Man, that was awesome! I stopped by this Kopp's for something sweet and cold and left as a happy camper. I was impressed with not only with what I ate but also by what I saw. In front is a sunken tree garden that must be a neat place to enjoy your food when the weather is nice. It's very shaded and has nice benches and a relaxing vibe to it. It's also the only place that I saw to sit down and enjoy your food. Inside the building is quite large but only has about 4 tables to stand next to without any seats. I think most people either go eat the food in their car or take it home. I ordered 2 scoops of their frozen soft serve custard. The flavored scoops were vanilla and turtle pecan. It cost $5 and change which was a real value too. I stood in a short line and had my dessert in less than 5 minutes. They have several lines to stand in to serve the many customers who come here. The vanilla scoop was rich and delicious. The turtle pecan scoop rocked my world! It had many half pecans in it and the custard was perfect in a buttery like taste that made me what to order another serving but in the interest of my waistline I decided not to. This custard impressed me. They also serve burgers, hot dogs, etc. too and I am sure it's all good here. This is a big operation that serves many people. I counted somewhere between 15-20 people working there all dressed in their white uniforms behind the counter. I wish we had a Kopp's where I live! read more

I would habe given 5 stars if it were for custards only, but burger and fries were quite poor. Reading thru a lot of old and new reviews, both from Yelp and internet in general, I got the sense that burgers used to be a lot better in the old days. Having tried them for the first time, I have to say, I can completely understand why they would say that, even without prior knowledge. I could definitely see the potential from the first bite of the burger. Patties were cooked right and gave me pleasant feeling of decent bite, except for being a bit bland. Buns definitely did not add anything to the totality of the burger, staying consistent with what everyone says. Made me wonder what kind of buns they used to use that made it better. Did not care for the soggy, green leafy part of lettuce they shoved into it. Like a normal person, I prefer a bit of crunch in my burger lettuce, but it did nothing but take away from the experience. I was sold on the idea of fried onions, but my onions didn't look or feel fried. Maybe my expectations were different on what fried onions meant? I was imagining deep fried battered onions, but maybe what I got was non-battered fried onions. Either way, it didn't leave any impression. I think I also made the mistake of asking for ketchup and mustard without specifically asking just how much. My burger ended up being too sour due to too much of both. I think I read on their website somewhere that I was supposed to be able to taste the specialness of their Wisconsin cheese, but everything else about the burger was so overpowering that I barely could tell if there was any cheese at all. Fries were SUPER soggy from the get go. I *only* brought the bad outside to open it immediately after grabbing them, so it wasn't like they stayed in the bag long enough to get soggy. Now.. having said all that. Custards were amazing! Definitely at the top of my list of frozen custards I've had thus far. The girl at the counter had me try both the daily specials and both were super good. So good that I'll probably drive my girls an hour out here just to buy them custards, especially as it gets warmer. If it were just for burgers and fries, I might have given them two stars. But since the name of the institution is Kopp's Frozen Custard, I'm more inclined to be a bit forgiving.. Inside an industrial like park off the highway is a futuristically built frozen custard and burger joint. So bizarre, but in Wisconsin where people still make things, this makes sense. This is a must stop, they have a few within the greater Milwaukee area. But this location is cool. The have burgers, soda, and custard. I got the Mr. Fudgies mint custard, it has fudgie sauce, mint flavors, and it was so creamy and thick. Definitely a great choice. It also comes with a waffle slice. My partner got a peanut butter sundae which came in a huge tub, full of hardened chocolate sauces and a crunchy peanut butter sauce. He loved it. I came back in February to meet Hugh Jackman, but never got to try the food, so I came back. The shake was delicious, it was thick and sweet. I did enjoy the onion rings and fries I got to try on the side, especially the onion rings they were really crispy. The burger however, started off good but tell me why on a day that wasn't busy I was one of the first people in line, and I got my burger like this? It looked like what a whopper used to be which is great, the beef itself tasted really good. But the cheese wasn't even melted, they gave me a WHOLE onion in the burger, there's already grilled onions on it, a couple raw ones are fine but not in its entirety. I also don't know why a pickle was on top of my bun. It felt sloppily put together. For a place that has 11k reviews and almost 5 stars I gotta say it was a let down for me. read more

I'm not a native Milwaukeean, but I've lived in the area long enough to understand how popular Kopp's is with many people. Even though it's not necessarily my favorite, once in a while a custard flavor of the day will be intriguing enough where I feel like I have to stop in to try it. On this particular visit that flavor was German apple strudel. In addition to two scoops in a waffle cone, I got a plain double cheeseburger. The double cheeseburger is huge, it's got a lot of cheese on it, and I'm fairly certain it's cooked to order, all of which are great points. My problems with it are twofold. First, I ordered the burger plain, so not only do I not want pickle on my sandwich at all, I especially don't want it on top of the bun seeping pickle flavor into it. Second, I feel like the top part of the bun flakes apart pretty easily, making a mess of it. Overall it's a fine burger, but not worth the hype it gets. The custard was very good. I loved the bits of apple in the custard and the two scoops were humongous. The "strudel" was more like hard cookie chunks than what I think of as strudel. It wasn't my favorite flavor of the day that I've had from Kopp's, but it was easily the better of the two items I got. read more

Kopp's Frozen Custard is one of my favorite places, and I stop by a couple of times every month. The food is consistently great, and the frozen custard is even better. While the burgers are a great choice, my personal favorite is the grilled cheese. I also love taking home a quart or half-gallon of custard every few weeks--it keeps well in the freezer and is perfect to enjoy later. One thing to know before you go is that there isn't any indoor seating. Since it's more of a grab-and-go spot, the waiting area can get pretty crowded, especially during the colder months. We came over at around 12 pm on a Friday and the first thing we saw was the giant list of 100 reasons to buy a kopp's gift card. It was so funny looking at all the different reasons from To Offer a Bribe to Sorry the Market Dropped. We ordered on the custard side where the other was burgers and fries. They have 2 special flavors of the day and the standard vanilla and chocolate to choose from. Frozen Custard 4 Scoops - They filled it to the brim stacking each flavor on each other. Every layer of custard was so creamy and smooth. The mint chocolate chip was what I wanted the most, the mint flavor was strong and it was generous with chocolate chips. The standard flavors were also really good with the rich chocolate and light vanilla. The biscuit on top was nice to scoop with, soft and lightly crunchy. We shared this between 4 people and it was so filling from the rich creaminess of their custard. Made an online order. Was shorted a fry and an onion ring. Called and they gave me a credit. That's fine. The real issue is whoever is working the fry station needs additional training. Lately the fries are terrible and just mush. Barely cooked. WTH? They never used to be that way. The burgers have also gone down hill for sure. For the cost increases Kopps has passed on to the customer, defiantly lacking on the quality they used to have. Cant say id recommend it to out of towners food wise. Best frozen custard I've ever had! I had their black raspberry and chocolate in a waffle cone. Paid around $5.50 and got a ginormous portion. (I'm not from WI) Super silky smooth. Just the right amount of sweetness and the black raspberry had bits of the real fruit. My friend who frequents here also mentioned that their other flavors of the day like birthday cake would have pieces of actual cake in it. They also serve burgers and other typical American fast food but I have tried so can't comment. Kopp's is one of those special places that defines a city and while I'm sure families have traveled there for decades, Kopp's was a new find for me as I rarely travel to Milwaukee for business but this is now a must visit when I'm in town. Not only do they serve some of the best custard I've ever had nationally, but their burgers are also something to reckon with and the only issue is whether you can save room for the custard after having this larger than life burger. Maybe start with the custard first? No shame or judgment if you eat dessert first but both are highly recommended, no matter the order. If you look at the website online, you can see their monthly calendar of rotating selections along with constant standards (i.e. vanilla, chocolate, etc.). For me, it's always the luck of the draw for when I'm lucky enough to be able to visit but ohhh...to be able to be the master of my own fate and plan for the flavors you crave!! The burgers were juicy, the onion rings were crispy, and the service was fast and friendly, even while they were busy. I remember coming here as a kid and I'm so happy that nothing has changed. They have separate counters: one to order burgers and another for custard. Once your order is ready, they'll announce your number over the loud speakers. I had gotten a burger, fries, and custard. They have some of the largest burgers I've seen in a long time. Each bite was perfectly balanced with meat, cheese, pickle, ketchup, and part of the toasty bun. This was the definition of a perfect burger. I didn't feel it was too greasy but I know the fried onions add a bit more grease to it. But the star of the show was certainly their custard. It's so creamy and the perfect sweet treat. Was visiting Milwaukee for a wedding and was recommended Kopp's for their burgers and frozen custard. I liked it so much that I went twice during my three-day trip! First time I got their custards in a cone. They change up their menu on a daily basis so be ready to be surprised. They have their monthly menu in a booklet in case you want to plan ahead, but I don't think you can go wrong with any flavor. I had some raspberry combination and a caramel combination. Both were amazing. During my second visit I tried their burgers, fries, onion rings, and more custards. Their burgers were relatively much bigger than what im used to. Their patties were nice and thick, unlike my beloved In n Out's. I got their double double and really enjoyed it. Fries were ok, onion rings were nice and crispy. Custard's flavors of the day were great as well (their mango combination was my favorite) They have plenty of parking available. No tables to eat at, so a lot of people eat on the outside area on the benches. The only bad thing was that I found a hair in my custard during my first visit. They exchanged it to me for a new one. Something about this place feels nostalgic! It may be the uniforms the workers were wearing.. or the look of the silver building. Whatever it was, I love it! There are multiple lines to lessen traffic- 2 for custard and drinks and 2 for food etc. Once your order if ready, they call your number/name out. It's not ice cream, it's frozen custard. It's something new I've discovered that is apparently a Wisconsin staple. They even sell half gallon size! We got the flavors of the day, key lime pie and turtle. Can't go wrong with any flavor. The turtle flavor is so yummy though. Wish I stayed a few more days to try the cookie dough flavor that was forecasted for friday that week! We also got the burger, fries, and coke. Burger is huge and came with nothing on it, unless requested. We like our burger with just cheese so it was perfect. Bread so soft and burger juicy. Even the fries are very yummy. First time at Kopp's. Ordered a double cheeseburger, fries and a medium Diet Coke. I have now decided that Kopps cheese burger is better than Whattabuger and In and Out. They make a great burger. The fries were just ok nothing special about the fries. The medium Diet Coke I thought was small, size versus the medium size i was expecting.. Overall a good experience. Next time I will just order a burger. Really no place to sit so we ate our meals in the car. Overall a good experience. I would have rated them a 5 star just for the burger. 4.5 Stars. Kopps was my second stop on my WI custard tour. I went with a Turtle Sundae (They only have one size, it was like $10.00, but it WAS big). This place was hectic! Super packed with people waiting for their food and eating their custard. How was it? Turtle Sundae- This Turtle Sundae was about twice the size of the one I had at Gilles. Same ingredients, vanilla custard, caramel sauce, hot fudge, pecans and topped with a cherry. This sundae was a little too big for its britches. I wish they offered a smaller size. By the time you got to the middle of the sundae, the caramel and hot fudge had hardened, and it was harder and messier to eat. Still delicious, but it took some effort to get through. I noticed that the pecans here were not as salty at the ones at Gilles. Once again, still delicious and good, just not upper echelon like Gilles. Super glad I stopped by and would definitely come back if I lived in the Milwaukee area. Their food looked tasty, too! read more

I have no idea how this Kopps location has such a high rating. I have been here three times in the past year and all three times were terrible. To start, their fries are awful! They are soggy and way undercooked. I have to throw them in the toaster oven when I get home. Their grilled cheese sandwiches always have way too much cheese and are greasy. (I totally understand that they are grilled cheese sandwiches and I'm complaining about too much cheese, but it just oozes out.) I know it's Kopps and it is always busy, but this one is so slow. Kopp's is such a classic! I had never been to the Greenfield location before, but the building is so unique and cool. After a little research, I discovered it's designed in a modernist style--now I'm curious to dig more into its history. This location was busy, but what else would you expect from Kopp's? Everyone was there to get their fix, just like me. One thing I love about Kopp's is their flavor forecast menu, which changes daily. While my favorite flavor is tiramisu, it wasn't available this time, so I went with vanilla custard topped with bananas and cherry sauce. It was delicious! Feel free to steal my order--you won't regret it. (Pro tip: sometimes I switch the cherry sauce for strawberry sauce, and it's equally amazing!) The only tricky part was ordering. There are two separate counter areas with ordering stations, but the lines weren't super clear. Thankfully, everything turned out fine, and we all got our orders correct. We felt like a local, going to this burger and custard shop. We didn't know the system so everyone knew we were tourists though. No worries, we caught on quick. It was strangely busy for such a late night on a weekday. But we quickly came to understand that this wasn't just about good burgers and ice cream, this was a local hang out spot replete with folks lounging inside and out (though it was cold) and friends meeting up either coming from somewhere or going somewhere else... We kinda liked that. And in any case the burger we had was quite good. Messy. Super messy for sure. But also super good. And because the name of the place says custard we went back for that too (we had to go back because apparently you have to get in a separate line for that, etc... it's a whole thing).
