Last night was our first time at this establishment and we were extremely impressed by the selection of rolls, the decent price point and the amazing service by the staff. We were celebrating my wife's 40th birthday and I had brought a cake in earlier in the day for them to bring out after dinner as a surprise. Kristi was our server and she made sure our overall experience was top notch. The sushi was better than average and I won't say the it's the best I've ever had just because we recently moved for the Bay Area and have become spoiled but it was really good sushi. While we couldn't make reservations because our party was too small, they offer plenty of tables and we were seated right away. This place has changed several times over the years I have been going here. Most recently they have changed the decorations to a lot more relaxed with banners and screenings along with Japanese music and dinner lights. The sushi did have a downswing after their main chef left, but has become much better this year after a bit of a slump, going back to being fresh with good ingredients. Kristi is an excellent waitress and is always friendly when she is there as well. If you go during g lunchtime, it can be rather unpredictable if there's going to be a crowd or almost deserted, although it does tend to become busier after 1 PM. I particularly enjoy their Ika Karage when I go as a snack, and the food comes out pretty quickly as long as you don't hit the lunch crowd. read more

Visited Okawa April 29th and upon entering the place was very clean and I was greeted immediately by the nice hostess. I ordered a California Roll and another Specialty roll which I have forgotten the name of but it was very delicious. The sushi tasted fresh. Came here on a Tuesday night right before 5 pm. A few tables had patrons already and got even busier by 530 pm. Decided to mix things up and try their ramen. Chose tonkatsu ramen with black garlic with cha su. The broth was pretty good. Had simple ingredients of bamboo shoots , shitaki mushrooms, one soft boiled egg and garlic of course besides the noodles. Bowl size was pretty large and had lots of noodles. So much that I couldn't even eat the dragon roll we ordered. I give the ramen a solid 4.5 score and would get again when I'm craving something other than sushi. My wife had the salmon teriyaki. Simple presentation with rice and gyoza. Overall. It was a nice meal. It's not my top Japanese restaurant but solid place to eat. read more

Switched up a Modesto sushi spot. It's in a newer shopping center so it's super clean inside & modern. Good service & lots of choices. Myself & my husband were not disappointed! We got spicy edamame and three rolls. They tasted fresh & were well made. Thought the Phoenix was going to be the favorite but it was actually our least favorite (was always rank our food lol). I absolutely love the teriyaki salmon here. It's not overly sweet like some are and it comes on a bed of onions which I just adore. Delicious! They were seriously understaffed today which made things mega slow (hence the loss of a star) but the lady who was running around serving all the tables, bringing drinks, answering phones, and dealing with takeout orders was a rock star. Tried this place for the 2nd time with family and we all loved it. I did not have the Sashimi but I've seen plenty of bowls and this one had huge slices and was told it was good. The Hibachi was decent, chicken was a little tough so not the best but the steak was tender and delicious. The rice as a serving was a little hard so also needing a little help to perfect. Mic had teriyaki chicken and again it was dry/tough inside. The flavor was on point though. No pictures for the sushi, apologies, and these were perfect. We had Cherry Blossom, Hotel Ca, and Rock n Roll. Definitely will be back and try some other rolls. Waitress was nice and service was great. The place is quiet and clean and a nice vibe for dinning. 10/5 stars if I could!! We booked a large table to celebrate my friend. Service was amazing. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. We brought a cake and they let us put it in the fridge. We had a candle to put on it, but they added on extra candles they even play their own birthday song over the speaker?! Amazing. I finally found my favorite sushi spot in town. Service is always great and attentive. It gets pretty busy for dinner but the food is delish! Their fried rice is the best fried rice I've ever had, so simple yet so delish. I've gone twice and tried different rolls each time. Golden Phoenix: would order this again and again! We got the fried oysters, California roll, Crouching tiger roll, and the Rock n Roll. The following is a review of a salad. I ordered the Steak Salad and I'm very disappointed. The website has no description of this item, and neither did Yelp. What I received was a few ounces of unseasoned char-burnt steak. Sliced, over a bed of iceberg lettuce with no dressing in sight. No seasoning or any sauce on the entire dish. This in no way resembles a salad, other than lettuce under the meat. Amazing service and to-die-for tempura! I have not had one bad thing here, that I have personally tried. The wait staff are always coming around asking if we're good, automatically refilling water glasses, and friendly. I was very impressed. Daughter wanted sushi for her birthday dinner so I brought her here. We were in the Modesto area and this seemed to have the best reviews. It was a nice comfortable place and all the workers seemed nice. I will say when we first got there it took awhile for someone to come take our order. Not sure if they were just understaffed or what. But once we were able to order the food didn't take too long to come out. I will say that all the food and sushi we had were very good and satisfying! The waitress even brought my daughter a nice dessert for her birthday! If I ever want good sushi that is a decent price I know where to go now! This place is fantastic! This is our favorite sushi spot in Modesto. We usually start with the calamari and dynamite mussels, and the dynamite mussels are excellent. Highly recommended. They didn't put cucumber into the California rainbow roll and they filled it with crab meat so I have it a 4 instead of 5. The soup was good, the miso soup was good and so was the hibachi. Hopefully they add it in the future to add some crunch to the sushi. read more

So we came back as we really enjoyed this place because is very close to our home and it was really good last time. Tempura was ok last time and so was the salad dressing, place down the street beats them on that. We ordered the unagi rice bowl, dragon roll, and Tonkatsu Ramen. The Unagi is so delicious but it comes with some pickled veggies that just not my taste or the wife's. The ramen was very good, specially the broth we like that style to have more garlic and powder spice so we will bring our own next time and then it will be fire, brith very rich and flavorful on its own just our preference. The dragon roll was also very good and overall this place is a solid 4. Very busy and our waiter was trying his best, young man obviously learning ropes but he did a good job. Last time we had the stone hit plate which was surprisingly good since typically that never gets hot enough to sear your components, we had chicken. I also had some other random chef choice sashimi with was fresh and fantastic. Can't believe my picture of the dragon roll was lost on the other dimension but oh well.....next time. Cool ambiance, large and spacious, tables are well separated from each other so it's loud if it's crowded but your not packed in there next to other guests. I believe this place has some great sushi and for a reasonable price. It's decently big and very nice looking inside. Since it is located in a newer shopping area is very well kept. The service is pretty good, the servers great you as soon as they can, but maybe have the chefs at the sushi bar acknowledge a customer walking in would help or make you feel more welcomed. Other than that the service is good. Now for the food. For reference I've only really ordered sushi, as in rolls and anything raw. I've been here a few times to know they're quite consistent with their food and quality. I have yet to taste any really fishyness from the raw sushi I've ordered. I've ordered the boats and some individual nigiri pieces and they're all really good. The reason for 4 stars is because they advertise they have UNI but don't really get it in. Also the portion of rice on nigiri pieces could be less. They give you a lot of rice to fish ratio. If you're ever in the area and crave some sushi. Come and try this place out.
