I really like Kilwins and stop here everytime I am in Downtown Asheville. I like how they make the products in the store, sometimes while you are there but if not, the front window shows what they have been making. They give a sample of fudge when you enter and if you buy two slices a third is free. There are caramels, caramel apples, chocolates, marshmallows, popcorn, ice cream. The chocolates are not individually wrapped or even put in a box. What I ordered were all put together in plastic wrapper so were a melted glob by the time I got to them. It is disappointing as the chocolates are not cheap. I will stick to the fudge and ice cream at this Kilwins. The store has one table with two chairs so could use some more seating in the store. We promised our kids a sweet treat if they could make it all the way through a long meal. We typically don't bribe them to be on their best behavior when eating delicious food. But new city and house, rough naps and me wanting to enjoy it, leads to desperate measures. I think they would have been fine. But why would I pass up my opportunity to get local ice cream!! We found Kilwins on Yelp and they were still open when we got done and were walking distance. The interior was similar to most upscale candy/ice cream shops you find. They also had that oh, so good smell and fomo of all the things I wasn't buying. I decided to get the mint chocolate chip. It is my favorite flavor and usually my litmus test for how good the ice cream is. Well.... as you can tell by my star rating, it was really good. Very kind people working here! As soon as you walk in the door, one of the staff members will tell you to put hand sanitizer on and grab a mask if you don't already have one. My friends and I ducked in to grab some ice cream and avoid the rain, and we were very happy with our decision! The store is conveniently in downtown Asheville so very close a bunch of other small shops and restaurants. There is ample street parking right outside. The displays are all super enticing with the fudge, candy apples, ice cream, and other treats. I had to restrict myself to just one scoop of ice cream. The workers were super nice and friendly even when my indecisive self asked to try a million different flavors. I ended up with the Georgia peach, which was both fruity and creamy at the same time. It sounds like a weird combination but it was really good! If you haven't, it's a homemade candy and ice cream franchise based out of Northern Michigan. The standards at Kilwin's are high and they serve "the good stuff". The stores have that old time retro feel. The employees at this location are energetic and "Johnny on the spot". Even if you're not really hungry, the incredible smell will make you want something anyway. While we were there, they were heating up caramel and getting apples ready to dip! Nice!! Usually we get some candy from a Shoppe and about 50-75% of it is good and the rest is so so or not good. Not so with Kilwin's!!! They hit it out of the park!! We tried the peanut popcorn (holy smokes was this stuff good), the sour gummies (usually these things feel like a rip off but they were so good!) and chocolate covered marshmallows. It was all so good that when we returned from Asheville we found a Kilwin's shop near home to go to. I think this will become our special treat go-to place!! After our visit in our hometown we learned that there's a bit of a premium charged in Asheville. The same bag of gummies was $2.99 at home and in Asheville sold for $4.50. 50% up charge!! Been to many Kilwin's around the country! This store was very small comparable to others! Staff was very friendly, quick and efficient. I'm not a real big fan of the fudge it always seems a little grainy. I was very impressed that they had Buckeye's, this is an Ohio chocolate filled with peanut butter. I didn't realize this was a national franchise, founded in Michigan, I think? You might remember this Asheville Kilwin's because a couple years back Austin Scarlett and Santino Rice of Project Runway fame blew through town and made the owner and the owner's daughter cute pink dresses as part of a short-lived spinoff series focusing on small towns/real people. Anyways, this shop is definitely part of the community. People like Kilwin's around here. That pink dress is the stuff of legend, too. I went in there last week with a friend who likes candy a lot (I don't, particularly). I got persuaded to try some of their product, and I gotta say, they're dang good confectioners.
