I wanted a new pair of running shoes and a Nike+ sensor, so after reading all the great reviews of this store, I figured I would "shop local" instead of going to Dick's or Sports Authority. I really wanted to spend my money at an independent shop. I run about 30 miles a week so it would be great to have such a store near by. I came from Florida where I had an awesome local running store that carried ALL the major running brands and a variety of clothing and accessories. I am sorry to say, I was very disappointed! They had like 6 (maybe) different shoes in the store and some clothes (hardly any!) that looked like they survived from the eighties. It was also quite dirty and just seemed to be in disarray. How can a dedicated "running" store sell such a limited brand of shoes? I'm no orthopedist but, to me, there are many different factors that go in to picking the right shoe such as height, weight, sex, body type, pronation, foot problems, health problems, etc., etc........ AND 1 or 2 brands, at most!, fit all---I think not! That would be the reason that there are so many different types or styles out there. Also, to me, the only reason to carry a severely limited selection would be that the owner is getting much more than the normal profit............in addition, the brand they carry is a higher price than other shoes out there too. I asked if they had the Nike running sensor (which has been out for years) and told they don't carry Nike......really! I know Nike products aren't for everyone, especially the shoes BUT to carry nothing Nike! Nike makes great, cute running outfits, socks, accessories, etc. and for a running store to carry nothing Nike...?! Really! Truthfully, it didn't seem like they carried any running items (made in this century). I've always been interested in running but never really got around to it, I've was unsure of myself and as silly as it sounds didn't really know where to start. A few weeks ago inspired by a friend of mine who has become a serious runner over the last year I decided to just go for it. I quickly discovered how much I actually enjoy running but could tell from the get go that the shoes I was wearing were all wrong for what I was trying to do. I knew from a friend of mine whose marathon training was sidelined for several weeks because of peroneal tendonitis due to improper shoes how important it was to invest in my footwear. I was painfully aware that I knew absolutely nothing about running shoes so going to Dick's or Sport Authority wasn't going to cut it for me. The staff just isn't knowledgeable enough for my comfort level. I asked my personal trainer where she recommended I go and Kilometers was where she sent me. It was exactly the experience I was hoping for. Mark could not have been more friendly or supportive and immediately made me feel at ease. He looked at my feet, watched me walk and used a mat connected to a computer system to see what kind of feet we were dealing with. Once he had all the information he presented me with a pair of shoes, showed me a better way to lace them and then sent me outside to run in the parking lot. I felt like I was running on clouds. There was absolutely no trace of the horrible ache I experience in my old shoes and I felt like I could actually pick up my feet and go faster. The experience with the right shoe is night and day from what I have been dealing with. Mark told me if there was anything about the shoes I didn't like I could come back and we would work on it. He also encouraged me to sign up for my first race and invited me to come running on Friday nights. After about 5 years away from running (mostly because of knee pain), I decided to invest in a new pair of running shoes so I started reading reviews for specialty running stores. I decided on Kilometers based on the strength of the reviews and the enthusiasm of its customers and am incredibly glad that I did! Marc put me through my paces, checking my foot size/arch in a variety of different ways, and then had me test the shoes out with a couple of short jogs. The shoes that he recommended were so different than the recommendations I'd gotten at other specialty stores - I was intrigued and a little apprehensive, but was told that if it wasn't feeling right after a few runs to come back and we'd figure it out. His customer service is excellent, so much that a friend that was just along for the ride ended up buying a pair of shoes as well (different than mine) ... talk about an impulse buy! I've told so many friends about this store, and have brought several in to try the shoes out and they've also come away with great experiences. *Confession* ... I've actually brought my friends to Kilometers from Poughkeepsie each time, just because I wanted to be there to learn more from Marc, who is a wealth of knowledge and incredibly supportive. I just can't get enough! One year later, I still LOVE my On's and I absolutely love bringing people in to meet Marc and get fitted for shoes. I've tried another local running store down the road a few times (hoping to have a good experience) but time and time again I leave other stores disappointed. The owner could not be more real. I have been to every store within 30 miles to buy running shoes but I would only go here now. Other places sell what they carry with no real effort to understand my specific needs. What is worse, is that now, so many shoes with famous brand names are all made with sub standard materials. (And in the same place,, do some research). Years ago I could go six months to a year on a pair, recently my shoes were lasting three months! Mark is honest and goes out of his way to be the first to have researched high quality shoes that LAST! Even if that means he can't sell me as often as the other stores. He also took the time to correct my form and work with me on Chi Running so now I can feel ache and pain free, completely!! One word AMAZING!!! Just bought my 4th pair of running sneakers from kilometers. I've be coming here for 3 years.The service is next to none! They analyze your specific foot type and match you to a shoe for your foot structure. The guy who I've dealt with every time (sorry forgot his name!) has an outstanding memory! Every time I come he remembers my foot type and what shoe he put me in last time. He gives great running tips and is so nice!! Genuinely cares about his customers!! WOW, I have never been so impressed! I felt the need to start running to help alleviate all my physical ailments, ( I've passed that 50 age milestone) Went into KILOMETERS after visiting all the usual athletic stores. NONE of the sales people could give me any intelligent info.... They all tried to recommend the the typical brands with no real knowledge. Upon entering this shop, Mark started chatting me up and after 5 minutes saw all of my physical ,anatomical problems, better than any doctor I've been too. Even suggested simple exercises to alleviate my problem. ( He was accurate on all counts, no need now for surgery!) The first shoe he showed me had ALL the attributes I was looking for in the big -box stores, but could not find. Light weight, flexible, attractive, (made my feet even LOOK smaller) super supportive. He had me wear them outside and watched my stride, gave some suggestions and for the first time, with his suggestions and advice, my stride wad smooth and light. I have Peripheral Neuropathy and rheumatoid arthritis,but felt great! I'm hooked on this man and his shop. I travel internationally and will ALWAYS contact this man for more shoes. It's rare for me to write a review but since I was terribly misguided and exploited by them this is my chance for justice. I have purchased running shoes three times there and will not be back. These are my experiences. First time I got the usual song and dance attempting to demonstrate that they customized the selection for my body and running style. I run up to 35 miles per week, have done a dozen half marathons and my first full marathon this past year. I walked away from the store feeling reasonable about the experience but couldn't help notice that they only had about three or four different running shoes from which to choose. Are there really only 4 different combinations of body habitus and running styles? I thought I was being played but was OK with it at that point. After getting home, I discovered that my two boys who had been to the store on separate occasions and are very different people in terms of height, weight, body composition, foot arch, etc were put into the exact shoe that I was! Three very different people all with the same recommendation based of Kilometer's " assessment:. The second time, without being assessed, I was sold a bill of goods on why I should use On's Cloud Runners. It seemed strange that it was about the only shoe they carried and were charily putting other customers at the time in the same shoe. Their logic sounded reasonable and so I decided to give it a try, despite the shoe costing 30 dollars more than my last pair; I was told that they lasted longer. Well, after running about 300 miles I finally developed my first case of overuse syndrome, patella-femoral syndrome. I hadn't significantly increased my weekly mileage but did get into the poor habit of not stretching nor varying my running routine enough. I attributed my injury to those issues and completely spaced on the change in running shoes used until reminded by some running friends after my third purchase at Kilometers. By the way, I never was injured during my entire marathon training nor after the race in my prior conventional running shoes. It only occurred when switching shoes. That stuff happens but then there was the third purchase. I've been in physical therapy for over a month, trying to get back into the game, using the elliptical machine frequently and decided to get a new pair of shoes to help my recovery and to get back out there. I explained to the owner, Mark, the nature of my injury, how I recently was recommend by them to On's cloud runners and was very frustrated by my inability to run at the present. He did the same BS assessment, had me run back and forth in the parking to look at my stride and then recommended that I wear the "new" Cloud Runner's on the market. Stupid me swallowed it and purchased them! Every time I ran in them, my injury flared. I finally caught up with a group of running friends, one of whom had the exact same experience (sans injury). She stated that she and her daughter were each recommended Cloud Runners by this store, both sustained knee injuries and were fairly certain that the owner was financially incentivized to push this product. The following day, I went to a different running outfitter in the general area. They had a huge assortment of running shoes but no On's and described how the On shoes were approaching a minimalist shoe with little cushion or support. The salesmen there also directed my to the mid-level shoe as opposed to the high-end and more expensive variety. I will never go back to Kilometers after these experiences. The owner appears nice enough but certainly is interested only in pushing what works for him, not the runner. It's really ashame but buyer beware! read more
