I'd been wanting to hit up Kind Bean for a while and finally had the opportunity to try them out for dinner. The ambiance is average, but the ladies working the counter (and making the food!) were very welcoming. I ordered the Veggie Platter, and my husband ordered the Doro Wot (chicken stew). The veggie platter was delicious, especially the Shiro Wot. The injera was also spongey and fresh. The platter would have been enough for us to share for sure. The reason I gave 3 stars is mainly due to the portion size of the Doro Wot (the plate in the middle). For the price of an entree, it only came with one small drumstick and an egg. The second thing worth mentioning was the fact that the bathroom was dirty. There's one loose paper towel roll resting on the lid of the toilet, and it looks as if everyone has grabbed it. Despite this, the food is solid. I'd definitely come back and have more Shiro Wot, plus try out some of their coffee drinks. read more

Our first time there celebrating a birthday. We arrived and I asked if the dish I was ordering was spicing given the "fresh chili's" in the ingredients, I was informed it was not spicy at all. I received the food, the dish was very spicy. I had my son taste it (who love's spicy) and he said yeah thats very spicy. I tried his meal and it was not spicy at all. I brought the dish to our server and stated it's too spicy, she said, its not spicy, I said, yes, it's spicy and she started laughing at me and said she would give me the cabbage dish. I'm not a fan of cabbage, so I said Ill pick something else out. She said "no the whole menu would be too spicy for you and I will give you your money back." So I had nothing to eat, while everyone else ate. Our drinks arrived after our meal was over, even after asking with our meal 1/2 finished. The dish I did try was bland. The injera did not stand out. I love Ethiopian food, I have no idea what was going on, especially given all the great reviews. All 3 of us work or have worked in culinary or service industry. The whole experience was odd to the point of absurdity, thus we decided to refresh our pallet and hit Leatherby's down the street, which warmly welcomed us with Puff the Magic Dragon music at the entrance. I think she was the owner, she asked me if I've had Ethiopian food before and I said no. Prices were reasonable. I decided to just have a matcha chai and a bagel with lox. Restaurant was mainly run by 2 generous and welcoming ladies when we entered. This is a legit Five Star Yelp restaurant. If you want to try Ethiopian food in Sacramento, there is just Kind Bean Cafe and a couple other places. The others are very good but KBC is like having a personal chef preparing your made to order meal. It is prepared with lots of heart and soul and is the most delicious tasting food ya can get outside of having your mom's cook'n. The staff was so friendly, and kind, and the food was by far the best Ethiopian food I've ever had.
