Pollo asado and conchinita pibil tacos
    Daph H.

Irvine finally has good authentic Mexican food that doesn't cost an arm and a leg! Kika's Molcajete recently opened in the London Chippy spot in TRADE Irvine, serving tacos, burritos and plates with carne asada, carnitas, pollo asado, conchinita pibil and birria. They don't have online ordering, so I placed my order over the phone for pick up. The people working there are super nice and threw in complimentary chicharonnes de harina (Mexican wheel chips). Kika's has two salsas - a red and a green (red is spicy). The pollo asado burrito ($15.95) was huge and came stuffed with chicken, rice, beans, onions, guac, cilantro and salsa. I ordered a pollo asado taco ($5.75) and a conchinita pibil taco ($5.75). While they were on the pricier side, the tortillas are handmade and made fresh with every order. The tacos were completely LOADED with protein, with cilantro and onion and a generous serving of guac. The tortilla is thicker than normal but it's needed to hold that much filling. Absolutely loved the fresh tortillas and the conchinita pibil which was tender and flavorful. Orders come with a grilled green onion, radish slices and lime wedges. Great to see another option for Mexican food in Irvine! Parking at TRADE can be tricky, especially if you arrive at peak lunch time. Kika's Molcajete is somewhat hidden down the corridor by the bar, so you won't see it once you walk into the main food hall.

    Molcajete with Chicken and Shrimp

Amazing quality food! My husband and I split the molcajete and we do not eat red meat so they happily made it with chicken and shrimp only. The portion was generous and came with 6 amazing, handmade tortillas. Everything was cooked perfectly. The flavors were incredible! I would definitely give this new spot a try!!

Very flavorful authentic Mexican cuisine with great hand made tortillas! Highly recommend!

I recently went back after many, many years away and I have to say that the current owners have done a fantastic job of keeping what was always special about the place while updating some of the less-than-stellar things that existed. I think the scaled down menu really does the place justice - because you can still get a Dick's Scramble, but they've kept the menu minimal so everything feels intentional and tastes delicious. It's still diner food, but that's exactly why you're here. The coffee is strong and hot, the eggs are fluffy, and the service is friendly and fantastic. Love the old photos of Costa Mesa everywhere and the outdoor seating for families with pets. Dick's is a staple of CM, and you can tell it will continue to be with this great for years to come. And yeah, still highly recommend the Dick's Scramble.

But come to find out after an hour later, the girl who seats you forgot about us. After being seated, it took another hour for the food to come out. Keep in mind, we ordered everything right when we sat down because we were watching the tables as we were waiting for ours. One thing we observed was how the front door worker was seating people. Party of 4 was seated with three tables. There was room to move the tables apart and seat others who had been waiting but that didn't happen. We came here for Mother's Day and it was packed but service was quick. Not sure what went wrong on staff for Father's Day but it was not pleasant.

I'd found this restaurant on Yelp and convinced the others to join me in checking it out. It's a relaxed spot where you order at the register, receive a number, and then find your own seat. I usually feel rushed making menu choices when there's a line behind me, but this time, we were the only ones waiting, and the kids quickly decided on their breakfasts. Finding a table for four was effortless. The cashier was neutral--neither especially friendly nor rude, simply efficient at her job. My man really enjoyed his coffee, and I liked mine too, though I can't quite remember which kind of latte I ordered. We shared a Salmon Eggs Benedict--a perfect combination of poached egg, creamy hollandaise, and smoked lox. Delicious! My daughter ordered the kids' pancake with egg and bacon and said it was good. My partner's daughter opted for a huge breakfast burrito with chorizo--she liked it, but couldn't finish the generous portion. It was the perfect way to enjoy our final breakfast in Irvine.

The service here is quick and friendly and they make sure you always have coffee and it's hot (and there is always plenty of cream, 2 big pluses in my book). There is a daily white board of specials with 4 or 5 things that aren't on the menu, but I always go for something Mexican because it's just. so. good. My go to is the huevos rancheros. That sauce is *chef's kiss*. I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered here. The big debate is biscuits and gravy or the banana loaf. Both are solid choices, but the loaf is great to take home. This trip the hubs got the Rambo special which met his approval. We both like our eggs over medium and they do them right here with runny yolks and cooked whites. We leave here happy and full and satisfied every time. As busy as it was, I was still seated immediately in a booth. The interior is all yellow with a cowboy theme. It feels a bit dated, but everything is clean and comfortable. I was greeted and brought water and a menu almost immediately I ordered the Santa Fe Skillet (Three eggs, ham, Ortega chiles, jack cheese, avocado, $16.95) with a side of hash browns and sourdough toast. I was surprised when my food arrived only five minutes after ordering. They run a very efficient kitchen! When my food arrived, the server offered me their home made mild or spicy salsa to go with it. I chose the mild salsa, and it went great with the dish. The skillet tasted great and was filling. My server, Betsy, was very friendly and provided quick service from start to finish. I took my time eating, and was still in and out in a bit under 30 minutes.

Was here on a Wednesday and the special for that day was alfredo and garlic toast for 11.99 and a glass of wine for half off. Skipped the wine and got the good deal. Creamy, savory goodness. Hubby and I shared the Irish tots which is super yum although they could have done better with the portion of cheese. Plenty of bacon and bits of cheese here and there w/the tater tots. Big portion and most of it was taken home in a to go box. Sampled hubby's meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Savory goodness again! Mixed veggies were OK. Those were taken home. Awesome that they have Thrifty's ice cream! Generous and delightful scoops of rocky road and vanilla for hubby and I. Our server, Colin was so sweet and efficient. He shared that his grandfather lives in Torrance which were visiting from. Looking forward to a 2nd visit or trying the Los Al location!
