6 months ago I would have given 5 stars . Katana has been our go to spot for lunch for years . Dinner dates were even better. Food is always amazing, service was also great . I don't know what's going on in there lately , the New server Luisa is plenty sweet , but she doesn't know anything about sushi , and isn't even old enough to serve/pour a beer, or any alcohol for that matter. Gave this place another chance. Was meeting a friend for dinner. Told them table for 2 and they said it would be 5 minutes. I sat there almost 10 minutes while they had tons of open seating. When sat, he asked about drinks and showed us the alcohol menu. We stated no alcohol today and he proceeded to tell is the cocktail special. I asked for a roll recommendation and he said he could help and would be back. He got our drinks and asked about apps or miso soup and my friend said she was ready to order and stated her order, but he didn't seem ready for it and said he would be back with the soup, we had said no to. Then finally the 3rd time he appeared took our order and I just ordered their special roll they had that day. My friend ordered a California roll and veggie tempura. She offered me the veggies that she didn't care for and I was surprised to see asparagus. As I ate it, I got to the bottom and was just gnawing on this thing. They didn't remove the woody part of the asparagus from either piece that I had and it was completely inedible. The batter itself was also pretty bland. My roll had spicy tuna on top and Sriracha, but also overall... I found it lacking. At $17.50 for a roll, I would expect a lot more. While our server was nice enough, I felt he was a little pushy and the way everything was handled from seating to ordering, I don't see myself returning. Attention TURLOCK DOGS BLUE CARD holders - I have the Turlock Dogs card and the coupon for this restaurant says it's buy one get one free. When I called to place on order over the phone, this establishment said it was for dine in only. No where on the card does it say that and the person on the phone said even though it doesn't say that on the card the manager said it's for dine in only. To be fair this should be stated on the card. This establishment is making rules up after the fact, when this card has been sold to people in the community. read more

We used to love this place, but unfortunately the quality and size of the rolls have decreased. The service is good, although the wait can sometimes be long. One thing I find a bit frustrating is that they charge a 20 percent gratuity for a party of one or more, which is not something I see often. When we went to pay at the front, we weren't told about this charge and ended up tipping the waiter as well, so we paid double gratuity without knowing. That information should be shared before a customer pays the bill. Unfortunately, we will not be returning. read more

The fish on the rolls have gotten smaller the quality of the rolls has gotten worse. They have been out of Unagi the last two times I've been there. A year ago YES service and food was great! Now the last two visits have been horrible service and marginal food. Dinning out is a treat and I'm not willing to drop that kind of $ for a maybe good maybe bad meal. We went here for our date night last night. We like to try different places. We had not had sushi in a while. The staff were very nice and our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and answered all of our questions my husband never had what we had for the appetizer and he asked how to eat it the food was delicious and reasonably priced. Fish was fairly fresh as far as I could tell. Mainly the focus is on the presentation rather than the quality. Service took a very long time for the food to arrive but they took my order fairly quickly. The tables were sticky as well and the AC seemed to not be running so it was very humid and muggy inside which wasn't too enjoyable. read more

We came here for my 15 year olds birthday. Inside tables were all taken, but we asked to sit outside if the heaters were on. They turned them on and cleaned off a table for us. The heaters worked really well and we weee very comfortable. Gio was our waiter and did a great job! He gave us great service! He recommended a certain soy sauce for my nigiri and it was really good. My ten year old son loved it too. All of our food was really good! It also came out in a decent amount of time. So Katana was in the naughty list from the last visit where the food was a no show. My daughter wanted Katana so I figured to give it a second chance. It's Friday night around 6pm and this place is empty. I counted seven empty tables and not to mention all the empty tables in their outdoor dining. No bueno. The waiter we had was super chill and attentive to our needs. I wish I would have got his name. I glanced over the menu and let's be honest here. Sushi is not cheap but sushi here at Katana is NOT cheap. The prices are seriously crazy. They don't compare to other sushi joints. I almost had to call my bank for a loan. Let me paint the picture. The wife ordered two rolls and both totaled just over $40 bucks. One of the rolls she ordered is nothing special. It is not even a specialty roll. The food did come out pretty fast which is a huge plus from the last visit. In the end, we had a great meal. The dragon roll is big. The spicy tuna hand roll is HuGE. Katana if you're monitoring your Yelp reviews, you must knock the prices down. If your rent is too expensive, move to another spot. Your patrons will follow good sushi. Came in tonight with the kids at 7:45 pm. Waiter seats us in the middle of the restaurant. I kindly asked to be seated on the side of the restaurant and the waiter said "do you mind if I ask why?" uhhh BECAUSE!?!? The waiter rushes over to our table and asks if we know what we want to eat, I haven't had a chance to even look at the menu and he states that the kitchen is closing soon so we have to order now. I gather up a quick order and put it in including edamame as an appetizer. Not knowing that everything I ordered has tempura in it, and I am gluten intolerant. The edamame never came and I asked for it and did not receive the kindest response. He was the only waiter in the whole restaurant this night and I understand he was busy, but he seemed to be super kind to everyone else. Meanwhile, several other parties came in 20 minutes after we sat down, so I'm not sure why we were rushed to order. Miso soup was pure salt, and God forbid we asked for more water after eating this salt lick soup. My daughter dropped her chopsticks so I went to the front to look for some to help the guy out and I got reprimanded. However, he did have time to chit chat with the other tables. I spent quite some time picking out the tempura out of the rolls. Keep in mind he brought my kids katsu chicken instead of teriyaki and got visibly pissed when I let him know. We kept one order of katsu, I'm not stupid enough to send it back and receive another blessed order from a frustrated staff. Edamame was packed with salt too. Sushi was great, service was exceptional. Brandon took care of us in a very personal and warm manner, and I noticed the other waiters/waitresses doing so as well in various ways for their tables. Was nice to break through the professional barrier and feel like a friend was serving us dinner. We got the Philadelphia roll two ways, one regular the other tempura fried, both were delicious. I was in town visiting and my dad brought us here. First and foremost I don't want to exclude the service, because it was impeccable and top tier and SUPER ACCOMMODATING! The food would get a 3 star review I would give the service 5 so I opt to rate this restaurant - a 4. Ambiance was good and it was super clean and not busy when we arrived although it picked up once we ordered. I usually only eat yellowtail but the waiter let us know they were out. Which was a huge bummer bc that's when things started to go down hill a bit. He suggested a salmon sashimi with the ponzu (razor hamachi) it wasn't delightful and super fishy. We ordered the spicy garlic edamame and they were rarely well just slightly overcooked where they would mush a bit. My mom ordered the chicken teriyaki and I give that a 5 star her plate made me jealous so whatever she didn't finish I ate off her plate, so good! Tried a cucumber the no rice roll and it wasn't on menu but I seen it on yelp as I always look at pictures to help my judgement on ordering. Unfortunately my no rice roll came with ZERO SAUCE. Could have used some spicy mayo and the eel sauce on it, I think that would have been a game changer! The photo of the no rice roll looks delicious on their page but mine came without the sauces. My dad had the 15 assorted fish with the rice bowl he loved his plate. Crispy tuna came plane. It missed the sauce, and could have used the traditional jalapeño on top and dot of sirachi on each one. Are waiter was literally 5 star and he did all he could do and I didn't want to come off as a complaining unhappy customer. He did take things off the table but we opt to tip more because that's not what are concern was. I was contemplating leaving this review, as this is one, if not the only sushi spot we visit in Turlock. Review is based on service only. We went last week and were seated quickly and given menus. However, we waited approximately 20-25 minutes and we were still not even acknowledged or offered any drinks. I understand times can get busy, but a simple acknowledgment or "thank you for waiting" goes a long way. Then we noticed a couple who arrived after us were attended first.
