I absolutely love this place. You know it's good when the place is always crowded whenever we were there (which was almost everyday during our stay.) Their ice-cream custard is amazing. The beach fries and chili cheese fries are to die for also. The spices are located outside so you can choose any flavor and how much you want to put on your fries. I love that they have different flavor everyday. However, when you love one flavor and you can't have it the next day, it's very sad. The best custard out on the OBX! We come every time we visit and more than once usually!

We tried this for the first time last week, sampling both the food and the frozen custard. Both were fantastic! I got the BBQ chicken sandwich, which was really good, but the winner was the chicken breast sandwich with the special sauce. That was the bomb! The kids got the usual hot dog and grilled cheese, which must've been good because they ate all of it. Maybe they just wanted the custard real bad. Speaking of, we just shared a banana split, but the quality of custard was amazing! Very smooth with great flavor. This is a MUST in the OBX for the price alone! But the food doesn't disappoint either. It's also a great locale to just hang out outside and eat. We will be making regular stops here each time we are in the area from now on. read more

Love this spot! We hit it every year. My wife loves their Carolina Bbq w/slaw. I usually grab a burger. We share a bucket of fries as well. It comes in a little collector bucket. You place your order and pickup at the windows. There isn't any indoor seating so grab a picnic table quickly if you can. My only issue with today's visit was when I paid the kid at the window my total was $33.73 so I gave him $35.75. He counted and told me I gave him too much so he handed me back the $0.75. We stopped here for 3 custard desserts. Although our orders were taken efficiently and repeated back to us for confirmation, the pricing for add-ons was not clear. Our 3 Hurricane Cat 1 custards came to over $25 including a 20% tip. Then the service was very shoddy: when called to pick up our orders, only 2 were ready and rudely told to wait for the 3rd. When I pointed out that the cherry-on-top (an extra-charge item) was missing, staff fussed and finally grudgingly provided a cherry. Later we also realized that strawberry was missing in one, but by then it was not worth dealing with the unfriendly staff. The custard was almost drippy like thin milkshakes with not enough custard for balance with the toppings. I will try to highlight all of the good in this place, but I don't know if one review can hold it all. As so many others said- the custard is AMAZING. The take a lot of care in making it on the hour, and the flavors and toppings and types to choose from are enough to make anyone drool. I got the chocolate hurricane with cookie dough, and WOW. Just wow. The burgers that people at my table got were apparently the best burger they've had in years, and one of the best ever. My NC BBQ sandwich was great too. The slaw was sweet, just the way I like it, and the meat was cooked with such flavor. It was a little odd that they used Sweet Baby Rays for their bbq seeing as they make most other things from scratch, but it didn't hurt the flavor that's for sure. Kill desert custard is the place to be at! Very very busy here but they certainly keep the lines moving along! Like others mentioned, they offer more than just custard here but this is the reason mostly everyone comes here for! They only offer vanilla, chocolate and a flavor of the day and what they offer they do well. However since I have a place at home that makes homemade custard and offers at least 6 flavors daily, and tasty just as good I have to stick with the "hometeam" as my number 1 favorite. I had a classic sundae with vanilla, real whip creme and peanut butter sauce. It was all done very well and I enjoyed it. I have been dying to come here and finally went and it didn't disappoint I got the mint oreo custard and it was one of the specials for the day and it was delicious the line wasn't that long and we got our ice creams quickly. This place is cool. The Chili Dog is awesome! They use a quality wiener, then cook it perfectly. There's a nice pop when you bite it. But the best part is the chili, a proprietary concoction that is meaty with just the right spices. Don't miss out on this chili. The fries are the some if the best you'll find in a restaurant. They use skin on potatoes, hand cut them to a uniform thickness (around a quarter of an inch), and then fry them to deep golden brown perfection. On their menu they tell you that they are "lightly salted" and they keep their word. I would have preferred more salt. But then again, I eat too much salt. Fortunately, they are served so freshly out of the frier that I could add what I wanted. Bottom line, you can't beat fries from freshly cut potatoes. You have to finish with the Frozen Custard. If you have never tried Frozen Custard, do yourself a favor. You won't be sorry. It's richer, and more flavorful than most ice cream. If you've have had it elsewhere, trust me, this place is better than most. read more

Yes, the most simple sandwich to get right. Their version is a hamburger bun with the top inverted and maybe 2 slices of cheese. It was the absolute worst grilled cheese I have ever eaten. When we lived in OC, we frequented Kill Devil's Frozen Custard. I always wondered about the odd-sounding name of the place and found out that the only other location was in Kill Devil Hills, NC. Orange County and North Carolina, huh? Weird. The OC location has since closed and when I started researching for our trip to the Outer Banks, I saw the town of Kill Devil Hills on the map and immediately made a note that we had to find the original Kill Devil Frozen Custard in that town.
