We have been going to Kilwins for years. Sweet treat! However, recently we were in and at check out noticed a display of mints for people who kissed Republicans and need to freshen their breath. I know many will think this is hilarious, but I am sick and tired of being ambushed by political statements in retail stores. This just contributes to the divisiveness that troubles our country. Wonder if Kilwins sells these mints in their South Carolina stores? Doubt it. There are other chocolate stores in A2 and they run professional businesses without taking a political stand. Remember when most of the East Coast was under a black out during that hot 2003 summer night? Well, people tend to forget that Michigan is also on Eastern time. That was the best night of my life. I got away from the internet, the books, and the tv. I strolled through campus under a dark evening of a million stars. I was surrounded by fireflies lighting the way to Kilwin's Chocolate Shoppe. Why those cute light bulb butts were directing me to more than half off ice cream and sorbet. I got 2 heaping cupfuls of sorbet to cool down that hot summer night while I was helping the store consume their melting goods. It was so nice, so very nice as Astrud Gilberto would say. On a normal day, I usually follow my olfactory glands for some caramel covered apples or yummy fudge. It's a sweet tooth's heaven. read more

It also gives off a homey vibe thanks to handmade signs stating "Watch your Children!" and "We'll be happy to serve you once you get off your cell phone!" The ice cream is tasty, but I haven't seen my favorite in rotation for awhile. It's the chocolate with chocolate covered almonds. I used to eat that with my cigarettes in lieu of coffee sometimes, much to the distaste of people who hate eating while smoking. Now I like the cappuccino chocolate chip. They also have an orangeade that they squeeze right in front of you for only $1.95. Kilwin's isn't bad, but their signs can feel a bit unwelcoming (though understandable) for a place where families frequent. So this one time, we were going to a show at the Blind Pig. We were going to see Rasputina, and thusly the group of six all decided independent of one another that dressing up like Neo-Victorians would be a great idea. So here we all meet up and - surprise! - it's all top hats, bowlers, hoop-skirts and corsets. Sounds like the beginnings of a great night. Where Kilwin's comes in is that we showed up super early to the show, and wanted something to do. We stumbled across Kilwin's and decided to grab some ice cream and sit along the sidewalk. I think the fact that Kilwin's looks all "old-tyme" had something to do with it. We were in character, after all. After being a fan of Stucchi's for so long, I was really surprised with Kilwin's. All these commercial companies try to do this "slow-churned" ice cream stuff, and thinking back, they're all a bad version of Kilwin's normal ice cream. This stuff does not taste like it's fat free, and I don't even care! It's a thick, flavorful ice cream that really hit the spot that night. Plus with the outdoor seating we were able to catch a few strange looks at our clothes. read more

Kilwin's isn't bad. It's a wonderfully adorable little shop, with lots of interesting flavors with cute names like "Ann Arbor Mud," and I've always wanted to try one of the caramel apples that sit out towards the windows. However, it's so hard to beat Blank Slate, which is just down the road. The ice cream scooper only lets you try two flavors (whereas at BS you get as many as you want), the waffle cones are not nearly as fresh, and while the ice cream is creamy, I always find it a bit too bland for my taste. All of the chocolate varieties seem to blend together, tasting like the same milky coldness across the board. Also, somebody please tell the woman running the shop to smile more. She always seemed to be distressed or upset whenever I came in, which is not exactly conducive to a happy ice cream eating environment. With Blank Slate just a few skips and a hop down the road with much more interesting flavors and much more smiles, I'd recommend going there if you're looking for your ice cream fix. read more

I love visiting the Midwest and I enjoy the good natured jokes from the Midwesterners about New Jersey being so rude, unpleasant, discourteous, etc. Then moments later some Midwesterner does something that makes NJ look like a "Polite Convention". Visiting Kilwin's the other night I witnessed a poor guy drop his cone a half step after paying for it. If he was looking for any mercy he should have ordered ice cream in NJ. He dropped a smallish cone and was immediately told if he wanted a replacement he'd have to pay for it. Kilwin's staff looked like they actually enjoyed breaking the bad news. Wasn't like the guy had the biggest, most expensive thing on the menu. He had a smallish cone. The ice cream was OK, the customer service reminded me I wasn't in NJ. I feel like if I was at my local ice cream shop and this happened the guy would say "fugetta bout it" and create a customer for life by replacing the cone. read more

Overrated. I spent $9 on a chocolate pretzel rod and other chocolates. The pretzel rod was so stale it wasn't crunchy. Threw it away. Other chocolate was ok, but Hershey's and dove is better. read more

Stuff here is OK, not great. I went with a bunch of family one winter nite (ie, the place was empty but for us) and we all got the distinct impression from something the girl there said that they were closing up soon. I asked her what time they closed and it was about an hour from that moment. We all looked at each other like- OOOHHHH KAYYYYY.....it was the same attitude the whole time we were there....they just seemed totally annoyed by our presence and as though they couldn't wait for us to leave. Normally, I would have told my nieces and nephews to keep it down (they were getting quite rambunctious) but I figured a) we were the only ones in there and b) it seemed to be pissing off the counter girls, so instead, I egged the kids on... Despite my deep pockets, I must say I was somewhat taken aback by the $30 plus dollars I spent for a few kids and a couple adults....when we went to leave, out of stupid politeness, I called goodby to the chick and do you think she even responded? Once again, Ann Arbor businesses doing US a favor by letting us spend our money there....I hope the recession isn't biting them in the butt....bcs I will never go back there. Plus besides, the whole old-tymey tourist trap theme is really cheesy and NOT in a good way! read more

Two attributes: expensive and low quality. I consider myself an ice cream connoisseur. I don't need fancy organic flavors, but I do want high quality. I tried a small of the chocolate. The ice cream is very plain tasting...the flavors are not rich or intense, but the price shock is. $3.75 for a small. This tastes like cheap store-bought ice cream...save yourself the money and get an entire pint from the store. Oh, and two other disappointments. The little bit of cone they stick in it is stale. Also, in a small they won't let you mix 2 flavors. You have to get a large for $4.25. read more

Overpriced and stingy on ice cream. They weighed it, never a good sign.

I had the cherry flavor. It's bright pink -- definitely dyed. The cherry pieces are extremely sweet; they've been soaked in syrup, negating any benefit there might've been in their claimed origin of Traverse City. The ice cream is sweet and gloopy, a heavily stabilized concoction that children will love but adults won't be able to finish. I recommend walking just down the street to Blank Slate Creamery, which has a cherry flavor that makes this stuff seem like playdough in comparison. read more

First time at this Kilwins, the service and staff were very friendly. I am a coffee lover, I tried the "cappuccino chocolate chip" and my sister tried the "toasted coconut" flavor. My flavor was perfectly balanced! The chucks of chocolate chips mixed with the delicate cappuccino cream were not intensely sweet which I enjoyed very much! My sisters flavor was not a disappointment, for coconut lovers, a must try! The defined taste of toasted coconut mixed with the vanilla cream was perfection! Great selection of delicious chocolates. It was nice they were open so late on Valentine's day. Didn't get anything unusual: salted caramel, strawberry bonbons, vanilla cream, and chocolate pretzels. Chocolate covered pretzels are such a simple treat, but they were so so good. read more

The ice cream offerings are pretty classic and don't get too crazy but are still delicious. There are lots of great choices so everyone is sure to find something they like. The line gets pretty crazy so it can be hectic especially at the counter but the workers are friendly and helpful. read more

I really like the waffle cones here and in the summer it's a nice treat that quickly will melt all over you as you make your way back to downtown or other parts of campus! I loved the rustic, old fashioned look to the interior. Service was only ok when we most recently went. The prices are pretty high as well. Overall, it seems like you may get more value at a place like Stucchi's but they have a great series of choices outside of ice cream here. A family member had the hot fudge sundae and loved it. I don't do the whole ice cream thing as much as there are all kinds of artificial flavors and some of the other ingredients are not vegetarian friendly. Still I think there would be plenty here I could try otherwise. I'll go back and ask! read more

It's a little pricey, but I love sugar! Who doesn't? The staff has always been friendly and the place always seems really clean. Love it.

Took me four years (I'm a senior now) to realize that this is the best place to go for ice cream in downtown Ann Arbor. Their salted caramel is absolutely perfect and the waffle cones are SO GOOD. They make it right there in the shop. One downside is that it's quite pricey (almost $5 for one scoop in a waffle cone). But it's worth it in my opinion, and the "one scoop" is certainly much larger than it actually sounds. read more

Mmmm Kilwin's!!!! They have DIVINE chocolate ice cream (of all kinds). So, they wouldn't give me my first job EITHER (thank you very much, Stucchi's), but they have really yummy, local ice cream. My husband and I love, love this place! He likes the candy side and always orders the chocolate covered toffee and I always go to the ice cream side for my favorite, Ann Arbor Mud! What prompted me to finally write this review however is the new Smores ice cream - marshmallow ice cream with chocolate covered graham crackers, WHAT!?!? So delicious. Petoskey Michigan Kilwin's was probably my original Kilwin's ice cream cone place, or maybe Saugatauk. I always feel like I'm walking into an up North home kitchen of sorts. If you want predictability Kilwin's is good (though an odd use of floor room for Ann Arbor's main street.) Also, if you've ever been one of those depressed vacationers wandering around looking at store fronts, Kilwin's is a good place to use to sort of stand in line and sulk. Is there anything better than 3 days vacation with an ice cream cone? Bring home a bag of taffy as a gift...you know? read more

My family was visiting from California and I brought them here to get some treats. The staff was extremely rude and the girl managing the front of the ice cream shop rolled her eyes at us multiple times while we ordered. For how overpriced the items are you'd think they'd provide better service. We walked next door to the chocolate shop and same problem. The staff was extremely rude and we felt there were underlying racial issues. It ruined our Ann Arbor trip as my family refused to go to any other shops. So good job and thanks for representing Ann Arbor's community. I will not be returning ever and will be informing management as well as warding off others from this shop. read more

On July 10th I stopped in to Kilwin's Chocolate Shoppe to pick up a mixed box of chocolates for a gift. Upon entering the store I could hear a woman on the phone who appeared to be rushing in and out of the front of the shop placing orders, and I saw two young men who appeared to be simply loitering in the back room / possibly trying to help the frazzled woman. I stood at the case for a few minutes, waiting for someone to come and help me. I even made eye contact with one of the men, and I know that I was in the woman's field of vision, as I saw one of the young men make eye contact with her and gesture toward me, to which her reply was an angry shake of the head while once again rushing in to the back of the shop. After standing there for several minutes with no attempt at communication from the staff and having been quite rudely snubbed, I decided to leave. If you can't even greet a customer with a smile and a single upheld finger (the commonly accepted gesture for "Just a moment, please!"), then you certainly don't need my business. We live within a block or two of Kilwins and try to frequent there as much as we do other local haunts, but for goodness sakes I think we have visited Kilwins for the last time. Items are way over priced for the value that you get, many times over we have walked away with less than fresh merchandise. The ice cream is often freezer burnt and the caramel corn is always stale. Years ago you knew when you walked into the place whatever you left with was always fresh and it was going to be a wonderful treat; not so much anymore. The staff is young and cold and you feel as if they couldn't care less if you were there or not. Last week I stopped in on a weak moment and ordered 2 pints of ice-cream (in all honesty they were good) 4 caramels and a package of caramel corn (we had company) I asked for a bag and the girl behind the counter tossed one at me and said "if you must!" Hell yes I must I was on a bike for crying out loud!
