Stopped here last night on a motorcycle ride cuz I'd heard nothing but good things about the place. I was SORELY disappointed! First, the place is cash only...had to find an ATM nearby before we could even order. We couldn't order at the counter ourselves, and had to wait for a one of the car hop girls to take our order. It was busy, so we expected to wait a bit. Ordered a cheeseburger with ketchup, brat, 2 orders of fries, a vanilla shake and a chocolate shake. Food shows up after 15 minutes, and the bill is just over $28. They forgot the brat, the burger was only as thick as the slice of unmelted cheese on it, and was drenched in ketchup...slid apart as soon as I picked it up. Fries were okay, shakes were pretty good. All said and done, nothing to get excited about. We'll probably never be back. Overpriced, not great food. Save your money and go someplace else. read more

I think the vanilla frozen custard is some of the best I've ever had. It tastes like they use vanilla bean instead of just vanilla. It was thick and creamy (and dreamy)! My flurry was huuuuge--just how I like it. The deluxe sundaes were extremely large, and absolutely picture perfect. We stopped in about 20 minutes to close and they were happy to serve us still. (Given, we were only looking for custard and not a full meal.) The service was fast and friendly. They did turn the lights off about 10 minutes after close. The place itself is super cute. We are from out of town. Nice drive-up atmosphere but there was a parking hazard our car hit when pulling in a spot. It was a low pipe marked with a teeny tiny orange cone. Totally bummed me out. Desserts, yes. Burgers, no. Hands down the worst burger we have ever had. An oversized, greasy, off tasting, gray patty. Grilled onions tasted like French onion soup mix. **Cash Only** Kitlie has really stepped up their game the last couple of years! They have upgraded their menu and I am a huge fan of the new items. Lets start off that it is an old school drive in. A perfect place to bring your family, friends, and even go out on a date to. I love the concept and the fact that the tray sits on your window. Yall, ever since I tried the chicken dinner I have yet to go back to a burger or hot dog. The burgers are typical but the specialty dogs can be hit or a miss with the bun getting soggy. BUT the fried chicken is honestly one of the best I have had, what a statement. The skin is so darn crispy it is unbelievable. Even when the chicken cools, the skin stays crispy. It really is magic. Seasoned delicious magic. (pro tip! Get a side of cheese for your fries ;) Since the chicken dinner was so good, I had to try the chicken wings and the chicken wings come to a close second. You have the option of mild or hot and the sauce is incorporated with the breading topped with more seasoning. This is not a saucy wing and I would not consider the hot to be spicy at all. Do not skip out on the chicken here. As for everything else, I recommend the onion rings, mozz sticks (wonton wrapped!), jalapeno poppers, mini corn dogs, and all their custard. My personal favorite is a vanilla malt with extra malt because it is the right slurpable consistency. My one complaint about Kiltie is that when it is packed and you are parked 3 cars deep, it is impossible to see the menu without stepping out of your car and they do not provide any paper menus. If you happen to be in Oconomowoc you must stop at Kiltie's for a treat!! My GPS did not work exactly right, but Kiltie's is located on a kind of frontage road, adjacent to the highway. Not much has changed at the Kiltie as far as signage, menu and car-hop service....awesome!! If it ain't broke don't fix it! The server showed up fairly quickly and gave us just enough time to peruse the menu and decide on our food. And guess what the server was wearing...a KILT. So appropriate. We enjoyed our food which consisted of a ham and cheese sandwich, and hot dog and fries. We were in a rush so we'll have to check out the ice cream next time. The fries were our favorite dish. Kiltie was packed when we pulled in on a Tuesday night, but the service was still prompt in spite of that. The food was delicious (if the burgers were a tad plain the flavorful sides of onion rings and mozzarella sticks more than made up for it). You can eat at the outdoor picnic tables or in your car like an old fashioned drive in. The ambience was friendly and fun, with lots of families when we stopped in. The only thing that stopped me from giving it a full five stars is they made one of our burgers wrong, and the prices were a bit high for what we got. Be aware that they only accept cash as payment. UNBELIEVABLE...in the absolute best of ways. Hands down the best custard I have had ever and that is saying a lot considering I live in America's Dairyland. The Mint Mello Sundae is divine. The custard is thick, cold, and fresh. I requested extra cherries and was provided with at least 6 or 7 on my sundae. I wanted to turn around and experience the place all over again minutes after pulling out of the parking lot (ha!) Besides knocking it out of the park on the custard front, the food wasn't half bad either. We had a ham and cheese sandwich, fries, and onion rings. The onion rings were a great choice - crunchy, not too salty, and not too greasy. The rings were also served piping hot (thank you!) The drive-in, 1950's retro vibe is a nice break from the norm and provides for a memorable experience for all ages. Staff was hustling and super friendly and accommodating. We did not have to wait long for food or ice cream. The place is cash only and we did have a car pull up behind us which freaked us out, but it wasn't an issue at all (i.e., we didn't get stuck in a jam unable to leave). Well it seems it's finally happened. The end of an era. The Turtle Sundae was always the main reason I went to the Kiltie. A creamy delicious milk chocolate and caramel treat with the Kiltie soft serve custard. I ordered my favorite treat a couple nights ago and despite watching the price increase about $5 since my first turtle back in the late 70's it is clear that the skimp on ingredients has hit here too. I haven't been to a true drive-in with car hops since I was a kid. The Kiltie didn't top my childhood memories of Pinocchio's in Racine, but I did quite enjoy our stop. My boyfriend and I ordered a cheeseburger, a double cheeseburger, fries, cheese fries, a Coke, and a root beer. The burger patties are super thin and served on a soft sesame seed bun. Good flavor, cooked all the way through (which is how I like it), and delicious with pickles, mustard, and ketchup. The fries had some interesting seasoning on it and their crisp, crinkle-cut goodness didn't need the help of ketchup. I tried some of the cheese sauce from my boyfriend's order and while it's certainly out of a can, it did hit the spot. Their root beer was on the more herbal side and tasted like it was made with real sugar. The pebble ice kept my drink cold through the drive back to Madison. After finishing our meals we decided to split a small cup of twist custard - I loved that it was made soft-serve style. The custard was thick and delicious and I look forward to trying some of their sundae offerings if we find ourselves out that way again. The bill with tax and tip was about $28 - a little on the high end but the food was tasty and the experience was fun so it was worth it for a splurge. Do note that it's cash only and there didn't appear to be an ATM on site. If you, like me, pull up and realize you don't have enough cash in your wallet, hang a right out of the parking lot and go past the car lots toward the highway - you'll find a Pick 'n Save on your left. I also didn't spot an ATM there, but I grabbed a pack of gum in the self checkouts and was able to get cash back with my purchase that would have been less than a service fee. read more
