I wanted to love this place. It's so convenient for me, reasonably cheap, byob, and they have board games. But I've come multiple times in the hopes of getting something delicious, and after every time I wished I had gone somewhere else--the food is just not that good. The service takes ages no matter how empty the place is, and their bibimbop tastes more of aggressive seasoning than actual ingredients. Do yourself a favor, and go somewhere else. This place is shaping up to be awesome. Get in now before it gets popular, because I'm betting it will. We had the breakfast burrito, musubi, and curry rice along with a Korean coffee. All the rice was excellent--sticky but not mushy, just like it ought to be. The burrito, while on the small side (EDIT: lol no, they've since made it huge WHICH IS AWESOME BECAUSE IT'S DELICIOUS), was great--its rice paper shell was chewy and tasty and the meat was perfectly spiced. The musubi was a great change of pace--Spam, egg, and sticky rice bound together with nori. Simple. The flavor of the curry was mostly forgettable--just your basic curry spice with no particular twist that we could detect--but it was simmered well and the meat was tender. Plus it came with a small side of tasty kimchi. Atmosphere: One part trendy/hip, one part laid back and inviting. It's a small shop that probably seats about 20 total. The hours are a little limited right now, but they'll probably be extended in the future. Oh, and it's BYOB. 1. We found free parking right across the street! 2. It wasn't busy when we went (6:30ish on a Wednesday), so seating was abundant even though the place isn't too big. It's a order-at-the-counter kind of place, so we went up & were helped by a very friendly lady. 3. We ended up ordering dduk bok kkee, bulgogi, & the ramen (at their recommendation). The portions were smaller than we expected, but they were pretty good (especially for the city). We finished the 3 dishes between the 2 of us & still had room for dessert (somewhere else). Stumbled upon Kimchi Pop and it was such a pleasant surprise. TBH, I was a bit nervous to try this place but I'm so glad I did. The dumpling soup tasted homemade. You know it's the real deal when there's an ahjumma in the kitchen working her ahjumma magic. My boyfriend had the cold noodle, which was also tasty (next time, we will probably ask them to make it spicier). I also appreciate the portions of the entrees here. Googled best Korean food after leaving the Auto Show at McCormick Place and this restaurant showed up. My wife has been wanting to try Korean Food after watching Korean drama so much lately. Very authentic and delicious. I definitely recommend trying this place. It was on track to be our neighborhood spot until the items below. We have been going to this place for months and until recently enjoyed our experiences there. Unfortunately the service has deteriorated since their opening which is the reason for the 2 star rating. In the last week we've patronized Kimchi Pop twice... or at least tried to. The first time our side dish came out 30 minutes after we finished our main dish. The waiter kept saying it was coming and we kept waiting "5 more minutes". The second time we ordered take out. We showed up 10 minutes after the quoted 30 minutes and were informed that it would be 10 more minutes. After pressing them on the realism of that estimate the front desk person went back to ask. Came out and told us it would not be done in 10 minutes. So I have a 3 year old who was with me at pick up. I explained i couldn't wait for another 30 minutes (my estimate not theirs) and they told me we could just cancel my order. This leaves me at 7:00 pm after a now 50 minute wait with no dinner for the family. Ok so thing happen and this is a small "Mom and pop" shop. What gets me was the lack of sympathy for the customer. The core competency of a restaurant is to serve food. When that doesn't happy, it is a fail. And in this fail, there was no real apology, offer of accommodation or solution other than leaving hungry. I am planning to stop by and talk to them more directly when i don't have a hungry and crying toddler with me. Hopefully, after that conversation I can upgrade back to 4 or 5 stars. Kimchi Pop was amazing! This was probably my first experience with Korean food and I'm so happy I decided to check them out! Great location, quality food, and friendly service. Plus, it's always a good feeling to support a local/small-owned business. My party and I even got to meet half of the owner duo, Kim, the daughter. You can tell she was so passionate about the food. It honestly felt like dining at your friends house with their mom fixing you dinner. And this place is BYOB. That's a win all around in my book! Even though everyone at the table loved their meal, I in particular, loved the chicken dumplings and the Bi Bim Bop. Oh and try the green tea, it's good for you and your taste buds. HORRIFIC CUSTOMER SERVICE. I ordered through Grub Hub and when my food was 15 minutes late, called the restaurant to check on my order. The lady on the phone started off super aggressive and informed me that they were running way behind and my order was one of them. When I let her know that this is really frustrating because I would not have ordered from their restaurant if I had known the delivery would be so long (on Grub hub it lets you know how long it will take to get to your house). She gave me the worst attitude, didn't try to apologize or do anything. One of the great few Korean restaurants in chicago that is actually affordable! I came here with a friend on a Saturday night and while it wasn't bustling when I entered at 6, the restaurant got progressively busier. I ordered the rice cake dumpling soup and was impressed by the authenticity of Korean flavors in the soup. It was very reasonably priced and left a great impression. The interiors are minimal and the tables are communal, so you'll have to be okay with sharing space with other people. This restaurant serves delicious Korean cuisine. Unquestionably one of the greatest Korean restaurants in the city for a formal sit-down meal. You get a lot of food for your money, and it's all very delicious. There was plenty of seating for our party of five and at first we were concerned that there would be no room for us because there were so many people in the restaurant, but the staff were attentive enough to notice us and politely accommodate us to available seats, and it wasn't just the service that was amazing, the food was also amazing, from the steak and Korean curry being beautifully seasoned and plentiful, to the Cheese Dakgalbi which was delicious and made of spicy chicken marinated in Korean gochujang sauce, stir-fried Overall, they offer a very nice environment, amazing and polite personnel, and delicious food that is created fresh to order and tastes like it was just eaten. Where to start! The food was delicious and flavorful. We ordered the bi bim bap & musubi. All of the vegetables tasted very fresh and the beef bulgogi was seasoned very well. The two bi bim bap sauces tasted very good. There was gochujang and a honey miso sauce for those that don't like spice. For those that are vegetarian/vegan, they have a list of menu items that can be made vegetarian or vegan! They also offer gluten free sauces as well. This place is absolutely delicious. Offering real deal Bibimbap that's fresh and prepared right. I tried the beef Bibimbap, chicken ramen, and chicken dumplings. Everything tasted great but, my favorite was the chicken ramen. It was so full of flavor and the noodles were cooked to perfection. I enjoyed the Bibimbap with all the fresh vegetables and the beef was good as well. The chicken dumplings were crispy and tasty with the chicken and veggie filling and sauce on the side. This is the best food delivery experience we've had since COVID life started 6+ months ago. The food was super fresh and hot (it helps that we live 5 minutes driving distance from the restaurant, but still, we were delighted) and was delivered quickly - actually a little early. Hands down the best Korean food in the city. Ultimate comfort food. Very COVID safe as everyone was wearing masks and social distancing. The kimchi stew and dumpling soup were so flavorful. This place is fantastic, plain and simple. The menu is rather limited, and some staples you'd expect at a Korean restaurant are missing... but you can bet that something is on the menu, it's done right. I could go through everything, but this review would be way longer than it needs to be. I've tried just about everything on it, and I have yet to be disappointed. They're also actively planning on adding to the menu, from what I understand. The last time we were there, the chef brought us out dishes that they were testing as potential menu items. Like the menu, the banchan is a smaller, more limited selection than usual, and what's available seems to rotate. That said, it's the best banchan I've had at any restaurant. I have to assume everything is made in-house. The kimchi tastes great and has a good kick to it. It's casual, and service is mostly self-serve, but they're always extremely friendly. Food comes out quick and freshly made. The chef/owner is constantly checking in and asking how everything is or coming out with re-fills on the banchan. I've eaten at a lot of Korean restaurants throughout Chicago and the suburbs, and something about Kimchi Pop sets itself apart. I'm happy to have it in the neighborhood. Oh, and it's BYOB. read more
