Kimoto has become our go to Japanese restaurant ever since my previous fav Japanese place owners had retired. We came around 8:44 pm on a Friday night and they still accepted us to dine in but had to sit at the sushi bar which was fine. I had the chicken teriyaki dinner plate and upgraded to the vegetable tempura at an extra charge with steam rice (though you can get fried rice. My wife got the chicken katsu dinner and vegetable tempura also. Dinner plate comes with salad and miso dressing- which is a bit like thousand island in color and taste. As well as miso soup. Reason this is my go to Japanese restaurant is I like how their chicken teriyaki is cooked. It's basically char grilled , dark meat which gives it the best flavor. And the teriyaki sauce is a bit thicker and stays on the meat compared to another Japanese place I've reviewed that I didn't like their watery sauce. Service was great. They didn't rush us to finish our food and our waiter informed us about the kitchen closing in 10 mins and asked if we wanted anything else. So that was nice. Overall, definitely recommend this place if you like to order chicken teriyaki. My wife's katsu looked good and she enjoyed what she ordered. read more

My husband and I frequent this place at least twice a month (I'd go every single day if I could). It's our favorite sushi joint. The staff is great! The food is even better! We always take advantage of their free miso soup. If you go early, you can catch some decent lunch specials, too! For appetizers, we always go with fried chicken gyoza, avocado bombs, or jalapeño poppers that have crab and a delicious tempura coating. SO GOOD. For sushi rolls, our favorite ones are the deep-fried holiday roll, Japanese mafia, endless summer, chicken teriyaki roll, and Fuji mountain. You must ask for a side of unagi sauce and spicy mayo! Yum! The restaurant is always clean, service is quick, and we have never had a bad meal. It took me a while to figure out what to get, so I opted for the house salad and a cold tea while I decided. The menu is expansive and to my delight had a re occurring theme of fresh scallops. Traditional to fusion you will find what you are looking for. Eventually my eyes finally decided what my mouth was to enjoy, The Japanese Mafia roll. Cream cheese and crab meat, topped with flame seared salmon, and a collection of all the house sauces. Topped w Tobico and scallions. Absolutely love this sushi restaurant! It is my favorite one to go to in Modesto! The staff is always accommodating and the food and sushi are amazing! When we can we sit at the sushi bar and the service is fantastic. They do get busy like any other restaurant and it does slow down a bit but nothing out of the normal. Highly recommend!!! read more

Prices were very reasonable and the place was slightly busy for a Sunday evening during the holidays. The wait was only 10-ish minutes, so it was very quick. Now let's get to the sushi. It was just...ok. Sorry! It didn't seem like it was freshly made and it just didn't have an authentic taste to it. Every dang time. I told my wife to stop going here. Always loosely wrapped, and the tuna is cut into 2 pieces in my first bite. This place has gone downhill over the last few years.
