Only spent a mere 3 minutes in this place and the woman was SO rude!!! I came here based on the reviews of complex alterations as I was needing a very nice, expensive dress fixed due to a hole. First, she even didn't greet me when I walked in and rather seemed annoyed and disturbed when I politely asked if she could help me with my dress, as if i'm impeding on her space. Then when I went to lay down my dress to show her; immediately said "this is a $1000 dress i'm working on, don't put your dress here!". Taken aback by her response, I showed her on a separate table and proceeded to show her the hole and then again immediately barked at me saying the only way is to take the dress up. She barely looked at the dress, did not hear me out as to what I was wanting for the dress, just plain rude and barked at me with some generic response as if that is THE only solution. Bad business and terrible mannerism. This short interaction was honestly appalling and would not recommend this place to anyone. Take your clothing to someone else who actually cares, wants to listen and welcomes potential business walking through her doors. read more

FULLY BASED ON WEDDING DRESS ALTERATIONS: I waited awhile to write this because I wanted to make sure I said the right thing and for my frustration to go away.. my wedding was April 16th and I went to pick up my dress from Mary Ann April 13th. During our consultation to have my dress taken in from a size 6 to a 2 she said she could do it, what she didn't say was how the ENTIRE pattern of my dress wouldn't line up at all anymore that pattern was the reason I bought the dress, it was meant to accentuate your body...My dress had lines the matched up from the front to the back which met on the side on my hip.. it looked like someone cut my dress open from the side (which it was) then sewed the front of the dress an inch higher to the back of my dress... not only that but the lining on the seams where my illusion back met the fabric on the dress was completely butchered and puffy and so noticeable!! The seam on the illusion where it was cut open to bring it in was also put back doubled up so it was no longer an illusion and I just had a seam of fabric floating near my armpit...3 days before my wedding.... The worse of it, she charged me almost $700 dollars!!! I specifically went to a local business to help out cuz of covid and also to have a cheaper price tag, that's soooooo much more than I was quoted at a bridal dress shop! And after her knowing I was so unhappy and on tears! She didn't discount a thing and continue to make remarks like it's my fault and I should of known... I expressed my frustration with it and not only did she say she can't fix any of it, she went to tell me she already told me all that would happen... if I would of known I would have NEVER let her take on my dress and have to panic 3 days before my wedding! I took it to a bridal dress alterations place and they were shocked! Shocked at what she did... and no way was that suppose to happen. They also pointed out that one shoulder strap was higher than the other one and significantly. They 100% fixed the seams and strap length ...and tried to match the pattern to meet the front but couldn't reverse all the damage sadly. I had to pay an extra $300 for that.. As I was talking to the bridal dress place, they told me it's as if Mary Ann took on something that was a bit more than she could chew and did her best, and that I get but you SHOULD NOT do that to a persons wedding dress. My dress was thousands of dollars.. and I loved it. 3 days from my wedding it no longer looked like the dress I first bought. I was not a happy bride in it but I had no other option... just had to focus on marrying the man of my dreams. Take your wedding dress to places specifically meant for wedding dresses, not here. You'll save money and heartache. That's what I get for trying to help out my community and small businesses. The picture attached is of the edge of the illusion meeting the fabric... The woman who runs this shop is extremely odd in regards to her customer service. I left in tears when I wanted a very simple alteration. She was fixated with my bra style, and seemed more concerned with the my breasts on sitting in a traditional sense (she mentioned working in lingerie?) than helping me as a customer. So sad. I hate to be the bearer of bad news. The owner of this shop, Mary Ann, had a desk in her store. She advertised it for sale for 40.00. I gave her the 40.00, found a mover, she never returned my call. I texted her, I even sent her my address to make it easy for her to mail the money. Nothing. The really sad thing is that when i called her again, she said she would be keeping my money, that I changed my mind, and because of that, she will not return my money until she sells her desk. I am perplexed, hurt, and frankly astonished that she would take my money from me. I don't know if she will sell her desk and give me back my money as she promised, but it looks like that may never happen. I hope that everyone who reads this spreads the word. I would recommend Stephan for alterations; he's on Cable and Santa Monica. Please be very careful about who you do business with. I've lived in Ocean Beach for many years, and this experience has been disheartening, to say the least. read more

I came to Seams to Me after searching for a tailor for months who could make my unique vision a reality: I wanted to use my wedding dress to make my daughters christening gown, while still salvaging enough of the dress to make it still be wearable in the future. Several others said outright they could not do it, while others said they could but not without completely dismantling the dress. Maryann was the only one skilled enough and brave enough to take on the the challenge. The result blew me out of the water; she crafted a gorgeous traditional christening gown and bonnet for my daughter, using not only the material but also the appliqués from my dress to really make that connection between the two dresses. She was able to do all of this with the train of my wedding gown, so the dress can be worn again, hopefully by my own daughter for prom, cotillion, or even her own wedding one day. I brought my wedding gown to Mary Ann for a few reasons. First, I've lived in OB for nearly ten years and always walked by her shop & was downright curious about it. I recall walking by her shop when it was dark out and seeing her working away into the night. I finally had something for her to work on! Always look for local businesses first, the buy-in for both the customer and the business owner goes up exponentially when you're neighbors. My dress is gorgeous but a seamstress' nightmare. It's a unique Leanne Marshall design with panels of silk here and there any everywhere with different lengths and I needed her to hem it all. She also fixed my delicate lace straps, the zipper and added in a custom bustle for me. Even tossed on a free ribbon sash for me. She is a lovely person with a strong work ethic and was welcoming of the challenge I brought to her doorstep. We communicated all along the way about fittings, timing, cost and to be sure the quote and timeline were variable along the way but that's part of working with a craftsman (craftswoman?). It's not always possible for someone to look at something and give you an exact cost because they just don't know. Communication is key people! Ultimately, Mary Ann cares very very much about your happiness as a customer and takes great pride in her craft. She doesn't take shortcuts. ALWAYS GO WITH YOUR GUT!!!! We had a wedding dress modified (some changes to the top portion of the dress) and provided the dress two and a half months in advance of the wedding. The end of the story is that we ended up with a nice looking dress but the end cost was significantly higher than the verbal quote (double the quote) and a very long delay in the start of the job made us very concerned that the dress wasn't going to be complete by the wedding day. The work wasn't really started until well over a month after we provided the dress for altering, this job didn't seen to be high priority to this establishment. She spent countless hours over a couple months making this dress fit me like a glove! Just to give you a better idea...it's a 2 layered dress. I brought in a wedding dress I had purchased second-hand online, which was close to my estimated measurements, but in places was too small and in places too large. I brought it in to Mary Ann on a recommendation from another bride friend. Mary Ann put my mind at ease and began pinning it up to my exact shape and specifications. She lended her professional opinions and eye for style and fit to the project, but always deferred to me to make the final decision. We worked in a few different steps and appointments every couple weeks to ensure that the fittings were correct prior to making any final cuts. Overall, she worked on adjusting the straps, adding bust cups, taking in the hips and extra material, hemming the length, and adding a beautiful French bustle. I'm so happy I found Mary Ann! I was in a wedding recently, and bought a bridesmaid gown that was pretty spendy. The store where I bought it had an agenda, I think. They had a tape measure and they did use it, BUT! Somehow they sized me 2 sizes too big? Hmm.....OOOOHHH! They have a seamstress on site....I get it! they wanted me to pay MORE for THEIR seamstress...no thanks! When I got home with the dress, I put it on, lifted up my arms, and it fell to the ground. I just want to advise you to Make sure YOU ask for a price quote before leaving your item here, otherwise when you come to pick it up you will get stuck with a bill that you might not have dreamed of receiving! She will not give you a price quote unless you ASK for it before leaving it there. She told me her policy is "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." I got stuck with an extremely high bill (even higher than the price of my item) bc I was not given a price quote before leaving my item to get tailored. To top it off, the work on my jacket is horrible. I hate the way she hemmed up the arms, too bulky and uneven! It was definitely NOT worth the amount I paid for. She also hemmed a very expensive bridesmaid dress for me and I hated the way it looked. I had a very bad customer service experience. In my opinion, you should Proceed with caution.
