I've been a loyal customer since this place opened in 2017. I tell everyone about it. I come here often and order every weekend. I came in tonight, 10/25/24, by myself. I sat at the end of the bar and wanted to eat there and grab a drink or two. The male bartender was so rude. Didn't say hi. Didn't ask anything. I asked for my drink and he just looked at me like I was dumb. I asked " do you need id?" He's all " sure". He acted like I was annoying him or bothering him by being there. If you want poor service, and piss poor attitudes from staff, then this is the place for you We went here about two months ago. We were seated right away at the bar. The host told us the specific seats to take, however someone else came up and told us to move one seat down. A few minutes go by, and while I was looking through the menu, the host comes by to seat another couple. In the most unnecessarily loud and rude tone, the host says " I have to fill up the bar area. What are you doing? Move over and cram in". I was embarrassed to say the least. Furthermore, we were told by another meme we to move one seat down. In my opinion, there are better sushi restaurants in the area. Not to mention, the chefs preparing the food in front of us didn't seem to concerned with the cleanliness of their food stations. Don't even bother ordering any of the soups. Both the udon and ramen were pathetic. The broth is supposed to taste umami with so many depths of flavor. However, theirs tasted like water with a teaspoon of chicken stock. And I know people are going to say well who orders soup at a sushi restaurant. It's actually common and a good Japanese restaurant can specialize in both. If you can't specialize in both, simply remove it from your menu. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place. Just got our Uber eats order.. 2 entrees and 5 sushi rolls and while we got about 50 packets of soy sauce we got no wasabi.. when I called the restaurant the kid who answered said that we didn't check off that we wanted sauce or utensils... figured wasabi was standard considering when you go to most sushi restaurants you get soy and wasabi before you even order.. and if we didn't ask for it why did we get the 50 soy packets and 7 sets of sticks.. kid said I could drive down to the restaurant and he would give me some.. seriously... to make matters worse when I was explaining my situation he was like laughing on the phone.. kept saying sorry.. but was giggling while he was talking to me.. don't know what sucks more the little squid on the phone or the spot.. think it was how it was handled.. food was pretty good but didn't really enjoy it after the experience.. definitely will never patronize this place ever again... what a joke.. read more

Kimoto is delish. It's ALMOST a 5 stars for me but not quite. My husband and I tried A LOT when we stumbled here for a late night dinner. I was very excited to see a Japanese place open so late. His only gripe was, he said he would have liked his FULL soft boiled egg rather than just a half . We tried rolls and quite a few different apps and everything was fresh and flavorful and nicely presented. There were many rolls I wanted to try so we will def be back for that purpose alone. I did notice a lot of Rolls were spicy and since scallops are my favorite, I noticed not too many rolls with scallops on the menu. Took me a while to calm down. 5 weeks ago we went in to have a wonderful dinner, as our last was terrific. Again it wasn't crowded, no one was sitting at the bar tables so we sat down like we always have, it was Tuesday. She came over and tongue lashed my wife and I for seating ourselves. Thanks to our waitress who apologized and told us not to listen to her but that couldn't get us to what we were hoping for when we walked in the door. Food was good, service (waitress) was awesome. The rolls were delicious. The chicken skins and pork belly appetizers were good and brought out quickly. The salmon was tasty even though it has skin on it. I have to say after to much anticipation of coming here, we will not be coming back. Hubby and I have been a sushi fan "for years". We were both living in the San Jose, CA area until we moved to Modesto, CA. Unfortunately, the quality of restaurant is as different as night and day. Tonight, hubby asked if we should eat at Olive Garden or at Kimoto and w/o hesitation I said Kimoto. Definitely was better off at Olive Garden. I can only give two stars for a couple of reasons. 1) The provide good portion and 2) the Miso soup was good. Unfortunately everything else needs major improvements. When we first arrived, we could only sit at the sushi bar. All the booths were taken, which was a good thing for me so that I can observe the sushi preparation. The staff were too laxed. They were joking one another and even to the point of tossing food at each other. Another issue was while just about everyone was wearing "Kimoto" shirts, one person, to which I had issue with was wearing a "Thrasher" shirt, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. This same individual was the only one that was preparing food without wearing gloves. During our meal, we watched this person touch food AND touch his face. Btw, the purpose of the facemask is to cover the face not cover the chin. And from my observation, he did not have any beard either so I'm not sure the purpose of the facemask. What was the worse of the worse was my husband ordered the teriyaki chicken meal. There was raw piece of chicken. I just hope he didn't get food poisoning. However, I was impressed with my chicken katsu. The panko was light and the chicken was not dry. For this reason I could only give no more than 2 stars. Also, you don't serve medium grain rice in the meal. You serve the same rice as the rice on sushi rolls. I'm also not too keen on the servers touching the dish from the kitchen. I watched the server take the bowl of rice on the combo plate and flip it. All she had to do was ask the cook to flip the bowl for her so that she doesn't touch the food. Lastly, this was the first sushi restaurant we were charged for tea. SERIOUSLY??? When you go to an Italian restaurant, you get free bread. When you go to a Chinese restaurant, you get free hot tea. When you to go a Mexican restaurant, you get free tortilla chips and salsa. When you even go to an Indian restaurant, some provide free Naan bread but this place, we were charged $5.00 for hot tea. I told hubby, this was going to be our first and LAST time eating here. Normally, we would be going to our usual sushi restaurant in Turlock, CA. Advice to the owner: Visit a genuine sushi restaurant in the San Jose, CA area and observe the sushi chefs, the cooks, the servers, the ambiance. There is no horsing around, all staff members behind the counter observing food observes the health code (not touch face with the same hands handling food).
