We stayed here for a work trip since there wasn't much else around - it was a great recommendation! It was super easy to check in, our room was very clean and well taken care of. Modern but still captured the old coastal feel. It was super musty and smelled like it. There was a dehumidifier but it was so small, in two nights we actually had to dump the water bucket 4 times. And if we left all day, we came back to a damp room. I'm not sure what causes that - we live in a super humid area and don't have the same issue, but maybe a larger humidifier would help. The breakfasts were fantastic - you can order anything off their restaurant menu. I didn't have anything bad, everything was super fresh and came in huge portions. I do wish they had an espresso machine but the coffee was okay. Check out was also a breeze. This isn't a luxury location, my main complaint was the price for it feels steep, but it's one of the only spots in the area which is probably why they can charge so much. Overall, a great stay and I would definitely come back here if I was in the area again. read more

Made an unexpected stop for dinner and arrived at 5. We were the only customers at the time. We've eaten here often and usually enjoy it. Tonight was not one of our better experiences. My wife's house salad was very tasty but had several pieces of wilted greens that she picked out. I started with the French onion soup, which was very salty. Almost too salty to eat. My wife had the salmon and I had the Shrimp in the sambuca sauce. The salmon was cooked good and very flavorful, the asparagus was cooked perfectly and good tasting. The shrimp were cooked well but the dish itself was lacking flavor. I was surprised at the absence of the sauce. It barely covered the pasta. The waitress did offer to add more sauce to it, and actually brought out some more sauce with a little more sambuca in it. It did improve the dish,but not one of my favorites. So 5 stars on the salmon dish. 3 stars on the salad. 1 star on the French onion soup, and 3 stars on the shrimp sambuca sauce dish. I have had the French onion soup before and it was good, so this was just a bad night. We will still go there because they usually are very good, and everyone can have an off night. Dinner here tonight. Not real busy on a Thursday night. Drinks came out. Neither "dirty martini" was very good , Cosmopolitan was very mundane. Redid the martinis which were better. Clearing appetizer dishes resulted in spilled plates and salad dressing over one of our diners. Admittedly it's very cold, but that's not a reason for the food to be cold also. French onion soup had nice substance, but not warm enough to melt the cheese. Seafood platter- fish ( cod ?) was inedible. One diner ordered mixed vegetables for dinner and received something completely different. In summary not a very nice experience except for our dining companions read more

What a perfect spot for a romantic getaway or a leisurely weekend on the Northern Neck! My dear bride and I spent out 42nd wedding anniversary (I KNOW, can you imagine?) as guests in the Madison cottage. Such a warm and comfortable and private place to settle in for a few days. Great bed, great amenities, even a kitchy but cute electric "fireplace" to keep things warm. The restaurant was also a hit. Our room came with free breakfast, and it was very generous. Wife's Benedict was absolutely perfectly prepared, with great hollandaise. My spinach scramble was absolutely decadent, every bite had a tug of a cheese pull, and the bacon and onions that were intermixed were just the perfect pairing with the fresh spinach. The hotel is an excellent place for a special stay -- it isn't inexpensive. But it is worth it. And the meal we had has us planning a return trip, just to eat in the restaurant. 6 out of 5. read more

The restaurant is a lovely place. It has old decor filled with historical items from various presidents and parties. We were seated quickly as we had reservations. We could hardly understand the waitress due to her accent but we managed. Everyone ordered drinks and food without issue. We had to ask what the daily specials were as they weren't announced freely when the menus were handed out. The food came in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, my crab cakes and vegetables were not desirable. They tasted way off. Almost like they were spoiled or cooked in old fryer oil. I got through a third of one and had my wife try it. She agreed it was bad. The squash and zucchini were paper thin and barely had enough slices on the plate. For the $36 price, this was way overpriced for the meal. I didn't get potatoes but asked for double veggies. Obviously, that didn't happen either. I have been here several times before but only because we come from out of town to visit in-laws and this is literally the only option. If I have to go again, I'll only get an unsweetened tea as that was the only thing not wrong. The owner was kind in trying to explain to me how they make cakes compared to Maryland. We stay here every year for a summer getaway. It is a beautiful setup with the garden in the center. We've stayed in different rooms each time. The complimentary breakfast is always great. I Had a great time at the restaurant. The place is so cozy, so comfortable and beautiful. It has a lot of character. Loved the furniture and the seating booths were extremely comfortable. The food was amazing. We had blacked salmon and seared salmon. They were cooked to perfection and perfectly y seasoned. The bread basket was to die for! The mashed potatoes were perfect and the steamed vegetables were on point! The customer service was great and the owner was kind and very welcoming! I love the decor - a not to the political history of Virginia (7 Presidents come from VA). Its a really good menu with lots of great choices. The salads are huge, with the chicken for the Cobb salad cooked perfectly. The crab soup is perfect. A good vegetable base with lumb crab meat. The French dip sandwich is one of our favorites. My only beef is with the hollandaise sauce. Its not very good so when I order something with it, I asked them to hold it. I ordered the seafood platter. It was sooo good. Not just deep fried stuff we all regret from other places. My wife ordered chicken Fettuccine Alfredo that she loved. Both dishes were portioned well. Pretty unique, decorated spot. Americana decor mixed with antiques. Quite pricey which is expected at a B&B ($80 for 2 for brunch), was well worth it for a special occasion. The ham egg and cheese croissant was DELICIOUS, probably the best one I've ever had. As someone that doesn't often finish their plate, I left no crumbs behind. Their tea service was nice, even came with its own adorable personal jar of honey . The Bloody Mary will fool you, it was HUGE in a very wide glass to the point my date took the entire time drinking it and it barely budged. Came with its own mini Tabasco jar as well. My date loves his blue crab eggs Benedict . Worth stopping in to give it a try, we enjoyed the quirkiness of the patriotic names matching the decor. An owner? Stopped by to check on us as well which is always nice to see. We did feel a bit rushed with the waitress. Our stay at the Kilmarnock Inn proved to be very disappointing. We were greeted by the owner when we first arrived, and he was certainly friendly but did not give off great vibes. We were shown to our room and where to park but never asked if we need help with our luggage, something that I would have expected if the Kilmarnock was in fact an upscale Inn. The room really smelled; we were not sure what it was, but it was hard to get past the odor. The air conditioner was noisy, the bed somewhat uncomfortable, and no counterspace at all in the bathroom. The entire Inn just had a dingy and upkept feel to it. Our breakfast was good and was included in our room price. I would have been very disappointed if I paid the $50.00 + price that was on the guest check we were presented. The waitress was very friendly and checked in with us often but the freshly laundered tee shirt with an ammunition logo on it was a bit of a turnoff. I would have expected the staff to wear uniforms or at least polo shirts with the Inn's name on it. The Inn was not serving dinner when we visited which was probably a blessing in surprise. I rarely write lukewarm reviews but feel it necessary to warn others that our experience did not come close to our expectations or other reviews. read more

Stayed for two nights in the Madison "cabin" and ate three meals at the hotel restaurant. Breakfast was included with the room and the first day's breakfast was pretty standard and got the job done but on the second day I had the best meal of the trip with the croissant french toast and bacon. Was not sure exactly what to expect but it was tasty and the syrup dispenser was a design I've never seen in my nearly 60 years - it poured from the bottom and sat in a container of hot water. Very unique and seemed to work well though our waiter said it could cause a mess for the uninitiated. Loved the inside dining area. We sat in the window nooks for breakfast and sat outside for lunch one day. One of their specialties is little scones served at breakfast. My partner is British with years of scone experience but she did not recognize what arrived at the table. I thought they seemed more like small cookies. They were tasty but not what we would consider a scone. We arrived an hour before official check in and were shown to our cabin. The hotel staff was friendly and professional. We enjoyed the in room jacuzzi and really enjoyed sitting on the front porch to read. Room was nice though I could do without the fake fireplace. AC worked well and the room had an additional dehumidifier that worked though it was a bit loud. WiFi in the main part of the hotel was good but got pretty sketchy further back to almost being unusable at times. AT&T cell coverage was almost non-existent right around our room but was better walking around the town. We checked out a different room on the way out so overall we had a positive experience and looking forward to returning. There are cheaper places to stay for sure but we loved the location and being able to walk around the town. Recommendations: Get rid of the fake fireplaces in the rooms. Get a WiFi certified engineer to upgrade the network for the property. read more

This is the coolest spot ever!!! My eyes were so busy taking in the sweet decor surrounding me. Oh, and the food was fabulous! My husband and I both chose the Eggs Benedict topped with lump crabmeat! A side of red potatoes diced in sweet red peppers mixed and grilled to perfection! A side of fresh berries and a sweet scone served with coffee. I could have stayed in our cozy corner nook, all morning! The entire place here is so comfortable and romantic inside. Want a more casual setting? Could not have had a better time! The ladies who checked us in, waited tables and cleaned our room were so friendly and welcoming. The inn's courtyard was delightful, our room clean and spacious. We enjoyed our dinners--scallops and roast vegetables were perfect, followed by homemade ice cream. Breakfast came with our stay-- huge selection, made to order. The Killmarnock Inn is a lovely scene for dining. A bed a breakfast set in a historical home, the feeling on arrival is cozy and welcoming. Thr brunch menu is full of a variety of choices including meal entrees as well as breakfast selections. The service was attentive and terrific. The chef even came to greet us. Party of 9 on Christmas eve morning. CRAB CAKE BENEDICT A traditional benedict with crab cakes heaped alongside a traditional eggs benedict. Great presentation. Crab was delicious and did not contain fillers. Seasoning was great. Recommend. SHRIMP AND GRITS The Grits were perfectly cooked. This term for generous and large-sized. They were shell off but tails on. Would recommend. GOVERNORS OMLET A tasty omlet with vegetables, ham, cheese. Simple and delightful! CROQUE MADAME I ordered the dish without muenster cheese and with fruit instead of potatoes. The sandwich was tasty though a rather on the small side. The fruit was fresh and good. Disappointing. Supposedly upscale B&B, we stopped in for coffee/dessert after dinner. Wretched service -- astonishing delays getting waited on, taking order, delivering order, processing check. How hard can it be delivering and charging or two coffees and a slice of carrot cake? Maybe staying guests get better treatment. read more

I have not eaten there in quite awhile . It was my dads favorite place for Sunday brunch ( which used to require a reservation ). The atmosphere is quietly regal, comfortable seating, quiet . Beautiful restrooms . The bacon was the best I have ever tasted in my life ! I was not able to pry loose the recipe ( trade secret apparently ). Dad always like the little glass of pear port served for dessert. It was a mixture of traditional brunch foods with dinner items . As much as you can eat. After dad died, I returned with a small group who had come from his funeral. He was remembered by the staff and I was given a bottle of that pear port. It touched me ! Great service! 5 years later: went back for the first time . The breakfast buffet is no longer served. But the menu is more than adequate and the food delicious. The service was excellent as always. A very unique restaurant. Really a 3 1/2 stars. The rooms and menu or based around the presidency. They have a number of different rooms for presidents, and some commemorative White House plates on the wall. A White House rug greets you as you come in the front door. It is a more on the higher end pricing for the area. It does have a good sized entree menu. I started off with the crab soup, A tomato-based broth with vegetables, similar to minestrone, with a large helping of lump back crab meat. Then for my entrée I got crab cakes with risotto and roasted carrots. My wife and pop got rock fish with crab cake on polenta. The entree reads crab stuffed rockfish, but it is a rockfish fillet placed on a crab cake. My mom got the scallops. The food was good but did not blow my doors off. Our server was very sweet, but I was put off by their t shirt for a uniform. read more

We reserved their Honeymoon Suite over a week ago...but no one thought to tell us this wasn't a non-smoking room. We open the door walked in to the room and it REEKED of cigar smoke. So, for $260 a night, you can spend the night in a smoker's bedroom. Why they didn't tell me this was a smoking room when I rented it is beside me. I would have changed rooms but we drove over an hour and a half to get here and I'd already put my bags in the room. Total disappointment - this is the 3rd time I've stayed here and it's miserable. I won't be coming back and I would NOT advise anyone else to stay here. If you do, make sure and get them to commit to a smoke free room. If you're a smoker, this place is made for you; The Kilmarnock Inn is a smoker's paradise. read more

Wonderful, romantic, quaint inn in Kilmarnock, VA! The BF took me here for Valentine's Day weekend and we had the most delightful weekend. The owner of the inn is charming and his manager is very attentive and accommodating. The inn is made up of 7 guest houses (we stayed in the Harrison) that all represent the homes of the 7 presidents from Virginia. It was beautiful and classic and very well kept! Two of the rooms are pet friendly! (We were able to bring Louie, our Boxer, with us.) Kilmarnock is located on the West coast of the Chesapeake Bay and we visited several beautiful parks on the water plus several local wineries. The wine wasn't so exciting but it was fun to visit the beautiful vineyards. Kilmarnock is a quaint little town with a couple of VERY good restaurants. MEN- listen up. This is a wonderful place to take your sweet love. My BF earned major brownie points by planning this weekend. I was very impressed. read more

I am so disappointed in this establishment and management. Both my husband and I called 8 weeks and then again 4 weeks ago when trying to make reservations for brunch for my mother who lives there in town. We, on the other hand, live 3 1/2 hours away. We were both told that they were not taking reservations at the moment and would call us back if they changed their minds. They did tell both of us on the two separate occasions that if we arrived when they opened at 8:00 we shouldn't have a problem. We did just that and when we arrived we were asked if we were staying at the Inn and we said no we were there for the brunch. We were then told they were full and if we didn't have a reservation we would not be able to dine with them. Let me first say that we were the only people in the restaurant and when we tried explaining what we had been told on two different occasions we were still told we had to have reservations. read more
