This was a place that I was gonna visit on our trip to Wisconsin one way or the other but because it's not quite centrally located downtown, it would have to be a little bit of a finagling fortunately, it was basically right on the way to Madison so with a quick stop at around 11 AM we pulled over for some custard. GF didn't even want to get out of CAR. Can you believe it? If she had then I might've had some assistance and what kind of custard to get but I panicked and felt went out. You can't go wrong with the original so I just went with original vanilla but there was something else that intrigued me and now I will never know. We've gotten burgers at Kopp's so many times over the last 10 years, and they've always been so good and juicy and fresh-tasting....until the last three to four months. I picked up hamburgers with fried onions and ketchup for our dinner last night, but we were disappointed once again. The burgers were dry, thin, and burned around the edges. This is the third time in a row now; don't know if burgers are premade and thrown back on the grill to reheat, or has the quality of the meat been downgraded, or whatever, but very disappointing. I couldn't love this place more. I've been coming here since I was a little kid, and every bite reminds me of my childhood. Their burgers are delicious. Shakes are wildly good. I definitely noticed the change in the burger blend, they're still very tasty and worth stopping for. This visit I had a cheeseburger and onion rings. The onion rings were crispy, hot, and delicious. The burger had great flavor, although the lettuce was a little soggy and the tomatoes didn't seem as fresh as they could have been. I like the amount of seating- including that they offer multiple tables and benches outside, I prefer this bathroom over the one in Glendale because it's less sketchy, and it just seemed really organized inside with the line. When in Wisconsin......you have to get some frozen custard! Kppp's has been around since 1950, so they must be doing something right. We visited on a Monday afternoon and the place was very busy; but it was easy to order and quick to get your order. They do have burgers and fries and assorted food items, but we just had custard. They have rotating flavors, so you know it's made fresh. On the day we visited, they had vanilla, Swiss chocolate, mint chip, and Twix Tac Dough. Love frozen custard and yelped while in the Milwaukee area and found Kopp's and so glad we did. It is always a good sign when a business is filled with customers which Kopp's was at 3 in the afternoon in February. Being from the burbs of Chicago, Greg's, Comet's and Andy's are the local joints to go to and Kopp's is far above them all. I would put Kopp's as the second best custard I've had behind Erma's in Michigan, but not far behind. Great custard is all about the texture, smooth, creamy and it has to not melt quickly. Kopp's absolutely delivers on all three. For custard places I always have to try their vanilla as well as a flavored. I tried the vanilla, Reese's peanut butter cups and amaretto cherry cheesecake. The vanilla had a nice vanilla flavor. Reese's had peanut butter cups dispersed thru out though not overpowering had a good peanut butter flavor but you still tasted the vanilla. Amaretto cherry cheesecake had a nice cherry flavor with bits of cheesecake, again the flavor was distinct but didn't overpower the vanilla. If you enjoy custard, you will be so happy you came. Parking lot is huge and service reminded me of Portillo's as there were plenty of employees and efficient ordering. Single scoop is plenty and their prices are great. read more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. My wife placed an online order and it was for the wrong location. She immediately tried to call to cancel, but it took FOREVER to get through, over 15 minutes. Once she finally got someone on the phone, they told her they cannot refund and cancel the order, it was already made. Two issues: 1. There is NO SUPPORT online to cancel or manage orders. 2. They are NOT STAFFED APPROPRIATELY to be able to take calls timely to assist customers with online orders. I then called and got the manager and they proceeded to tell me "they cannot just throw away the food". I told them they ultimately will because we cannot make it out to that location and we could not get through because no one was picking up the phones. She just got snarky with me and I told her we will just stop payment at the bank. She didn't care and eventually hung up on me. There is NO exchange of products or goods and their stance is they are going to walk away with our money. There is NO support to manage online orders. This is pretty outrageous. An iconic spot in the Milwaukee area! The custard is so good! We got a small turtle sundae to split. The portion sizes are big. Lots of pecans on the sundae which is my favorite. We also got onion rings and fries. I was unimpressed by the fries, they reminded me of McDonald's fries, not much to them, but the onion rings were delicious! The indoor space is open and spacious and then they have a nice outdoor patio. The set up is brilliant. They have 2 counters, so 2 lines. One line is for ordering ice cream and the other is for food. I decided to try this place after receiving recommendations from several locals while I was in town for work. After trying, I was disappointed to discover that this place is more focused on nostalgia and "old school charm" than it is on quality and service. The burger was overdone and served on a bun that was too large for the patty. Fries were ok, but nothing special. The custard was the most disappointing since that seems to be their flagship menu item. It tasted cheap and generic. By comparison this place fails to meet my high expectations that have been set by Culver's. The restaurant is dirty and noisy. For me, it was an all around unpleasant environment. While the design is unique, it does not seem practical or up to standards of modern eateries. Got a recommendation to come here while I was in town, intended to just come for custard but ended up grabbing lunch too. You can tell that Kopp's is a Milwaukee staple as it was bustling on a Wednesday at lunchtime. All of the workers had retro style outfits on, which matched the vintage (but not old) look of the restaurant. What I got: Grilled chicken (with "the works" + lettuce and pickles), 1 scoop of Swiss chocolate frozen custard What I loved: the custard! It was velvety and sweet, I don't have a huge sweet tooth so one scoop was more than enough for me, but their signature sundaes looked good too What I liked: grilled chicken sandwich was good not great.
