream is by far the best that I have used. I also really dig the blue astrigent lotion for after shaving redness. The hand cream is very good in the winter and the shower gels are a nice treat, although way too expensive. The other really nice thing about the Kiehls store is that they will make up custom gift boxes on the spot. It is a great last minute gift destination. I've already said that I get turned on by little aromatic jars and bottles, which makes Sephora a special treat for me, but have I mentioned how I respond to people in white coats? "White coat hypertension" they call it, which means my blood pressure soars with excitement when I see someone wearing one. Ironic, considering... So, Kiehl's has that special pseudoscientific cosmeceutical vibe that somehow makes you feel like the tea tree oil toner you're considering has a solid proven research basis for claiming to smooth out your skin like no one else can. It's good, it inspires confidence. The gentle boy at the counter was clad in a white coat and was ever so useful in helping me pick out an appropriately preventive line of product for my not-yet-old skin. I'm a big fan of the tea tree oil toner, actually, and also of the abyssine undereye cream and calendula moisturizer. The store is organized, and bright. The tester display is an absolute playground for someone like me, makeup, creams, scents, they've got everything. On Sunday, I painted my lips and eyes with their makeup line - very nice. Plus, guys, a line of men's products for the metrosexual in YOU - I just wish my manly husband WAS a metrosexual so I could buy him stuff... Obviously great products, but this place is snob city. The staff seems annoyed that you're there and bored when they're describing their products. For a place that sells such great, tried and true stuff, you'd think they'd be all positive and up beat when recommending things or finding a good match for their customers. I felt like I had to pry information out of the salesperson and it looked like she was annoyed that I didn't already know the details about their facial scrub ingredients. Between a girlie girl and a gay man, we brought enough products to Boston to overwhelm the city. But sometimes you just need something more. The gay boyfriend was running out of his moisturizer and I knew I wouldn't make the rest of the trip without buying more facial cleanser. I could have gone to CVS on the same fancy pants street but decided to splurge and get myself a travel kit of facial cleanser, moisturizer, toner and the coveted lip balm for a measly $24.50. From the overjoyed, obnoxiously pushy "you should totally stock up because our products last for up to three years unopened" to the entirely nonexistent staff even when you're the only shopper...the only consistent thing at this store is the product. Talk about a missed up-sell opportunity. More samples = more product tried = more product (likely) purchased at a future date. To be a recipient of anything from Kiehl's is the equivalent of me winning a mini-lottery of sorts; the stuff is so addictive and wonderful, but certainly on the expensive side, so your wallet may not love you as much as your skin will. But you have to live with your skin every moment of the day. You could technically toss your wallet somewhere and still survive. I'm particularly a fan of their hair products. My hair's mood changes more frequently than the predictions of a Magic 8-Ball, so it's comforting to know that there's a product or two out there that can tame the unruly and help me fool the public into believing that my hair takes no work at all. The facial products are also of the highest quality and I truly believe that if you don't walk out of Kiehl's with at least something to love - even just a little - you will the next time you go. I ordered a bottle of facial fuel. I placed my order online as a part of black friday along with a couple of other small products so I could save 10%. I placed my order online but selected in store pick up to save on delivery and was told that my order would be ready to pick up in store. When I arrived next day, not only was my order ready but the staff took quite a while searching for it. It could have been easily fixed if the staff just grabbed the products that i ordered and gave it to me in a bag. Eventually this is what happened yet they required me to charge my card again. This is after I gave them proof of my order and gave them my information (such as my name 3 times). I was told that my original charge would drop off but this has created extra hassle as what was the point of it all in the first place if I would just be required to pay again... read more

The first time i visited this store i had a bad experience because the counter guy didn't know a damn thing about the products. The next time i went in, a wonderful & knowledgeable employee introduced me to several new products - and i thought i'd tried them all. I got a free sample of their soy-honey body polish awhile back and I feel just plain awful using regular soap now. Their products might actually include sweet nectar of the Gods. I think im about to go poor, for the rest of my life. I just got some Kiehl's ultra facial mosturizer and omg its super duper! It has spf in it, which is great, but you expect anything with a sublock to bea heavy and greasy right? NOPE. So it feels heave on your fingertips, but when you smooth it out on your faces its like heaven and non greasy! My face feels so soft and normal, but not at all wet and greasy as many moisturizures do. I like the location as well, the prices stink but thats what happens when you start using amazing stuff. Whenever I buy anything, they always ask me what my sample preferences are and will throw ample free samples in my bag. I am a very happy customer and come here religiously. i'm a huge fan of kiehl's. i use a ton of their products and love the quality. i almost always go to the burlington mall location. they're really sweet, friendly, and super helpful. the newbury st location SUCKS! they are so unfriendly which is very unlike the other kiehl's stores. it's more of a get in and get out store which is not what you'd expect from a skincare line. sometimes they are downright rude. is it because this is a more touristy location? they need to get it together. with at least a smile...geeeez. read more

It seems to me that the products have changed and for the worst. The quality is poor and prices have gone up. they use to package in glass jars and now they use plastic. I find the service is terrible. They only cater to the younger crowd with lots of glitzy ads and fancy packaging. In fact the apothecary I knew as a teen in NYC was far different than this new branded product. The staff left me standing at the count with product in hand to purchase for almost 20 minutes and I eventually walked out with out buying anything when the "representive"told me "unfortunately, we are under staffed and I have to focus on the other customers " !! I got turned onto Kiehls by an article I read about 8 years ago in a Cosmo magazine - it was about their Ultra Moisturizer which supposedly every model used. While I have moved away from that particular product, I have become addicted to their gentle facial cleansers (particularly the foaming milk facial wash). Prices are higher compared to CVS but in line with higher end department store product. I used to think that Kiehls was "all natural" until I looked at the ingredients label - not very natural if you ask me! I've done all of my Kiehl's shopping online and today was the first time I went into an actual store. The store layout is pretty nice with shelves of products lining the walls. Since I was the only customer for a while, the salespeople were attentive, maybe a little overly so. Between the two salespeople hovering over me and the security guy watching me, it felt a little awkward to browse so I just got what I needed and left. I spent around 70 dollars there and got two packets of samples that the guy recommend I use with the products I just bought. It was nice to see customization and thoughtfulness on the part of the salesman, but I think next time I'll stick to ordering online, where I'll get free shipping, deluxe samples, and no security guy breathing down my neck. read more

I love Kiehl's! Most people think of this store as mostly a cream store for woman but they have some excellent men's products too. I love their men's bar of soap, it has a menthol smell that is very refreshing. I'm also a big fan of their shaving cream, it actually slightly numbs your face before shaving, excellent stuff. This place is pretty good. I used to have their facial moisturizer and I currently have one of their hair conditioners and deodorant. I just didn't repurchase their moisturizer because it's a little too expensive for me and the brand I am using now works just as well and is much cheaper. The conditioner (for very dry hair) worked super well the first time I used it and now it still works well, just not as good...either I got used to the effects or my hair got used to it so the effects aren't as dramatic. The deodorant, while pricey, works very well and is still going strong after almost one year. read more

I love kiehl's and have for years. Bottom line is they make great products, they also dont now and never have relied on or used animal testing. That is a big one for me. They also have a program where you can return the empties for rewards, the biggest being 25$ off, when you return 10 bottles (not trial size). When you throw something in a recycle bin, you're never really sure whats going to happen to it, at least thats the way i think, but here you know your empty will not just be recycled, but reused, which is way different than recycling. The return policy is pretty open as well, i've returned bottles without a receipt and been credited for it. "I just didn't really like it" is all I had to say. Also I've been to this Boston store many times and the crew has always been great, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and, it seems anyway, happy to be there and help. I would say the same for their stores country wide. It seems expensive, but if you find the products you love and use them sparingly, you can enjoy treating yourself well and feeling good about it. I mean come on, you're only here for a short while and then what? BTW, I like the men's facial fuel face wash and the big bar of soap the best. But seriously everything is great, you will never use any better 'after shave moisturizer' than the "Ultimate after shave balm and moisturizer". The empoyees where really helpful and looked professional in the the lab jackets. The products are great and not too expensive or great quality.
