Like stepping into heaven after a risque incident involving a tractor trailer, I thought I was dreaming when I walked into a space that was noir and welcoming. On another squid hunt I came across this place with the appetizer listed as Grilled Calamari and the description "BBQ whole squid with teriyaki sauce". Sounds good to me. I paired it with their "Indian pancake" which I guess was like roti since it came with curry dip. I ordered and it was delivered to me in no time. Yup, I was right about the "pancake". It was a bit too greasy for me but I still ate it. The curry dip was good and helped cut down on the greasiness. The squid was delicious. Kimbe is unmatched. I've been to the restaurant several times and also ordered for takeout/delivery, neither of which disappoint. I usually go for sushi but their spicy ramen is worth a visit too. Their service is perfectly attentive and the prices are reasonable, with a large enough menu for everyone to be happy. The restaurant always has enough seating to be seated without a wait but is never fully empty. They also have gluten free soy sauce, a nice and thoughtful addition, and they're open to reasonable substitutions. In a takeout order I simply noted that I love salmon, and they substituted the tuna roll that comes in their sushi dinners with a salmon roll! I didn't even have to ask. I've been back several times since the negative dine-in experience, but have only ordered carryout. I place all my orders online and have the option to pay in advance or pay when I pick up my order. My order has always been ready by the promised time and the interaction with the staff has either been neutral or positive. We'll usually order their grilled calamari with teriyaki sauce, the Kimbe roll, and lo mein or fried rice. The lo mein isn't as good as other places but my girls are picky and that's one of their favorite dishes. The last time we ordered it, I'm pretty sure they gave us the wrong dish because the noodles were rice noodles, and the flavor profile was way off. So we ordered edemame, a Philly roll and the Long Island roll. I could've used more salt on the edemame, but that's a minor complaint and probably specific to me. The Philly roll was good, as was the Long Island roll. My girlfriend is a little more adventurous with new places, so she got a bento box. She was happy with all aspects of it. Side note, the service here is lightning fast. We were very surprised at how fast each item we ordered came out to us. If anything, maybe it was a little too fast. I love a good lunch deal and Kimbe delivered! I stopped in to order midday and the dining room was fairly empty. After placing my order, I was told that it would take about 10 minutes for my meal to be ready. For the lunch specials, they offered bento boxes, roll combinations, and wok and grilled entrees. For the bento boxes, there was a choice between hibachi or teriyaki meats. I got the teriyaki salmon which came with grilled vegetables, white rice, a spring roll, and a California roll. Tried out Kimbe Asian Bistro on Beach for the first time today. I ordered a spider roll and a variation of a salmon role. It was fine. Didn't blow my skirt up or anything. But I will say the duck roll was certainly tasty. It's roast duck, avocado, and mixed greens, wrapped in a scallion pancake, and topped with eel and "yum-yum" sauce. Place was pretty empty, clean and food came out quick. I went with the lunch special with 3 rolls and a salad for $10. This was a steal. I went with the Mexican roll, salmon katsu (my favorite of the 3), and a sweet potato roll which I had never had before but was dynamite. Decent portion sizes and all 3 were full of flavor. The service and folks are super nice but wow - the food has been completely homogenized. There was like no Asian flavor or inspiration in the food other than the titles. The only thing we liked was the tempura sampler as it did have great broth. Mongolian beef was just so "soggy" - no crisp to the beef or really any flavor at all. General Tso chicken was a bit better but over breaded and just ugh. I had 3 bites of each and that was enough. Well we had to come back and try their Ramen today, see if it ranks up there with the sushi. It does!! Far and away the best Ramen we have found in Jacksonville. The temperature of the Ramen was correct, piping hot (most restaurants serve it "American hot" which is much cooler than the Japanese way). The noodles were correct also, most places we have tried serve skinner ones that get too soggy too fast. The egg was perfect, marinated in soy and soft boiled just right. Meat cuts are normally real thin, these were nice and thick. We also got some Sushi to go and as we were driving home my wife said "Knobbysan, even their to go Sushi is pretty!" The house roll doesn't look impressive, but the flavor is pretty good. The fish seems fresh enough. I ordered the Kimbe ramen because I'm a ramen slut. The miso broth was drinkable but tasty. The shrimp and pork were both quite savory and a great fit for ramen. The egg was good too. With that said, I don't think it's a real broth in the sense that it's not carrying the umami of the meat. Other than the protein, the main additions were onions, corn, and a bit of scallion. Like I've written in other reviews, I'm not a fan of corn in ramen. I really like Kimbe Asian Bistro. It is conveniently located on Beach Blvd not too far from Hodges on the north side of Beach. We walked in on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch. We were immediately greeted and seated by a hostess and were given our menus. Within a few minutes the waitress came to take our drink orders and to see if we were ready to order. We asked for just a couple more minutes and she politely left and came back a few minutes later. We each ordered the three sushi roll lunch special that came with soup and salad as well as the rock shrimp appetizer. Within a few minutes our soup and salad was brought to the table and just a couple minutes later so was our appetizer. The miso soup was very good. We both got the salad with the sesame ginger dressing and it was also very good. The rock shrimp appetizer was spectacular! It had quite a few tempura shrimp with a drizzle of sauces over it, just enough for some flavor but not too much so that the tempura stayed crispy. It was seriously wonderful! A little bit later our sushi came out and it was very good. The fish tasted fresh and had a great flavor. We got simple rolls but those are often my favorite so you can actually taste the flavor of each fish. Our lunch was great and the service was wonderful. The wait staff was attentive with refilling our drinks but was not overbearing. They gave us time to sit and talk and the food was delivered promptly. I ordered the Bento Box with steak teriyaki. The steak was prepared just as I requested and was very tender and juicy. I loved the big pieces of onion but I'm not a fan of broccoli. It's not the way they prepared it, I just don't like broccoli lol. This dinner is a great deal for $11.99. My daughter loved her steak Hibachi and spring roll, which I found a little mushy because it sits in a duck sauce, instead of having it on the side. We both found the sushi hard to eat because it fell apart as soon as you tried to eat it, but the flavors were fantastic. My chicken hibachi was excellent, except for the broccoli, and I normally love broccoli. Really nice touch to see brown rice as an option. We also took home General CSU's chicken and done Mongolian beef, which got rave reviews at home. Not a "blow me away" fantastic choice, but a solid choice for this area.
