My check engine light had been on and I got codes red prior to going into a shop, I called Jimmy to speak with him before scheduling an appointment he told me how much the diagnostic test would be. After going there my apt was to drop it off 8-9 am, he called before doing anything to my car and told me the price to fix it including tax and labor. I had a great experience with Nick's Auto a repair shop. I spoke to the owner directly when making my appointment and he was able to give me a very reasonable quote for replacing my break pads when I had called ahead. The earliest appointment I could get was 2 weeks out, but I wasn't in a hurry, so that worked for me. On the day of the appointment he found that I needed new rotors too, and I was fine with that. I really appreciated him calling me to see if I was ok with him doing those too. All in all, I had a great experience and my brakes were all fixed up in the same day. I brought my Subaru in to them and they were very honest with me about what I should expect in terms of timeline and cost. I have been coming to Nick's Auto Repair for a few years now, but I doubt I will be any longer. The guy is little grumpy, but that's not a big deal. The big deal is that when you schedule your oil change two weeks in advance, he tells you to bring your car "first thing in the morning" and leave the car with him for the whole day, what he doesn't tell you is that his "first thing in the morning" is between 8 and 9am and if it's a little later than 9, he's going to give your slot away. I think he's a little spoiled with a lot of business coming his way here in Plaza Midwood, so I'm going to make it easier for him and take my business elsewhere. read more

Took it to Jimmy at Nick's for an oil change and cosmetic and electrical repairs. They did high quality work and didn't try to rip me off, even going so far as to tell me "your radiator is mounted to the car with bondo"... they just wanted to let me know they weren't the ones that did that. Took my van because I had to practically stand on them to stop it moving. Nick,s son jimmy replaced a "brake Booster"- no change. Took it back.. oh your engine is reving too high, he says. So I wait there until the engine slows down and show him that the brakes are still not working at all. Said "Can't do anything for you." I left pretty upset that he wouldnt or could not fix my brakes after I had pai d him for the booster or whatever it was, if it was. If there is something that needs more inspection before he can say what's wrong, that's what he'll do. If something that you thought was broken doesn't need replacing, he won't force anything. It was bound to happen. My 2007 Dodge Caliber had almost 215,000 miles on it. Not the best made car, it had served me well since 2009. I had just passed Nick's location, heading home to Fort Mill. I had lived in Plaza-Midwood for 28 of the 30 years I have been in NC. Nick's had repaired this car previously. Suddenly, the temp light lit up, the warning bell went off, and the temp gauge was pegged on "H". This had never happened before. I turned around and got the car back to Nick's. I walked in the office and Jimmy told me he would be able to look at it by the end of the day and give me a call. When he called, he told me what was wrong and the cost to repair it. The cost was more than the value of the car. I told Jimmy I needed to think about it and did not want to make a quick decision. He said he understood. I told him I would call the next day with my decision. I told Jimmy that I had decided to donate the car to a non-profit. I asked if I could leave the car at the shop and he graciously allowed me to do that. I told him I needed to clean out the car and he said that was fine. He was so understanding and helpful. I just want to let anyone who reads this to know how much I appreciate what Jimmy did for me. He knew how stressed I was and did more than I ever expected. He was straightforward about what was wrong with the car. He handled giving the title to the person who picked up the car. He went above and beyond. We had a car that a thermostat problem that another mechanic said was beyond their ability. I brought that report to Nick's. Jimmy said they were really busy and it might be a day or so before it could be looked at and the work done. He called about four hours later with the analysis, tue explanation as to what it meant and how it was creating other issues that we thought was unrelated. He had it fixed by the end of the day and at a reasonable price....and that also fixed the other issues. Car runs great again. I am so glad that I took my car to Nick's! I am kicking myself for writing this review so much later after I had my car worked on. They deserve to have their praise sung from the rooftops! I called Nick's and said, 'My car needs some work, it has been a while', knowing that this can be a recipe for disaster at some repair shops. I was able to drop my car off within the hour on a regular weeknight! They called the next day with a full summary of all of the potential work my car would benefit from. I asked if they could hold off for a few hours while I checked in with some car friends to make sure all of their recommendations checked out. Everything that was listed was a realistic need for my car and either served as minor repair work or preventative maintenance. After giving them the go ahead to begin work we had a few more phone calls (I prefer calls to figure out these things) to establish pricing and time of pickup. Their quote was dead on and pick up was fast, easy, and again was able to happen after work on a weekday! I cannot begin to say how thankful I am for all of these reviews that led me to Jimmy at Nick's. I had gotten an oil change and my car was operating HORRIBLY. The manager of the place I got the oil change offered to pay for an assessment at another shop on Central that I won't name but it's a national chain... and they quoted me monstrous numbers for multiple options of repairs that may or may not have worked. I called some friends who are "car guys" and one told me to RUN. So I brought the car home as it shook and thought it was game over for the old girl but I did some research and found posts on Nexdoor and Yelp for Nicks. I ended up paying under $300 for something that would have been a minimum of $500 at the other shop - including the assessment. For the first 7 years we were together my car and I were spoiled rotten because one of my very best friends is a dang fine auto mechanic in a small independent shop. When I moved to Charlotte I knew the time would come when something would break on my poor car and I would have to find a new solution to my auto repair issues. I also know I wanted it to be a tiny, ugly building full of scruffy looking dudes not wearing chain store uniforms. Even having had only relatively minor work done there, I am confident in saying that Nick's is that place. When I called to check that I could have my car towed there for an alarm/ignition shutoff issue, I hadn't even fully explained the problem when the accented gentleman on the other end of the phone tried once to explain what needed to be done before telling me that yes, I could have it brought in. If I got it there before six he would lock it in his yard, otherwise have it brought in the next day because he didn't want to leave it our front over night. (This was sweet but I live, literally, a block away so It's spent many a night unfenced in the area.) After it was fixed, which only took them 2-3 hours from when I assume the tow truck arrived, I got a phone call in which they clearly detailed what had been done and why they think the problem occurred. I arrived at 8 (when they open) the next morning to pick it up, forked over my $47 and change (this is another place your checkbook isn't welcome, cash or plastic only!) and was out of there by 8:10. Next time something is amiss with my car, I will first pine for the days when my friend would fix it, but immediately after that I'll put in a call to Nick's. read more

Third time's a charm! Nick's is the third repair shop I've tried since moving to Charlotte four years ago with my 24-year old Mustang. This is the first one I feel I can trust to not take advantage of me. I arrived unannounced on what turned out to be a very busy Thursday morning for the shop. Jimmy said they might not be able to get to my car until Monday, which was fine with me since I wasn't comfortable driving it in its current condition anyway, so I was willing to leave it there until they could get to it. Jimmy called early the next morning (Friday) to tell me what was wrong with it and how much it would cost. I got a call a little later in the day saying they'd discovered another issue (one that didn't surprise me, so I knew he wasn't just making it up). I asked if it was something that could wait a month until I could afford the additional repair cost. He said "probably, for short trips, but no long distances." So I said I'd have to bring it back in a month for the additional work. He called an hour later to let me know the agreed upon work was finished and it was ready for pickup. So not only did the work get done much sooner than expected, but came in below the quoted amount because he gave me a discount for paying in cash!! Who does that?!? Finally found an honest mechanic in Charlotte! Twice we brought a car in. The first time our car wouldn't start and we had to get it towed to Nick's. He called us to let us know that it was starting just fine and that he could replace the starter but that might not fix the issue since he can't recreate it. The 2nd time we brought a car in, I needed an oil change, tire rotation, and spark plugs. He let me know that I didn't need spark plugs based on my mileage. I requested anyways so that I could stay under warranty on the car. Oil change and tire rotation cost slightly more than Valvoline, however I prefer to pay a little more for the peace of mind that a good mechanic is doing it. read more
