I had heard about this place through an article and that it was rated top ten for bars in Food and Wine magazine. There was a $10 cover because they have a band. Ok fine. It was ladies night out and we had made reservations. We had a nice table and our server was very friendly and knowledgeable about the drinks. The drinks are unique but having experienced Manifesto, they paled in comparison. My friend tried the infamous smoke on smoke. It really did taste like you were sucking down a smoked bbq. So if that's your thing, then by all means have at it. I had the Tempest and it was good but not oh my god good. We also tried the Ultima Palavrihnha, the Bacchanal, The Bees Knees and the Fleur Diable. Though different in flavor, none of them had us with the wow that is amazing. We were there for almost 3 hours and still hadn't heard the main act. The fellow patrons were the pompus uppity crowd. Not really my thing and I found myself yawning more than I would like. I've been to the Kill Devil Club twice. The atmosphere is as good as it gets and the service is too. The food is simple, tasty and pairs well with their wicked-good cocktails, especially the Rum Punch bowl. The staff is friendly, attentive and fun. Never again. I loved the idea of this club and I enjoyed my first couple of visits (but looking back on it, the customer service was pretty bad even back then). But my experience last night was beyond awful. I spent three figures buying drinks for my friends and me. The server was just shy of openly hateful. This is a place for a person to sit in a nice atmosphere, away from the crowds of Jersey Shore wannabes who normally populate PNL, and focus on music. It's too loud to hold a conversation and the stage is the obvious focal point of the club, so be prepared to enjoy the show. I wasn't as enamored of the drinks as others who've reviewed. I found them small. The Bacchanal was a bit bland and half foam, although the presentation was amazing. The Tempest tasted delicious at first, but tasted like a red pepper at the end and became undrinkable. The small plates menu is sparse, meager and overpriced. The crowd is older (late 20s through middle aged) and well-dressed, yet casual. The atmosphere is amazing: swanky, dark lighting, blacks and reds, with throwback architecture. I love the guys who work here, I love the cocktails, the space is luxurious and comfortable and the sliders are delicious. However, the sound in the space is not great. The speakers are fuzzy and despite the live music being loud, there's not much else to say. I prefer being able to talk to the people I'm with without shouting, but if you are headed out to hear some music and have the best rum punch of your life - this place is for you. read more

Went for NYE party. Doors opened 30 minutes late, waitress has room for improvement, appetizers were cold and there were no surprises every hour, on the hour. Defiantly not worth $40 a person. Let me preface this by saying, my review for The Kill Devil Club has been incredibly difficult to finish, for no other reason than there is so many wonderful things to say about this place and I want more than anything to ensure that I give it the props it so desperately deserves. My first experience with KDC was prior to it's official opening, while working w/ the good people at PoP Fest, during the First Annual Paris of the Plains Cocktail festival. Yet another fantastic accomplishment from the KC Baller, Ryan Maybee, that brought us Manifesto located in salubrious confines of the Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange. A location, many a Kansa Citian has had the good fortune to visit and fall in love with but that is for another review. Mr. Maybee was gracious enough to host an event for PoP Fest here w/ the talented Mark Lowery providing the entertainment. Let me say, upon walking into this club, you feel transported back to a golden age of debauchery in KC. It is Prohibition Decadence at its finest, hosting red leather lounging booths that open you up to the entire room as well as candlelit tables providing the kind of perfect indiscretion, which has not been enjoyed since Bogie and Bacall. I am not ashamed to say that I immediately fell in love this Club and adopted it immediately as one of my favorite places in our fair city. Not only because it is beautiful to look at, providing one of the most breathtaking views of Downtown KC but also because the setting really makes you feel like you are an celebrity, if only in your own right. KDC promotes an air of glamour and decadence that is exhilarating and addictive. One of KDC's claims to fame is of course there amazing selection of Rums. The Bartenders and Manger, Scott Tipton at KDC have spent tireless hours creating some of the best cocktails recipes in all of KC. But fret not. If rum is not your thing you are sure to get a great cocktail, with whatever your spirit of choice, made to taste and absolute perfection. Mr. Tipton has made it his mission to keep this bar stocked w/ the finest sprits the world over. KDC also provide small plates of deliciously prepared food! A perfect accompaniment to all the cocktails you are sure to consume while being swept up in the atmosphere. Let me not forget to mention the music, OH MY, THE MUSIC. From Jazz to Swing to genres that have yet to be defined. It will not take long until you can't help but to leap from your chair, with a full glass of "Last Word" in hand and make your way to the dance floor. As I said, at the beginning, there are not enough good things I can say about this place and although, I am not one to spend an exorbitant amount of time in the Power & Light district of KC, this club is definitely worth the trek and one I enjoy making every chance I get So, polish up your dancing shoes, grab your best girl of guy and head down to Kill Devil Club to have a night, that you will not soon forget. Definitely one of the more unique venues in Kansas City. Not a good place for your average "rum and coke" - you have to try one of their specialty cocktails, which are made with love and care. One of their specialty drinks, Smoke on Smoke, is worth ordering just for the visual fun of seeing it being made. And their "punches" are flavorful and well-balanced. The bartender Homer is creative, fun, and hopefully soon to be one of KC's best mixologists. I've visited Kill Devil in the past and not been too impressed, but my mind has been changed! read more

I had a birthday party for my wife, and reserved a space for 4 hours with a size big enough for 20 people. I thought originally it was an overpriced venue for the food and space given, because I had never been there and this was purely word of mouth. I WAS SO HAPPY TO BE WRONG!!!! The place was soooo accommodating to the themed party I had planned. Jessica was helpful, supportive, and reassuring every step of the way beginning to the end. Once I arrived she was able to make sure everything was done exactly as I wanted. Andrew was on site throughout the party and able to answer any questions which were asked and quick to make sure everything was going according to plan. Matthew, also very helpful from making sure we never had to ask for anything such as plates, silverware, waters, hot food etc... He even put up banners and assisted with decorating. Joy and Emily were also superb bartenders, leaving no one wanting/ hoping for the next drink to be better drink than the last. Every time I'm in the mood for a craft cocktail my husband and I head over to Kill Devil club. On one of these random trips we happened to drop into a burlesque show. It ended up being a super fun night with awesome whiskey cocktails. read more

We stopped into the Kill Devil Club after a fabulous dinner downtown and a show at the Kauffman. We thought it would be the perfect way to end the evening, as we had enjoyed jazz and cocktails here before. We arrived and were pleased to find a fabulous jazz band playing, unfortunately to a very small crowd. The place was a mess, lots of dirty tables and nobody welcoming us. We chose a table and a nice young man cleared the dirty glassware. We waited a very long time for a server to greet us. She gave us an absurd amount of time to return to take our order. Our drinks took even longer, and they definitely were not worth the wait. She said they were swamped (not sure who she was serving)! There was a manager trying to help out she said, but he never made his way to our table to check on us - I'm sure she had told him we were not happy. Anyways, poor service, poor drinks, and poor management - a consistent theme that doesn't bode well for a nightclub on a Saturday evening...Talk about a buzz kill! read more

Made reservations for a group of 6 on a Saturday night. Got to the club and our table was waiting for us. The waitress was very attentive and answer all of our questions. Went to Kill Devil Club around 10pm Saturday night, overall the decor is nice, upscale and sleek with warm tones, leather and dark woods. The drinks were excellent, the Smoke on Smoke cocktail was absolutely crazy with hickory smoked ice! Never seen that before and it was nice to see someone was being so creative when that one was made. All the menu drinks looked exciting and worth a try. The servers were nice and attentive, the doorman was friendly and did his job efficiently. Some others in my group mentioned a cover charge, but I guess I smiled big enough that I wasn't asked for one, which was nice for me. I must say, I was surprised by the lack of people in there, especially at peak time on a Saturday night. Really only about 40-45 when I arrived and shortly after the band started that number dropped to about 20. When I was leaving, just before midnight, there were only a handful of people left. I think this is partly a result of the band, a weird folk, metal group with sad and disturbing songs. One was about losing a friend in a drunk driving accident, and another was about some fight they had with their old drummer... not really the mood setting music I would have liked to hear. The server had said that this was their first time having them, and I personally hope they do not come back. That is a large part of only the 3 stars from me. The other smaller part of that is that it was really way too dark in there, at least at the tables near the bar, having to pull out my phone so I could read the intricate menu was a pain, maybe one more candle on the table would have been nice. Overall, though I think I'd be back at some point, I like that this is downtown near pnl without really feeling like it is pnl. read more

Visited on a Friday night and was shocked that there was no live music for a place that states "live music that moves you" on the home page of their website. Setting that aside, I liked the cool vibe and decor of the restaurant. It was a little dark for my boyfriend's taste. Compared to other reviewers we were lucky to have a more mature crowd that was dining and having a good time, however we did have a 7:00 reservation, so maybe this is where the difference came into play. Our server, Jonathan, was fantastic! What a great personality and kind spirit - Kill Devil management, he is a gem! I loved the small plates, gave us an opportunity to try different foods. We ordered the Kill Devil punch in the punch bowl (there was only two of us and we finished it), at first the cinnamon was overwhelming, but once I got used to it, found the drink to be tasty. PS the cinnamon really disguises the amount of alcohol that is in the drink, so it sneaks up on you. On the fence as to whether or not we would make a second appearance next time in Kansas City. read more

Checked out their web site to verify someone was performing (it said there was) and even tried calling them but only received a voice message saying to leave a message and we will get back with you. Valet parked the car and went in only to find out that we were not allowed to stay because they were having a private party. WTH. Will not be going back here. The waitress was the worst I have honestly ever had. Our entire party was not visited more than 1 time in the 2 hours we were there. Everyone had to keep going to the bar for drinks. We couldn't even get our check from her. She was absolutely rude and should not be working there. Been there twice now; both times, atrociously bad service (took 15 minutes for a waiter to stop by table, 45 minutes for first drink to arrive; on first visit, took 45 mins to get check). Wait staff, who aren't terribly friendly, seem to just hang around the bar socializing with pals, ignoring customers. Drink arrived, the size of a shot. Ordered a beer second time round: the bottle was slammed down on the table with no glass. No napkins provided with food. Sound quality terrible for the musicians (they seem to have no sound engineer, although it's billed as a live music venue, and use blurry cheap speakers designed for outdoor events). A friend who is a professional sound engineer confirmed the bad sound quality. No manager in sight anywhere. The owners probably live somewhere else, out of town, and just treat this as a cash cow. (Is it a chain?) Their only interest must be to keep costs down so as to suck as much money out of their customers as possible, with minimum service. Don't go! And to local musicians: DON'T PLAY HERE. At least until the owners decide their customers are worth some courtesy and respect. Kill Devil is Corporate Posing As Cool. read more

Once I read all the other positive reviews it became clear to me that the people who wrote those reviews obviously work at the "Club" or are affiliated in some way. There were so many bad things about Kill Devil Club that I'm having trouble even gathering my thoughts to write this review. First, SLOW service. I found myself having to order 2 drinks at a time since it took the waitress about 1/2 hour between the time you ordered your drink and when you actually got it. Then, when you do get your drink, it's only about 1 oz of liquid poured over ice so it lasts about 5 sips and then you need another. Oh, and that 1 oz of liquid (of which only about .25oz is actually alcohol), will run you about $10 to $12, btw. Now, don't get me wrong, I expect to pay $10 or $12 (or even more) for a drink when I'm in South Beach or some areas of Chicago, but NOT in Kansas City. People who compared this place to Manifesto must have amnesia of some sort. Then there was the food: Poor quality and almost no quantity. The bruschetta was literally 5 little crackers with some tomatoes, olive oil, vinegar, and basil. Again, I don't mind laying down some money for some delicious, quality food, but paying $12 for 5 crackers is an insult. From the time we asked to close our tab to the time our last credit card was processed was about an hour, no less. I would be shocked if this place was in business for long. read more
