Kiki's to the rescue! I was heading to La Jolla for a wedding and found out that some of the beading/embellishments on my dress came off. I considered leaving the dress as is since the missing beads were in the back of the dress but being the MOG meant everything needed to be perfect on this special day. I called down to the Nordstrom in La Jolla to see if they could do an emergency fix for me since I bought the dress from there. They couldn't accommodate me. I started yelping for places around La Jolla and found Kiki's. I called, left a message and Tammy called me back within a few minutes. I asked her if she could fit me in if I dropped off the dress on Wednesday afternoon to be picked up Thursday at noon. She said no problem. I dropped off my dress that Wednesday. Tammy assessed the fix needed and had my dress ready to go by Thursday afternoon. What a lifesaver and what exceptional service. Sad to write a review that isn't positive but, I want to be honest. I originally found this business because of the reviews but I didn't have a great experience with my wedding dress. To make things worse after altering the dress my gown was never steamed which it should have been. The bustle and the length were not done at a high standard. I was misquoted a price and I felt like every interaction was rushed and impersonal. If you don't live near this shop I don't recommend driving out to La Jolla which is notorious for tough parking. I am very thankful I found Kiki's for my alterations. My wedding gown originally had buttons all down the back, but I always dreamt of a backless gown. Tammy is a HOOT. I want to be her friend. Know that if you've found Kiki's alterations, you might experience a wait time, but that's because everyone is coming here. The value and attention to detail is amazing. I went back for multiple fittings for my wedding dress, and not because things were wrong, but because they want everything to be perfect for you. If something is not up to par, Tammy will tell you, and then go back and adjust it to make it absolutely perfect. A friend of mine got married several weeks before me, and she got her dress altered at David's Bridal and spent around $700. Tammy's price was WAY more reasonable, and I had the bust takin in, cups added, the bottom hemmed, a bustle added, and let me tell you it was roughly half of David's Bridal's price. If Tammy says she doesn't know where your dress is, don't be a bridezilla, she's just yankin' your chain. Your dress didn't grow feet and walk out the door. Just because we don't know her sorting system, doesn't mean she doesn't. Get to know her personality, because she's hilarious and reliable, and it'll make the process fun if you can get to know her. Tammy is amazing!! She was able to fix my son's suit pockets that Nordstrom alterations said was "impossible" to repair and I would have to buy a new suit. I brought it to Tammy and she said "I'll figure it out".......and boy did she!! Working with Tammy was a great experience. She definitely knows what she's talking about and has good inputs. I came in with my wedding dress and needed it to be taken in, hammed, and bustled. I was able to tell her we had a lot of time since my wedding isn't until early summer and I had gone to her in February (I don't personally like to leave things like this for the last minute) and she was able to help. I will say she does get pretty busy so make sure you give yourself enough time. Also, don't go on Saturdays since that's when everyone is trying to see her. I was definitely guilty of going on Saturdays, but I went on a Tuesday and it was so much easier and quicker. I thought she was reasonably priced on what she did for my dress. I showed up with a wedding dress at least 4 sizes too big due to a bridal shop error, and requests for custom sleeves to to be added after sizing alterations, and they KILLED IT!! They always make you try on what you want altered so they can mark and pin it accurately. They will generally be able to accommodate whatever turnaround time you need. I have to get nearly everything I buy altered, so finding a good alterations place is as hard as finding a good hairdresser. I've been going to Kiki's for years and am very pleased. If I had to say anything negative it's that every once in a while it's pricier than my other alterations place but most of time, it's worth it. read more

Kiki's Alterations was hired to add small straps to a strapless dress for the school winter dance. The first mistake we made was in not clarifying the price before the work was begun. We picked up the dress after a week, and found out they charged $50.00 to add two spaghetti straps. This seems excessive. Then, while attempting to try on the dress to make sure everything fit correctly, one of the straps came off the dress. This was unacceptable. We returned to Kiki's within approximately one hour of picking up the dress. We spoke with Tammy who did not seem concerned that we had paid an excessive amount of money for a poor alteration. The straps were attached to the dress by laying them on the inside of the bodice and placing a couple of stitches through the straps. A knowledgeable seamstress should have known that this was not going to hold, especially with a teenager attending a dance. Tammy did take the dress back to repair the broken strap after a discussion. This was not a pleasant experience and not worth the exuberant charge for low level seamstress work. On a more positive note, when we returned the next day, Tammy was much nicer and apologized for the mistake. The dress was repaired and the work was much better. And our teenager looked amazing for her dance. We won't be utilizing the services of Kiki's Alterations again. There are other far superior and more reasonably priced alternatives in the La Jolla area. If you choose to use Kiki's Alteration services, we would advise making certain you understand the pricing up front and are clear on the type of alteration being made. read more

I'm gonna tell you straight up how it is at Kiki's. I've been going here consistently for over 8 years. I go here often, however, I do feel Kiki and Tammy have their strengths and weaknesses like any good business. STRENGTHS/What they do well: jeans (original hem or regular), men's and women's slacks, any kind of take in or let out (on basic clothing), designer wear (suits mostly) WEAKNESSES/Lacking: it's a small shop with a lot of customers and it is only Kiki and her daughter Tammy. If they have a few people in there ahead of you, it could take a little while to be serviced because they do the measuring themselves and only have 2 small (yes closet-like) changing rooms. The longest I've ever waited was 15 minutes, and yes, it felt like an eternity, but so what. If I can't wait, I'll run another errand and stop back by later. It is a very modest/simple shop, so don't expect Margaret's of La Jolla. I was recently married (OCT 2011) and chose not to bring my wedding gown here - I had it altered through the gown alterations specialist at M Bride, where I purchased my gown. I did so because I feel gowns may be a weakness of Kiki and Tammy due to the size of the shop, time they have and the amount of simple alterations they commit to. I take everything else there and it is ready a week (or less) later - leggings, jeans, suit jackets, slacks, blouses, repairs. I've only had one problem with an alteration in all the years I've gone here. It was shortening the sleeves of a Burberry coat and I was not happy with the initial turn out and they fixed it for me no problem and I was happy with the fix. Again, because this is a mom 'n' pop shop (minus the pop!) the service is much more casual and basic, however, once I got to know the gals and they know me, we chat, they take my clothing needs seriously and the prices are fair. They know my name and treat me well. I think once you know what to expect, you can decide if this is the type of alterations shop that will work for you or not. read more

Really disappointed.. I rarely (never) buy designer jeans but I found some I loved and came here to get them hemmed on the recommendation of a nearby high end boutique. They assured me I didnt really need to keep the original hem and just to go with a regular hem. I asked them to make sure they made the cuff at the bottom the same width as the original. When I got my pants home, the cuff was smaller than the original, which was part of the charm of the pants and they were hemmed TOO SHORT. They were very friendly and I didnt have to wait when I went in to drop them off but the quality was poor and I was not happy with the results so I probably wont return. read more

I have worked with countless tailoring shops. I even started my carrier in a tailor shop. Kiki's it's a lovely spot with genuine people and a family own feeling. Their customer service it's lovely and it's not for the uptight. They work hard and in a relaxed matter. Which I like and it makes me feel comfortable. I bring them only the most high end of clothing from Rick Owens to Balenciaga and they have pleasantly surprised me. Kiki worked wonders on my wedding dress! I went to her with the idea of pretty much redoing my dress. She didn't even sweat it! She made my A-line gown into a mermaid style, brought it from a size 10 to a 6 and created a beautiful sweetheart neckline. Not only that, but she is the biggest sweetheart a customer could ask for! I was always greeted and said goodbye with a hug. Don't expect to save money by going here. You pay for the quality that you get and you can expect the best! They are a mother daughter team and do an amazing job on all of my alterations. They have reasonable prices for their very professional work. I have never been unhappy with anything they have done. But you know, if I was all i'd have to do was to tell them and I know they would make it right. They strive hard to please and it is obvious they work hard at what they do. I found out about Kiki's because I would buy jeans at Let's Go down the street and they sent them to Kiki's to get hemmed. I took a pair of designer jeans here based on a recommendation from a friend. The process was anything but customer friendly. The store was very busy and it took about 30 minutes before I was serviced and when I was, I was asked to step into a closet and not a changing room. Again, they were very busy so this really didn't bother me. I came out, got measured and then I had to fill out all of the paperwork myself; they provided very little input into the process. After a week, I went to pick up my jeans and the customer service was about the same; again it was packed. I got my jeans, which were perfectly done - original hem just as I had asked and for $16. So...the two times I've been it has been crazy busy. The customer service was below average. The actual product that was delivered as perfect. read more
