One pack of shaved dark chocolate bits is $25. The employee was super helpful and also told us we could sample it next door! We went to try it and it was DELICIOUS!!! I am shocked and appalled that I have not reviewed this Kilwin's before. How is that possible?? This location isn't exactly new and shiny but there's something really lovely about that. It's partitioned into two spaces: chocolate/candy/treats on one side and the ice cream parlor on the other. We're likely to visit the "ice cream parlor" on the regular but I love the seasonal window displays of the chocolate shop. The parlor is no frills but the ice cream is delicious. Personal faves are the blue moon, superman, toasted coconut, and my seasonal favorite, marsh-mallow s'more. What I love about their s'more ice cream is that the ice cream itself is marshmallow flavored. It's not just swirls of marshmallow. Aces! A freshly made waffle cone with a scoop of s'mores is the dream! I also love their hot fudge and caramel sauce and we often buy jars of it to keep on hand at home to serve with fruit or our own ice cream treats. Last summer, during the height of the pandemic, we would also get quarts of the ice cream packed to enjoy at home and it was dreamy. We may continue that tradition this summer just to have on hand for, you know, ice cream emergencies. read more

Was wandering around downtown and my husband said let's check this place out. Walking in we were quickly greeted by two friendly employees. My eyes locked on those glass cases filled with a delicious varieties of sweets to choose from. I decided on a candy apple because they have been on my mind for a few weeks now. So when I seen the Carmel apple pie candy apple it had to be mine. And I also added on a Carmel chocolate cashew cluster too! Was so happy when I was asked if I'd like my apple cut up...... YES PLEASE!! And they gently wrapped up the pieces in wax paper so they didn't turn after hours of travel. YUM! Cherry Republic, we go to them for cherry cordials and since they didn't carry any, we went down the block to Kilwin's and we were not disappointed! Boyfriend got some yummy cordials, and I got some dark chocolate cherry bark, delicious! (especially if you like the 70% dark chocolate like I do myself) Then we went next door to the ice cream place and it was so yummy! So many cool flavors! I got pumpkin pie (great pumpkin flavor, and pieces of pie and graham cracker crust included!) and banana fudge (such a good light banana taste, fudgy swirls, pieces of fudge, and crispy chocolate pieces. My boyfriend got butter pecan and salted caramel ice cream (vanilla ice cream with salted caramel swirls and little caramel filled chocolate cups, highly recommended by him!) I most recently tried the fudge and it was really delicious. It was also shockingly expensive--about $5 for a chunk the size of your average brownie, but it was so good, I guess I would call it a worthwhile indulgence. After years of walking by, I stopped in the ice cream shop last night. A friendly worker behind the counter offered to let me try as many samples as I wanted, but I only tried the toasted coconut--very good, but I don't think I could eat an entire scoop or two of that. I opted for a chocolate-dipped cone with pistachio nut ice cream & New Orleans praline ice cream. The total came to $6.75, which isn't too bad considering I split it with my boyfriend. I thought the waffle cone was just okay... It was much lighter than I am accustomed to, but I can see why some people would like it. The pistachio ice cream was not too sweet, but I preferred the praline flavor. Might come back here if it's late enough in the day and Washtenaw Dairy is closed. read more

This is a lovely location, with an ice cream shop on one side, and a cute little chocolate shop next door. Each is unique and delightful. The staff is really helpful and offer samples of items you are curious about. In the ice cream shop, they had a really unique flavor. They have the normal chocolate peanut butter (which is delicious), but they also had a peanut butter pie for vanilla-lovers. It is a rich vanilla base with peanut butter deliciousness mixed in. And they have sorbets for those who can't eat dairy which are light and refreshing. In the chocllate shop, they have jEVERYTHING! My favorite recent finds were a new type of fudge with chocolate and pieces of cherry in it; the flavor is a wonderful combination. If you like mint, they also had a mint fudge which is quite strong (but in a good way). They also have a unique item called peanut butter drops that are little bits of rice crispy covered in peanut butter and then covered in chocolate. They are so tasty. Every time I walk by Kilwin's, I am overwhelmed by the lovely smell of chocolates and waffle cones. It makes it so hard to resist! I'm personally a milkshake person, so I honestly think I've only gotten chocolate milkshakes here, but that being said, they do make INCREDIBLE chocolate milkshakes. They are so rich and smooth. My one complaint is that I tend to feel that Kilwin's is a bit more expensive than a typical ice cream shoppe, but it is very high quality ice cream and a very cute shoppe, so I can splurge occasionally. read more

I visited Kilwin's Chocolate Shoppe as part a double-date, and we all had a fun time! The interior is really intimate and warm, with confections laid out everywhere. If you have a sweet-tooth, this place will give you more options than you thought possible. Since it was late and pretty cold outside, my girlfriend and I ordered hot chocolate. The price was a little higher than typical chain options (think Starbucks), but the quality was superb. To be frank, it tasted and felt like drinking a rich milk chocolate bar. The temperature was reasonable, and didn't burn our tongues immediately (which ruins the rest of the experience). The staff here is really friendly as well, and gave advice on what chocolates were great gifts. Overall, I'd recommend visiting Kilwin's if you're gift shopping or want something sweet. read more

They need a big sign that says: "OUR ICE CREAM IS SUSPECT, SO ASK FOR A SAMPLE BEFORE ORDERING ANYTHING, AS YOU CAN'T RETURN OR EXCHANGE IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT." Kilwin's has bad customer service. And when the butter pecan ice cream was frozen, and not tasting right (bad pecans) all they said was "we give samples, and if you don't like it sorry." That's it. Nothing more. Why would I sample my favorite ice cream flavor? I will not go back. Washtenaw Dairy is MUCH better. read more

Though the chocolate store right down the way has lovely truffles, Kilwin's makes me think of more old-timey candies: clusters, turtles, and all sorts of special treats that bring back childhood memories. For ice cream, I'd say that Stucchi's over on State Street is really just as good, but for a little token of affection for a loved one with a sweet tooth (or even a treat for yourself), this is one of the first downtown spots I'd suggest. read more

I only recently learned that Kilwin's is a chain. My ignorance of this fact is a good testament to how "homey" this location feels. It's dimly lit inside and it has the feel of an old time corner sweet shop. It's actually two shops right next to each other - the door to the left leads you into the chocolate shop, the door to the right leads you into the ice cream shop (pretty sure I have that right...) Whenever I'm craving an ice cream cone the first place that comes to mind is always Kilwins. Sure there are plenty of places around town to get a cone at but if you grew up in Michigan like me you know that Kilwin's has the best authentic ice cream flavors in the state. It's just too hard to pass up when you walk by and smell them making fresh waffle cones. Even when it's the dead of the winter I'll stop in if I get the craving. I'm just a plain old strawberry ice cream kinda guy and theirs is great. It's also nice that they have the chocolate and gift shop next door too. That side of their store has saved me a couple times when trying to find a "different" gift for someone. The one thing missing from Kilwin's these days though is Shakey Jake. Tourist trap or candy making gem? There was no wharf or "olde town" center nearby, and I didn't try the candy. It's the ice cream that has prompted me to review - it was not good. The rum raisin flavor tasted like just that - added in, whereas even in a chain product like Haagen Dazs, "Rum Raisin" stands as an entity on its own - the flavor an integral part, not even a part, the body of the ice cream. I like Kilwin's a lot. They have tasty ice cream. In fact, I once got a $40 parking ticket as I ran in to grab a couple scoops with a friend. And I'll still go back sometime. Because it wasn't really their fault. I'm not a fudge/chocolate ice cream person, and I'm really not an ice cream person in general. I do sometimes like fruity cold treats though, and Kilwin's has come through on a number of occasions. "Blueberry waffle cone" is probably my second favorite ice cream ever. the first is a black cherry ice cream that you have to go to an island at the top of the mitten to get. So as far as accessible ice cream, blueberry waffle cone takes the waffle cone. There is also a peach cobbler type ice cream that makes my tummy happy, but there are few things in life that I'd rather have than blueberries. read more

My husband, the Everlasting Gobstopper of Sweetness, treated me to ice cream at Kilwin's for our 2 year wedding anniversary last week. I really wanted a salted-caramel cone but they didn't have the flavor. As a substitute, I indulged in what they referred to as something along the lines of "The A2" or "Ann Arbor Special". Regardless, it was vanilla ice cream blended with Oreos and a caramel swirl. Simply superb. My husband had a candy tasting cherry ice cream that reminded me of sour cherry taffy. Both were so good! We took my nephew to Kilwins when he was about a year old and let me tell you, that kid's eyes were rolling in the back of his head with every bite - you could not get the ice cream in his mouth fast enough - he was going nuts! I have never seen the look of ecstacy on a child's face until we took my nephew to Kilwin's. FYI - he was eating chocolate. This review is for the ice cream shop... I must say, the ice cream shop is an absolute inconvenience. If your purchased items are less than $5 (which includes about 3 things on their ice cream menu), you have to pay by cash. Not many people have cash on them nowadays and I blew most of what I carried (~$10) at the Farmer's Market earlier that day. I like paying by cards, anyways, so I can keep track of all of my expenses. They are also a bit stingy with their ice cream, and didn't fill it to the cup's brim. They also don't let you combine flavors for the single cup. I had a look at another customer's waffle cone, and the scoop sunk into the near abyss of the cone, so I didn't even catch a view of the ice cream at all. The flavor of the ice cream was nothing special, and is comparable to nearby ice cream shops like Stucchi's, Ben and Jerry's, and Iorio's. Also, local ice cream shops take CARDS (debit and credit), AND their prices are significantly cheaper. The cheapest item on Kilwin's ice cream menu was nearly $4!!! At Stucchi's, you can check in on Yelp and get a good deal on your ice cream. Stucchi's and Ben and Jerry's also have deals on CampusSpecial app, making their prices much, much cheaper than Kilwin's. The only good thing about Kilwin's is the waft of their waffle cones, but honestly, I would not pay them a visit again because you can find similar ice cream flavors at other shops that won't enforce the nonsense credit/debit card rule, allow you to combine ice cream flavors even in a small cup, AND offer you better prices. I never knew how good vanilla ice cream could be until I had it here in a warm waffle cone....HEAVEN! There's nothing plain about it, this is the best vanilla ice cream I've had. So incredibly rich, creamy, anything but boring. The only reason why I didnt give 5 stars? You may have guessed it, it's expensive! Make that cone last because like all things that are exceptional, there's going to be a high price tag and being in Ann Arbor makes it higher. A definite try though if you havent been. This place is hand's down my favorite ice cream shop in Ann Arbor. I am a huge fan of their toasted coconut. The waffle cones are delicious and add to the experience. If I could eat their ice cream every day of the week, I definitely would. This place definitely is a little on the expensive side with it being around 4-5 dollars per person, but I still think it is worth the money. Omg, I just walked into dessert heaven. I got the double scoop in the waffle cone. I tried the turtle cheesecake and superman combo. The ice cream was very very good. This place definitely exceeded my expections! The turtle cheesecake ice cream was my favorite. It has a very rich flavor. The waffle cone was very different from any I've ever had. I believe it was made at Kilwins. It is thicker than most waffle cones. I really enjoyed it. They also have other homemade sweets to try such as Carmel apples, Carmel and chocolates. Kilwin's Ann Arbor is a cool place, with an almost rustic charm, outdoor seating, and a cute chocolate shop. But I go there for one reason: toasted coconut ice cream. This ice cream is probably the best I have ever had - it has an amazing light coconut flavor, with tiny shavings of toasted coconut mixed in with the ice cream. If you even remotely like coconut flavor, you will love this ice cream. I've had a few other flavors of ice cream, and they were pretty good - but not as good as toasted coconut. Some flavors had fairly large chunks of stuff in the ice cream - for example, the mint chocolate chip (which wasn't green, sadly) had rather large chunks of chocolate - I'm not a fan of large chunks in ice cream, so I didn't really enjoy these flavors... One more thing - one reviewer said that this location was one of two in Michigan. Umm, no. Kilwin's started in Northern Michigan (Petoskey), and there are at least 17 in the state (although each location looks unique and is probably well worth visiting). Kilwin's Ann Arbor - one of my favorite places to go in downtown Ann Arbor, awesome toasted coconut ice cream, and definitely worth checking out! read more

I'm not the biggest ice cream connoisseur, but the friend that dragged me into this place considers herself a lover of all ice cream. What did I like about this place vs Stucchi's or B&J? it was quiet. and the unique flavors. and it's independently owned. Was easy to grab a table (even though there are only a few), and it's off the main drag, but not really far from campus (2 blocks?). I got the toasted coconut ice cream, and it was DELISH. Very chewy with lots of pieces of toasted coconut. YUM. My friend also highly recommends the candied apples, but I didn't have any space after the huge waffle ice cream cone. read more

Flavors of the ice cream were good (we had the choco cookie dough, rocky road and maple walnut) but my only complaints are these: 1. ice cream was a little icy 2. the cookie dough part of the choco cookie dough was sour or something. Kilwin's will always hold a special place in my heart for being one of the ONLY places in Ann Arbor that you can order a Blue Moon milkshake. Do note that their ice cream flavors do rotate, so if you find them lacking in Blue Moon and instead decide to order a Superman milkshake... you will be mocked relentlessly by the girls at the counter. We have been going to Kilwins for years. Sweet treat! However, recently we were in and at check out noticed a display of mints for people who kissed Republicans and need to freshen their breath. I know many will think this is hilarious, but I am sick and tired of being ambushed by political statements in retail stores. This just contributes to the divisiveness that troubles our country. Wonder if Kilwins sells these mints in their South Carolina stores? Doubt it. There are other chocolate stores in A2 and they run professional businesses without taking a political stand.
