This place is a classic Michigan staple. If you have never been to the area or experienced a Kilwins, this is a must do while you are here. It always smells amazing and the staff is super friendly, eager to give you samples. This location is small, but primarily just for ice cream. I love the cake batter flavor since it is chocolate and vanilla and not the blue icing variety (although I do like that one too). They gave us a double kid's scoop in a waffle cone. Kilwins is, without a doubt, my favorite place to grab a waffle cone and some ice cream. This location is no different. We stopped in this evening after a date day in Ann Arbor. I absolutely loved the ambience and decor of this location. I truly felt welcomed, almost like I was in a family's house around Christmas. The scooper was kind and let my boyfriend and I sample a few flavors. I was a bit bummed they didn't have the s'mores flavor in stock (it's my all time favorite) but it gave me the chance to try a new flavor instead! It's funny because I tend to go to Kilwin's more when I'm out of town, say in a vacation town like Saugatuck, then I do to the location in my own town. But whenever we go here I always ask myself, "why aren't we here more often??" The ice cream is delicious. The location is great. They're open late in the spring and summer months, and the small bits of seating outside make a lovely place to enjoy your cone on a nice summer evening. And the line is always much shorter than the other ice cream place down the street (which I also love but am always daunted by the line). I know everyone here's obsessed with Blank Slate but I have a confession to make, I low key like Kilwins better! I know, Ann Arbor heresy! It's not the best ice cream I've ever had but I really love the creaminess and richness and it never tastes too sweet. It's just consistently great, you know? Kilwins is by far the most average-ly solid ice cream place I've been to in awhile. Its homely, factory aesthetic provides a nice atmosphere to enjoy ice cream in and the workers were all fairly friendly and didn't mind some small talk while getting ice cream. Mind you, I also came at a very unbusy time. In terms of seating, I counted a total of 10 seats within the parlor which isn't necessarily a bad thing because most people walk and eat ice cream. However this place certainly would be hard to visit with a medium sized group of people since the area of the parlor is also fairly small. Also they have a waffle making station at the windows of the ice cream parlor which felt really out of place and awkward. The worker there wasn't super friendly and I just felt like I want intruding on her work. My friend and I got the Heaven's Hash with some waffle cone pieces in it and it was fairly good! The ice cream itself was a nice rich and creamy texture. I thought the flavor could have been more present but it was still there. The waffle pieces really added a necessary crunch that spiced up the ice cream because the flavor really wasn't pulling the effort. In conclusion, this was fairly good! I saw nothing wrong, except for a slightly lack of flavor and slightly expensive ice cream. read more

It's a great little spot tucked off the high end restaurants off Main Street. I stopped in after dinner and drinks with a sweet tooth that was screaming for ice cream. Besides only Kilwins can satisfy me when it's desert time. The place is very clean and very warm and inviting. A reminder of mom and grandmas house during the holidays. Always baking Christmas goodies for family and friends and filling the air with comforting smells. The service was spectacular and she had me try the salted caramel ice cream and it was heavenly in every way. I had my usual mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone and relaxed inside while I slowly favored every lick And bite of the savory waffle cone. That warm welcome, plus the friendly staff and delicious ice cream, makes Kilwins one of my favorite ice cream spots in Ann Arbor. I love the ambience of this place. The lights and decorations makes me feel like I'm in someone's home for the holidays. The kids who work here are also patient, which I appreciate because grumpy employees at a dessert place can really ruin an experience. They let you sample as many flavors as you'd like without making you feel guilty for doing so. Of all the options, I absolutely love the toasted coconut flavor. It's light and has little pieces of coconut in it. My friends were fans of the Mackinac island fudge. The waffle cone is also one of the best I've ever had. It's thick and tastes so fresh! The only downside of Kilwins is the price. A single scoop will cost you $4.25, and a waffle cone is an extra $1. Compared to Washtenaw Dairy, which gives you a very generous amount for a kids size, Kilwins is a bit expensive. I definitely go here less often than I go to Washtenaw Dairy, but it's always a wonderful treat! read more

Never in my life have I been this disappointed with a food purveyor. I waited in line for 15 minutes for a small cone and immediately upon paying, I accidentally dropped the cone in full view of 20 other customers. Without missing a beat, the register attendant made it clear that unfortunately they would not replace my purchase, I would have to purchase again and they would not refund me. I have been buying ice cream from Kilwin's for the better part of four years on a regular basis in the summer. The purchase was too small to quibble about with the college students who are working behind the counter but it is my sincerest hope that the owners read this review. I will NEVER, EVER purchase from you again. You establishment had a line out the door and your employees felt $4 has more value to the store than maintaining the consistency of a regular customer. Shame on you. I am not posting this because I want any kind of replacement. Never have I seen such poor customer service in the face of a long line of customers who are preparing to buy from you. In fact, I'm going to take this a step further. I run a booth at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. I am going to buy 10 of my customers ice cream next week from Ben and Jerry's. Normally, I hate Yelp. The mere fact that I posted anything on this site at ALL gives me a stomach ache. However, your cash register attendant didn't miss a beat in telling me I had to make another purchase and they wouldn't replace my dessert. THIS WAS A MERE $4 PURCHASE. Normally we love going to this place for some good old-fashioned ice cream. Today however, on this Saturday afternoon, we had an absolutely appalling experience. My wife was served by this older lady, perhaps an owner? And she was completely rude and unprofessional, and to be honest, possibly a racist. My wife, being an Asian-American woman, entered being completely polite, asked for a few samples of ice cream. We were met with a terrible, snarky attitude... rolling of eyes, short tempered responses. We were like "what did we do..?" We then went ahead to order our ice cream, asked for the first, and mid-sentence the lady walked away before were even finished talking, to get our order. When she came back with the ice cream, and we stated that we wanted to order another, she gave us attitude again saying that "we didn't tell her that we wanted another ice cream". How can we when you just walk away mid sentence so rudely?? Continuing with this passive aggressive charade, she huffed and puffed, going back and getting our second ice cream... no "thank you" or "bye"... To top it off, two older Caucasian gentlemen we're next to us, and she totally changed her tone of voice, attitude, said goodbye to them.. same thing with another woman and her son who were also Caucasian. This is the only explanation I could think of for this treatment of a paying, polite customer and quite frankly, it was infuriating. We were very close to making a scene but decided that it was not worth it. Her entire interaction with us was absolutely out of line, and I am appalled that someone who runs a business could treat people with such rudeness, especially when we were forcing ourselves to take the high road be polite through it. It is sad because this place has good ice cream, a wonderful old fashioned setting, and usually very nice workers who are so accommodating and polite. So If you ever enter this place and come across an older woman that I can only assume to be the owner, (because she gives orders to the other workers), oh and if you are a minority perhaps... I'd think about just walking back out the door and heading to Blank Slate Creamery. Believe me you will thank me for sparing you this ridiculously repulsive customer service. Even though the location's great and Kilwin's is a very well known Michigan brand, it often feels like this location doesn't really get the love it deserves. Maybe it's a little bit outshone by local A2 ice cream favorites-- Blank Slate and Washtenaw Dairy in particular. But Kilwin's more than has the flavor to keep up I think. Their ice cream in general has this rich, almost buttery flavor to it. It tends to be pretty consistent across their non-sorbet flavors, and I absolutely love it. It's rich and on the heavier side but not overbearingly so, as I think Blank's Slate's ice cream sometimes can be. Anything with fudge or chocolate in it, and certainly any flavor with "tracks" in it, will be a standout. My personal favorite is the banana fudge. I've also heard (and smelled) great things regarding the waffle cones. Can't go wrong with the ice cream here! read more

Walked in last night and ordered my wife her usual Rum Raisin (when they have it)- I ordered in a large cone dipped in chocolate 2 scoops. Chocolate peanut-butter and some other brownie flavor. Paid and went outside. I have to tell you something is very wrong. The cone was terrible. It was not sweet in flavor, very thick and just odd overall. The ice cream oh no- Kilwins what have you done??? It tasted like wax. Pure wax. It was so bad I took 1 bite of the cone, 1 bite of each Ice cream and looked at my wife and said I'm not eating this, it's pure garbage. I walked over to the bin and dumped it all! Gross. I had the cherry flavor. It's bright pink -- definitely dyed. The cherry pieces are extremely sweet; they've been soaked in syrup, negating any benefit there might've been in their claimed origin of Traverse City. The ice cream is sweet and gloopy, a heavily stabilized concoction that children will love but adults won't be able to finish. I recommend walking just down the street to Blank Slate Creamery, which has a cherry flavor that makes this stuff seem like playdough in comparison. read more
