It's been a while since my last visit, and one change was immediately apparent. The overhead menu above the front counter is gone. You now order from a kiosk menu, which has photos, descriptions, and current prices. It was quick and easy. I ordered Ye Beg Alicha, which the menu describes as a lamb soup. I would refer to it as a stew, exactly what I was hoping for. It was a large serving of many, small pieces of lamb, in a spiced, buttery stew and comes with a small salad. It was delicious. My husband had the veggie platter, which came with Cabbage Wot (cabbage, plus a few carrots and potatoes), Miser Wot (spicy red lentil stew), Gomen Wot (collard greens), Shiro Wot (chickpea stew), Kik Alicha (mild split pea stew), and a small salad. He's not a big fan of collard greens, but ate and enjoyed everything. He found the Miser Wot particularly spicy, which he appreciated. Both our entrees were served on a large piece of Injera, and also came with 3 rolled up Injera pieces. We both love their Injera, which has a perfect sour flavor, and the texture of 100% teff. It takes a while to get the food, but I like the fact that that means they cook from scratch with fresh ingredients. As mentioned, Injera (darker and sourer than other Ethiopian restaurants we tried) is a good example. My beloved Abyssina Ethiopian restaurant across the street has been sold to a new owner. I knew about Kind Bean Cafe by visiting one time before and thought it was pretty good. They have now become my go to place for Ethiopian when I am in the Sacramento area. We were warmly greeted when we arrived and placed our order at the counter. They also serve breakfast, speciality coffees and a variety of drinks. We ordered the veggie platter, gored gored and chicken tibs. Absolutely delicious!!! The shiro was the best I have had in a long time. Everything was hot and fresh. The dressing on the salad really stood out and the leaves were nice and crispy. The restaurant is small but welcoming. You sit where you would like. After placing your order and paying at the counter, and they will bring the food out to you. Kind Bean Cafe is located in a small strip mall. I highly recommend. Everything is so fresh and delicious. The injera, a fermented sourdough flatbread, is spongy and so delicious with a unique taste! And did you know that teff is a very healthy grain? And don't be shy, use your hands, tear off a small piece of the bread, wrap up some stew, and enjoy! If there are two or more of you, the staff may ask if you want to have everything on one plate. Say yes unless you really don't want to. This is how food is traditionally served, diners gathering around a large platter to share various stews and salads, sometime offering a morsel to an honored guest or loved one. A beautiful tradition of sharing, caring and bonding. The place is not fancy, but it's very bright and clean. A shame though there's no fancy setup for making coffee the traditional way... the coffee comes in a paper cup like anywhere else. read more

Ive officially tried all Ethiopian, African restaurants in Northern California. I will rarely leave reviews anymore unless a deserving restaurant needs attention or the current standing needs correction. Unfortunately I bookmarked this place because ratings were high but it was lacking in almost all areas: customer service, ambience and food. Tried the vegetarian combo plate but Holy spicy Batman, 3 out of 5 were way too spicy like at a 3 Alarm level. This cook doesn't like vegetables because they feel they need to add shit load of chili to cover up real vegetable flavors. Too bad, the cabbage was the only vegetable dish that was good and like typical Ethiopian food is supposed to be. I've never seen or tasted other dishs prepared the same way elsewhere as they do here. Spinach is spicy here, not elsewhere, lentils are half cooked here. As for the other brown mush, it's extremely spicy and inedible. While asking for add on, ala carte, this woman wasn't willing to accommodate. No one is asking for free but not willing to accept an extra order off menu isn't the smartest business decision. Lastly their overhead menu prices aren't up to date and I wasn't told so. I asked after I was charged why the price discrepancy and she simply said the overhead menu isn't up to date. Well yes it costs money to update so invest in a monitor where you can adjust the price easily, but this needs to be done because it's dishonest to your customers! I live about 30 minutes away. Went here during normal business hours (6pm on a Saturday night -- restaurant hours on website say they close at 7:30 pm). I wanted to try something new and this spot definitely stood out. Ethiopian food and a cafe all in one. I noticed people came in for drinks and food but I wanted to try their most popular dishes. I got the veggie platter that had 5 different veggie preparations, that I can't say correctly, on a flat bread. The veggies were cooked down and still had flavor. The flat bread is soft and spongey. I also got the beef stew that came with rolled flat bread. The stew was dark and had a deep unique flavor. Eating everything together made for the best bites. Some meat, veggie, and soft flatbread enhanced the Ethiopian spices and the flavors were very unique. The only downside is the portions are small and they literally can put your whole meal on one big plate. Definitely recommend this spot if you are looking to experience something new! read more

This was a great neighborhood coffee shop with a twist. I really enjoy Ethiopian food and their coffee is always freshly made. Although on this encounter, I did not partake in the food the smells really had me engaged and wanting to take a plate home. I ordered the Ethiopian macchiato and it was very delicious. Superb food and incredible staff. Each and every time I eat here the food seems to get better and better. The vegan platter is just delicious and not overwhelming. Glad we stepped out of our comfort zone and gave this place a try! It was our first time trying Ethiopian food so we played it safe and ordered one plate. It was delicious! The stew reminded us of Mexican mole! It did come with only one chicken leg so if you like a lot of meat I would maybe recommend ordering extra. The food here is amazing!!!! It seems to be family owned and operated. A couple of sweet ladies take your order and bring your food. I hate a matcha latte which was good and not too strong. Just right like mama bears chair. We had the sample plate with 5 different vegetable dishes and a lamb stew in the middle. The 2 of us could not finish this. It was so good but so filling. SERVICE: Service was excellent. The owner(?) took our order and was super nice and attentive. Our kids didn't like the Injera so we ordered a bagel with cream cheese. Since they didn't have bagels on hand, she made a sandwich with cream cheese. She didn't charge us because it was "for the kids". We insisted on paying but she ended up not charging us in the end. FOOD: - Chickpea gravy/stew - Soo delicious. It's kind of like a very very flavorful hummus (but better) - full of spices like paprika, berbere, etc. - Lamb tibs - good in the beginning but it started to overcook on the iron plate. Next time we'll remove it from the iron plate immediately and move it onto the injera disc. - Doro wot (Ethiopian chicken stew) was decent. The chicken could use more flavor. The stew/gravy was better than the chicken. Portion was a bit small with a decent amount of gravy but 1 drumstick and 1 egg. VIBE: Kind Bean Cafe seems to be a fixture in the Ethiopian community! A good number of customers seemed to know the owner. We'll definitely come back and looking forward to ordering the vegetarian sampler! Note: If you've never been to an Ethiopian place, you would generally order some mains and they come out on top of a very big circular Injera. Wishy-washy between 3 and 4 stars but I'll give it the 4 because of the positive vibes from the lady at the counter (she was pretty excited that I was going to try the food here). A couple of hiccups staff-end on my Yelp/Grubhub takeout order. I arrived here when I was notified by the system that my order was ready but turned out that my order hadn't even started yet (fortunately I wasn't in any rush to leave at the time of my visit). Also, I ordered a mocha latte but was instead given a matcha latte (I'm guessing the lady misread the order). Anyway, what was right was the veggie platter. The softest (while still being sturdy) injera that I've had! Also, the veggie dishes in the platter were all terrific (albeit the split peas in the kik alicha could've been a little softer). So flavorful and hearty. All-around great comfort food and I wouldn't be surprised if staff insistently take home the leftover food in the kitchen at the end of each day lol. Definitely recommend this platter especially if you've never tried Ethiopian food, which IMO is a very underrated cuisine (by ordering this platter you get to sample most of the vegetarian offerings here though the misir wot in particular does have some mild spice to it so keep that in mind)! I also ordered a pistachio baklava for dessert. Just alright baklava. Kinda heavy on the syrup glaze and the pistachio bits were a bit too chunky. The best Ethiopian in town. I really love Ethiopian food and these folks do it really well! My favorite is Doro Wat, which I have made myself. It's chicken, hard boiled egg and a spicey sauce. The chicken should be tender enough that it falls off the bone and that is the case here. You eat it by tearing injera bread and using it as a grasping tool to keep your fingers from getting gooey. Absolutely delicious! The only detractor about this place is that they don't serve beer, which would be the perfect accompaniment to the zest of the Doro Wat. I'll make that sacrifice for food this good. They'll see me again! read more

K ma and I was meeting for some coffee, but then it was around lunch time so we had both. I wanted to try this place for a while so glad we got to come here finally. . Things we ordered. . Chicken tibs- first the meat is halal. The chicken was moist. Chicken was flavorful. We both loved it. . Half veggie options- collard greens was flavorful. Chicken peas was blended smooth with spices and tasted really good and flavored really well. . Dulet lamb innards - I loved it. It tasted authentic with spices. She did warn it was spicy but it was mild. I really liked it. . Injera - the bread is your regular spongey type bread. It was good. . We got the fluffy flakey pastry like baklava with stuffed pistachio for dessert. It was missing some sweetness to it. Like a punch of honey maybe would have done it. It went well with the coffee. . Traditional ethiopian coffee - presentation it was served in a tray with 2 coffee cups like for the size of an espresso. Came with sugar and steamed cream. Burned an incense for us too. We tried drinking it black but it was too strong, so we mixed in with cream and sugar and it was amazing. Towards the end of the coffee you can taste the fine grind coffee like sand, it is edible but we are not use to it so we stopped when it got too thick at the end with sand texture. Feeds 2 to 3 people and it cost 15 bucks. Service was slow. We waited for a while but it was worth it. It's a one person cooking so it will take time. I do like how everything is prepared fresh and diced right away. You can feel the love in the cooking. It was welcoming to come into the restaurant and good service with asking how the food is. . Price point for dishes were pricey but with quality and made with love. The traditional coffee in a pot with 2 little coffee cups and steamed milk, with incense lit and all served in a tray was very bougie and elegant. The coffee was good and strong. It cost 15 bucks, but feeds 2 to 4 people easily. Coffee was more like a family style. It was a vibe and an experience. . Food price, I may have been spoiled on my dc trip in East coast with tons of Ethiopian restaurants that I don't remember this pricey and limited on options. So when I was ordering I felt limited but with a hefty price tag. Basically I wanted injera on the bottom with a few choices of veggies, I like a variety and textures and colors. In the middle I would like a main entree. But then it would cost like 35 bucks for what I wanted. So I changed It to the way it comes. So I got the dulet aka lamb innards with injera bread and a salad with it for like 16.99. Plus the 15 dollar traditional ethiopian coffee it was like 35 bucks and up for one person. . Verdict- yes I would come back. I loved the food. The flavor was really well seasoned. We both loved the casual vibe in here. The coffee is what we both really liked. Some things that needs improvement is the speed for the food and drinks to come out. The bathroom was kinda messy and needed more well kept and organized.
