Still my favorite sushi bar in Jacksonville!!! Today I had the chawan mushi (Japanese egg pudding) and it was absolutely heavenly!!! The best item on the menu... so full of flavor and has hearty pieces of fish and mushrooms inside. The hamachi kama was delicious as well. It was deep fried when it's usually grilled but still juicy on the inside and the skin was divine! Love this place. The ambiance is super Japanese, feels like I'm in Tokyo! We decided on Hiro since it was my choice for my birthday. And since I love sushi, I chose Hiro after reading beforehand that the chef is from Tokyo! I ordered the Chirashi and was happy with the sushi's freshness. My mom, not being a sushi fan, ordered french fries lol. I've never had udon served in a pot before so that was a nice touch! The noodles were bouncy, the broth was slightly sweet, and the toppings felt very authentic. The salmon ikura don tasted fresh, and was nicely prepared. The restaurant is located in an unassuming strip mall, but don't sleep on this place! I love this sushi spot! This is probably the most authentic in town as the sushi chef here is actually Japanese. He's very funny too and his service is spot on. It was quiet. I was surprised there wasn't more patrons while visiting. I got the sushi lunch and it was simple and fast but I will def be returning in the future to try more of the other sushi cuts because the sushi wasn't cheap quality! Go check them out! read more

One table with two people. One table with one person and the third table were three as people our table the fourth table had seven people. There was one worker in the restaurant, and ordering was confusing the waiter at first didnt yet what we wanted but soon as properly fulfilled the request. The waiter was kind, and patient. The waiter gave us complementary onion rings, I did c not try one, but from my accompaniments I heard they were good. Miso soup and salad was served at 6:22pm.My meal was served at 6:26pm. The food was good, the chicken tastes amazing and that's a lot coming from a huge picky eater. The rice was fluffy and moist. The handrolls came out at 6:35pm Avocado salad, and sashimi came out at 6:40, a side of teriyaki chicken with rice was ordered at 6:40 the lobster roll came out at 6:48pm. The tuna avocado rolls, quantity two. Came out along with salmon avocado roll at 6:50pm. Instead of a tuna hand roll at 6:52pm we a got tuna roll, the waiter confused went back to the kitchen to fix it. The corrected item came out at 6:57pm. The side of teriyaki chicken and rice. When we were finished with O'Neill, the wiggles came and gave us seven complementary mini cheesecakes. Food was amazing Service was good. Would recommend for a family outing. read more

Waitstaff is young and has some areas they could improve on like speed of order taking, bringing water, talking through specials/ happy hour, etc. but they get an A for effort and kindness! Sushi was some of the best I've had in Jax. Chef was very kind, checked on us periodically and wanted to make sure everything was to our liking. My husband had hibachi which he also said was some of the best he's had in Jax! Steak was seasoned and cooked so well, veggies were delicious and rice was yummy too. Upon paying, they gave us each a hot and fresh fried Oreo which was a nice touch. Restaurant is clean and beautiful! Would definitely recommend. Also, they had karaoke? We've been to Hiro Japanese Restaurant a few times and really should visit more often. I love their tonkatsudon and egg pudding. We've tried a few dishes/sushi/sashimi, but those two really stand out to me. I've always loved tonkatsudon (fried pork cutlet with egg omelets, onion, sauce over rice). I have to say, theirs is one of the most flavorful / balanced I've ever tried. The egg pudding was delicate and flavorful, just the way I like it. It is a fairly small restaurant tucked away in a shopping center. But the service was friendly. The owner/chef came to talk to us, asking how we enjoyed the meal, which is always appreciated. This place was great when it first opened, but it has gone downhill fast. The quality has dropped, and it feels like they keep getting cheaper. The clear soup used to come with a herb serving of crispy onions on the side and now it is just comes mushy onions in the soup. That's been sitting there for who knows how long. The sushi feels rushed, and the shrimp tempura is not what it used to be. I have given this place three chances and left disappointed every time. If you love sushi, you are better off driving a little farther for better quality. read more

Chef and staff were so friendly and the chef provided us an amazing traditional Japanese omakase experience. We visited as a family of 7 on a weeknight. We were seated right away and our waiter was prompt and friendly. We ordered the Saba rice, zaru soba, sushi boat, ikura sushi, and several different rolls. Everything was really good. We are very familiar with Japanese food, because we are part Japanese and have visited Japan several times, so we tend to be picky about our Japanese food. Being part-Japanese and having been raised on Japanese comfort foods I find this restaurant as close to authentic as can be found in JAX. The menu is quite nice with yummy appetizers, sushi, sashimi, rice dishes, ramen, salad, and even desserts. Drinks are also varied from hot tea, iced tea, soda, saki, beer, etc. The chef is so professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. I could that he has pride in his trade because everything was like an art masterpiece. The flavors, textures, and delicate details were all top rate! This is definitely what I am looking for in a sushi venue. I even got to order extra yummy spicy mayo and ginger. We liked everything! The chef was so kind to come by our table and personally asked us if we liked our food and if it was our 1st or 2nd visit. He was sincere and genuine. We were very happy to see the other happy patrons and we even met a returning customer at the door as we waited for the venue to open. She shared with us that this was the 1st place that she ever had sushi and she returned here knowing that she would have another opportunity to enjoy the food.
