I stopped by Kim's Fish Market (10004 Avalon Blvd.) and came away impressed. Don't let the location fool you--yes, it's in the hood, and honestly, that's part of what gives this spot its character. If you're ever on this side of town, just grab your food and go rather than hanging around to eat. I ordered the fried red snapper lunch special, and it was cooked perfectly. The fish was crispy on the outside, flaky and juicy on the inside, and seasoned just right. The meal came with fries, bread, and a hush puppy, plus they hooked me up with tartar sauce and hot sauce. I also grabbed a drink and finished it off with a slice of cheesecake. They also had homemade desserts available, including banana pudding, chocolate cake, and another in-house dessert that all looked tempting. What really stood out was how clean the place was. Despite the neighborhood, the inside was spotless, and everyone working there was friendly, welcoming, and efficient. My food was fresh, hot, and ready in about 15 minutes, so I was in and out with no hassle. If you're looking for great fried fish at a fair price, don't let the address scare you away. Note to self: DONT DO IT! This review really breaks my heart. I really didn't want to report back with such disappointing findings but in the spirit of managing expectations it's more beneficial to express this. How did Kim's Fish enter my World? I would NEVER typically deviate from my usual spot (Imperial Fish Market), but Kim's Fish World is the only fish fry market open on Sundays and I was starving on my way back from a charity thing about 20 minutes away from this location. It sounded worth the risk. It wasn't. I specified, "extra seasoning and extra crispy". Lesson learned. The fish was not seasoned like, AT ALL... I suppose the method here is to only season the batter opposed to seasoning the fish itself this makes a whirlwind of a difference! Secondly, extra crispy is achieved by adding additional batter. At least it was cooked appropriately because the batter wasn't falling off the fish thankfully, yet it was crunchy either. No bueno. I could deal with the whole texture thing but as my trusted yelpers know, I AM a TASTE FREAK and when exchanging money for food it seems unfortunate to have sub par experiences... *whomp whomp whomp* I suppose I paid for the learning curve. My first question for any fried fish joint will now be "do you season the batter or the fish too?" LOL. Though, my expectations were reasonable and I didn't take a bite to compare it to my favorite fish market, I did have the hope that the fish (not the batter alone) would be seasoned. Especially when it was communicated during the ordering process. I'd rather curb the craving until it can be satisfied from the very best fried fish joint imaginable. Why settle for less? read more

I stopped by this fish market first thing Sunday morning, and it was so fire. I ordered one piece of fried snapper and five jumbo shrimp--both were packed with flavor. The sauces on the side were on point, and they even included two fresh lemon wedges, which was a nice touch. I'm not from the area, but I'll definitely be back. The service was great, and while the shop itself is pretty simple, it was super clean. The gentleman who took my order was really helpful and explained how their setup works, you can buy fresh fish to-go, pick something from the front case to have it fried, or grab pre-bagged pieces they have ready. This time I arrived when there was ample parking I felt led to go ahead and park in the parking lot RIGHT IN FRONT since there weren't hardly any cars and didn't see any folks hanging all out. I met Sam who I inquired about whether their telephones worked or not... Sam explained their phone was working and I shared that I called before coming and their was AGAIN no answer... If you're a fan of tartar sauce with your fried fish then this is your spot! Fish had perfect amount of seasoning which wasn't greasy and the tartar sauce to go with it was just TOO BOMB! What a pleasant surprise to be greeted with a smile and patience by Ms. Lucy. She seriously needs a tip jar. Her attitude was inviting and she lead by example. I am so satisfied with this location.
