The VW is now at 135,000 miles, King Auto has provided service over 92,000 of those miles. The owner has always been gracious and helpful. He's always advised things to watch out and plan for. Typically can see me same day, if the bays are occupied, I'll return as he's available. Only a few times, I'd leave the auto and return upon completion. I refer friends and clients. Johnny screwed us. Hard. Brought car in to get valve cover gaskets replaced as they where leaking. Saw oil coming out by the spark plug holes and brought it back to him. He blames it on the parts which he told us to buy (New valve covers and gaskets). Wants me to buy a another new valve cover this time from a Jeep dealer and redo the job at my expense. I bring it to another shop for second opinion. Find out not only is it leaking at the spark plug holes but at each valve cover where it bolts to the head towards rear of engine. So it's leaking on both sides and at the spark plug holes. One side worse than the other. Turns out they left out one of the bolts!!!! Tried calling him and texted him pictures of location where bolt was missing and valve cover leaking. He refused to listen and blamed it on the parts and would not stand behind his work or offer refund. Stay away from this shop!! We told each other to F*** off on the phone and that was the end of any business I will ever do with King Auto Repair. Read through all their reviews. They have a common theme where they ask you to provide the parts and then blame the parts when there is a problem with the repair. They provide no warranty and do not stand behind their work. Attached is picture where the bolt was missing and oil leaking. Imagine how bad a mechanic you are if you leave out one of the bolts on a valve cover. Incompetent. Negligent. Obviously didn't check over work. Believe me, you don't want to have an experience like I did with this shop. These are the guys that give mechanics a bad reputation. Stay away, stay far away. I took my suv there to have the brakes checked. The owner checked all 4 wheels and said the front were ok but the rear were worn out. He suggested I get the pads since he wasn't sure how quick they could deliver and he would gladly replace them shortly. But we're looking at intricate electrical, transmission or engine work then you'll need a top-tier mechanic like H&H automotive, or if you're desperate...a dealership. If I could give 0 stars I would. Went into shop on 3/11 and was told there was water in gas tank and fuel pump($450.00) needed to be replaced. Brand new fuel punk was put in and then told the car is ready for pickup on 3/13. Picked the car up and drove less than 5 miles when my car completely shuts off on me. Called Jonny and he gave me a jump and told to come back to shop to take a look. Upon looking over the car he tells me it's now the alternator that is causing the car to not crank(i.e was never told the alternator was bad from him when the car was initially brought in, nor was the alternator defective when I took the car into the shop the first time) he tells me I need a new alternator($350). I asked Johnny is he 100% sure the issue is the alternator before one is ordered to avoid spending more money on something that isn't going to resolve the issue. He assured me the alternator would fix the problem. He gets the new alternator which he then puts on the car. Once put on he comes to tell me the brand new alternator is defective and will need to have another one put in to resolve the issue so he orders another and puts that in. STILL DOESNT WORK! He then proceeds to say I will have to leave the car ANOTHER day so he can find the issue. I go into the shop on 3/14 assured the car is up and running and all issues have been resolved. I was happy to know I was able to drive the car off the lot and then I proceeded to get gas. While driving I notice my dash board lights are not on AT ALL! I can't tell how fast I'm going nor can I use my turn signals. I bring the car back to Jonny ONCE AGAIN to be told that it's now the "ECU" and that would need to be replaced($150). Keep in my none of these things were defected prior to 3/11 when it was brought into this shop so now it's another part that needs to be brought. At this point I was very frustrated that almost $1000 was spent and my car still is having an issue I was told to "shut up" and was told to lose my attitude because of this frustration of being told a new issue with my car EVERYTIME I was told it was "ready for pickup". I do not recommend this place AT ALL. Terrible customer service and lack of empathy from the owner. I was referred by a long time customer so very disappointed Johnny acted in such a manner. Will take my money to a more reliable and respectful mechanic. read more

If I could give this place more than 5 Stars - I definitely would. I decided to stay over at my boyfriend's apartment complex right in the heart of NoDa over the Halloween weekend to partake in fun festivities and as we all know, there is pretty much ONLY street parking available in the vicinity. Per the usual, I park my car and leave it there for the duration of my stay and we just trolley around his car while mine is seemingly safely parked. Spoiler Alert: THIS WASN'T THE CASE. I am a lucky son-of-a-gun whose little cute toyota got hit pretty badly. Thank you Mr/Mrs Hit-and-Run @$$h0le. (Yes, I am still angry about it) From the outside, the superficial damage wasn't too bad but my car was completely undriveable. Based on Yelp, the vicinity of where I was and USAA's awesome app that lets me grab a tow, I quickly called King's Auto and they were more than receptive of my situation, my car and my despair. (I was definitely loosing my cool) Johnny - the owner - has it down pact. He told me everything that I needed to hear (They specialize in Toyota's, they work with USAA adjuster's if needed and more). He even told me that I didn't have to come to the repair shop, I could just stay at my boyfriend's apt and would call me with his findings and estimates. He didn't want my idly sitting at his waiting room for nada. I appreciated that so very much. True to his word, he called me every time there was an update to my situation and a little over 24 hours after the incident, my car is good as new. I am truly so grateful that I happened to meet Johnny and his team despite the dire situation. They were the light in this whole ordeal. He truly made what is usually an awful situation very easy and accommodating. Lastly - because of the type of repair and parts needed for my vehicle, I was expecting to pay close to a grand but the prices were very reasonable. Most genuine experience I've evereverever had. Usually I feel depressed walking out of a car shop knowing that I got played or ripped off. Nothing like that with King's. I DEFINITELY recommend King's Auto Repair in Plaza. I had a great experience at King's Auto. I needed to have my oil changed and a tune up. I thought I needed my transmission fluid replaced also (~$300+ job). Johnny firs told me he would check if it needed 1/2 or full change. then called me and explained it didn't need to be changed at all. He easily could have done nothing and charged me the $160 for the Transmission change but was honest. I would definitely come back here again, and recommend if you are looking for an honest opinion! read more

Apparently, I like King Auto Repair more than dealing with signing into Yelp- so that's a pretty good start for K.A.R. (clever!). My brakes on a Ford F150 1999 was making grinding sounds from the wheels. I took it in, and Johnny on the spot noticed the wear in the pads, and replaced them all. We were going to reschedule for the next day, but when Johnny realized I pull a large coffee trailer with the truck during the day, he scheduled me in immediately, and I was out of there in less than 45 minutes. Really great service. He even wants me to come back in 1-2 months to see how the brake caliber is working out; he thinks he fixed it (for free) but wants to be sure. Thanks! edit: typo read more

Decided to stop in after being referred by a few guys from AutoZone. I badly needed mounts (motor and trans axle) replaced. I ordered the parts at AutoZone and I just needed the labor done. Not really a lot of parking but I made due. The owner, Johnny, wasn't super nice and just seemed to be a man of few words. He told me it would be a 3-4 hour wait since he had other cars ahead and there was only 1 mechanic available. I needed my car that day so I told him I'll just wait. The lobby is a hot ass mess. Old furniture, dusty, no wi-fi, no TV (well, technically a huge old school one but wasn't on or was broken) and a fan on a table. I always go to Pep Boys or my Dad's house so by comparison I was not impressed. After waiting about 10 minutes Johnny told me he would move my car ahead of the rest since the other cars' pickup times were much later. That was an awesome gesture! I arrived at approx 9:20am with no appointment and was in my Mazda by 10:45am. The labor costs were extremely reasonable and I no longer had a shaky, loud sounding vehicle. This is definitely not a fancy place- no public bathroom, awful lobby, no digital printed receipt (you just get the old school written one), and the other amenities that a larger company may offer but they were very reasonably priced and didn't attempt awkward small talk about my car so I will definitely be returning. read more

Okay. Normally, I don't write reviews for a place if I had an unfavorable experience because I don't even want to be bothered with it anymore. But I want to explain some things about King Auto Repair that really pissed me off. I, like other Yelpers, came to King due to highly favorable reviews that I came across. The first time I came here, I had some kind of loud noise coming from my front left side. Johnny, the owner, came out and ensured me he would get it fixed. It turns out I needed a new wheel bearing. He assured me, that to save money, I did not need to get a hub assembly to go with it, that it was fine. I paid $100 for labor and the job was done. Awesome. The car rode smooth and great. Two months later.. I hear a HORRIBLE noise coming from the front left side again. I'm thinking it is something else other than the bearing since it was changed. I decided to go to another shop in North Charlotte to see what was going on. This was a VERY reputable shop. They told me the wheel bearing was bad and that it needed replacing. WHAT?!? I told them I just had it changed and the mechanic told me that whoever installed the bearing did it very poorly and was not installed correctly. I told him that I was told I didn't need a hub assembly. He laughed and told me to take it back to Johnny and see what he could do. Later on today.. I went to Johnny and told him that when he replaced the front left bearing, something has gone on. He heard the sound and immediately said, "THAT'S YOUR TRANSMISSION." Umm, what the f***? He said I never had the front left bearing done, and it was on the right hand side. I looked at him, with a puzzled daze, and ensured him that it was the left side. He called me wrong and said "I work on the cars, I know what side I did." I closed my mouth and let him find the receipt. And what did he find? IT WAS THE LEFT SIDE HE REPLACED. (Johnny didn't even work on the car. It was the other mechanics there who couldn't even communicate with me.) He said I could go to the junkyard to save money and get the part and that he would charge me cheaper for the labor. For work that was done incorrectly, I shouldn't pay a dime for him to fix it. I left and will never return again. If you need something like brake pads, light replacements, tires changed, then fine. Go here and use your own discretion. But for larger projects that need some kind of MASTER work, do not even bother sending your car here. I'm sure he is a nice guy, just not professional at all and always thinks he is right. I hate to put his shop down like this, but someone had to say something. read more

Visited King Auto Repair today to get diagnostics testing for engine light. Owner (Johnny) was very straightforward, polite and courteous. The shop is right in the corner of 35th and Plaza. It doesn't look like much from the street and the waiting room is a little dusty, but who cares. After running several tests (2 hours), he suggested a very minor fix for my problem. Total bill $80 ... I'm pleased and happy to have found an honest hard working mechanic. I will definitely use Johnny in the future. Fair and reasonable pricing and a broad range of services ... this is my "Go To" mechanic from now on . Don't hesitate to use this place, they're fair. read more

Needed front and rear brake replacements and read the reviews on here and decided to give them a try. My husband called to inquire about the cost and availability of the brake replacements and the owner was very upfront and pleasant. He stated if we bought them ourselves, we can bring the car in the same day for them to replace them and that's exactly what we did. While we were waiting in the waiting room, the owner came to introduce himself again and asked how did we find him- we stated on Yelp. First time I visited Johnny and his staff my Maxima was in desperate need of repair and funds were tight. Johnny repaired my alternator and informed me that I would soon need a battery. So I brushed it off and not a month later my battery fried. #dead Second time around I noticed a loudly embarrassing scraping noise which I expected to be my breaks. Indeed it was the breaks but Johnny again informed me that I needed a wheel Barron, Rotors and pads. Once again I ordered the parts and had them replaced. During that visit Johnny informed me that it was a matter of time before I needed a lower control arm. Steering rack. Power steering pump and power steering hose. I was like Johnny Please!! No more bad news!! But slowly and very surely I had them replaced. Less than $1000.00 total in labor cost for all visits There are two morals of this story: (1)think long and hard before buying a used car and (2)if you do please take it to King Auto and let Johnny and his staff take care of you. read more

I recently moved to Charlotte and was in need of a local mechanic. I heard a squeaking noise from my breaks and knew it was time to change them. Anxiety set in, being that I am not only in a new city, but also female in need of auto repair. (us ladies know we are usually taken advantage of at car shops) Well, I jumped on yelp and did a little research and stumbled across King Auto Repair. I sent a message to inquire about a price for the repair that I needed and I received a response in just a short amount of time with a quote. I went to the shop yesterday (9/3/16). The owner took a look at my break pads and told me that I only needed to replace the front.*Praise dance* He could have easily told me that all 4 needed to be changed and I would have went with it. He recommended a certain brand that I was able to find at advance auto (by the way I ordered it online and received a 20% discount!!) I picked them up in just a few minutes and headed back to the shop. I was prepared to wait a while with a book, snacks and water BUT I was only there for about 20 minutes. How AWESOME is that!? Thank you King Auto Repair for taking away my anxiety and replacing my break pads in no time! I will definitely keep you all on my list for any future auto repair and recommend to anyone in need of a good mechanic. Called to get a quote on brakes and was quoted a reasonable price however ;when asked which brakes were having issues I advised Johnny that I was almost certain that it was the front brakes but I wanted him to check before I purchased them. He had a attitude like I was bothering him &said he cnt do any work on my car but he couldn't give me a reason as to why. He is very unprofessional and is in the wrong field if he does not like to answer questions. I would ratherpay more $ and be treated like a human being than pay less to be talked down too. I've been here a few times because he is right beside my house. Whenever I have gone and the owner wasn't there, the experience was great. The guys who work there are knowledgeable and honest. and give prices that aren't bad. However, when I have dealt with the owner it has been the same thing every time. He is always trying to convince me to do things that don't need to be done. The first instance was him saying I needed new tires, shocks, and struts. I had just bought this car used about 2 months prior. Before I purchased I brought it here to have the guys look it over. The owner was not there at the time. The guys were great they looked at everything and said it was fine and didn't even charge me. Then when I got back 2 months later and the owner was there suddenly the shocks weren't "safe to drive on." To be safe I did take it to another mechanic I had used in Belmont who said they were as worn as you would expect a car that age to be, and he wouldn't change them for maybe 150000 miles. The second problem was his insistence about oil changes. I follow my manufacturer's recommendation. When I went in today he said he would "let it slide, but if I kept going over my sticker (which was 3000 miles) he might have to charge me more" I told him I would keep following what the engineers who designed the car said to do. After finishing he tried to convince me that the oil he used is worthless after 3000 miles. This sounded like BS to me so I went to Mobile 1's website and found the oil he used. According to the maker of the oil the life is up to 15000 miles not 3000. So he was either wrong by a factor of 5 or lying by a factor of 5. Not to mention a simple oil change was 35 dollars. It is like you are getting the service of a cheap hole in the wall mechanic who tries to swindle you with out even getting any of the cheap prices. Close or not I am personally never going back here. I would encourage anyone who is taking his word that he is helping you out or not charging you for something you don't need. Get a second opinion. He will try to make you do uneeded and expensive services. That is unless you find out which days the owner isn't working and go in then. The guys who work there are awesome.
