Thank heavens this city is starting to wake up to the goodness that chinese bao truly is. King Bao has a delicious assortment of baos (or chinese bun sandwiches) in their menu. On my first visit I tried the following: Hogzilla - pork belly goodness with pickled carrots, daikon, peanuts and cilantro. I suggest adding a pinch of siracha to counterbalance the sweetness of the meat and peanuts. Kickin Chicken - kimchi fried chicken, siracha aioli and scallions. I did not expect this one to be my favorite, but it was! For my next trip, I will order at least 2 of these because 1 was not nearly enough. Glen Rhee Bao - Korean short ribs, asian pear salsa and cilantro. Being a huge fan of Korean style meats, this was a no brainer. I loved the pear salsa in this bao because it added an acidity yet sweet element to the short ribs, which can be quite rich and meaty. Ordering from the specials allows customers to get a fair pricing on menu items. Though I will have to say, maybe I have the appetite of a 6'9 tall basketball player (trust me, far from it), but 3 baos were BARELY enough to get me full for lunch. I think 4 baos for me would have done the trick. My biggest complaint is the parking situation. As in, there is none. Street parking is all you've got, and if you're in a quick hurry, perhaps parking in a nearby establishment's parking lot would be fine (though I'm not sure how many parking rules that would break). Overall, a great addition to the Mills 50 dining scene. If you're out and about that area, I'd highly recommend it. read more

Incredible food and service! I've been wanting to Come to King Bao for a long time after all the great things that I've heard about it, and I don't know why I ever waited so long. I'm sad to say our experience here was a complete disappointment. Service was great and takeout was ready quickly but the quality of the food is so poor. I ordered the vegan bao, sweet potato bao, truffle tots and my friend had a bao with pork nelly, one with a crab cake, and fire tots. She liked her tots but said she has tasted much better baos elsewhere. My baos I felt had no seasoning, no salt, and were a bit dry. The truffle tots were greasy and left me feeling dull and nauseous for some time after. I'd recommend skipping this one. read more

I'm so stoked this place opened! Before, the only places I could grab some pork belly Bao buns were from fancy Asian-fusion restaurants (e.g. Moritmoto) and food trucks, but now there's a restaurant dedicated just for Baos. Enjoyed every one of the 5 Baos (kickin' chicken, hogzilla, firecracker shrimp, glen rhee, and mr. potato head.) and Porky's Tatchos I ordered. However, Kickin' chicken and Glen Rhee Bao were definitely favorites. I personally think tater tots are underrated and was quite surprised to see them as prominent items on the menu. It would be cool if they had a daily special Bao. Also, more seats would be nice. I'm not a big fan of awkwardly stalking people and camping out for seats (kinda like waiting for the bench at the gym. On a Monday. At 7pm. Right after New Years. You get the idea). ...but that's just me. Keeping with the gym analogy, after doing 4setsof12 bench presses, or in this case 3bitesof5Baos, the wait was worth it. My only complaint has to be the turf war with the parking, but they are worth looking for a parking spot for. I had the hogzilla- wonderfully meaty, most of the time you'll get pork pellet that's more belly than pork but this one is extra meaty and scrumptious, kickin chicken- amazing... no words to describe how crispy and juicy the chicken was, glen rhee- best marinated korean short rib I've had, & the coco loco- lived up to the name with a crazy crispy jumbo shrimp with a sweet mango salsa too. I came to check this place out with my best friend when I came up to see her. I ordered had ordered two but apparently he got three.i guess it was a miss communication from my part. Well I didn't want to switch it so I just ate what I got. It was a chicken one, the tofu and the Cuban. Surprisingly the tofu was the best one for me. The chicken one was good but I didn't like it very much and the Cuban just taste like regular meat I eat at home because I'm Cuban, so I guess that's not a bad thing. But the tofu one was completely different and the sauce on it was just amazing. I also ordered the Tarzan dessert. Personally i didn't really like it. I feel like the bao bread doesn't go with Nutella. We also get the tater tots with cheese. It was good tasted freshly made. I definitely want to come back and try the other ones. 3 was actually perfect and filled me up. Great little spot and decor. Not a lot of choices for drinks but it's fine because right next door is a drink place where they make teas and stuff. They are very fast and the food is good. I also liked the music. read more

We came here for lunch on the last day of our trip. Saw good Yelp reviews so thought we would check it out. Between my husband and I, we ordered 5 baos: hogzilla, firecracker shrimp, OMG, glen rhee, and kicken chicken. We also tried the truffle tots. Those were quite good with a mix of Sriracha sauce and ketchup. Here's the lowdown on the baos we ordered- Hogzilla- probably one of the better baos. Pork belly was well cooked. Good texture. Great flavor. Kicken chicken- fried chicken was big and juicy with a nice crispy, spicy outside crust. Glen Rhee- this was so so. I didn't get a Korean short rib flavor out of it. It was more like a pulled pork bun. Firecracker shrimp- really good. They gave a good portion of shrimp: I had 4 in the bao. Nice flavor. Really enjoyed it. OMG- pretty good. If you're into fish tacos, this is the choice for you. Their value was great. They offer a 2 bao combo for $7 and a 3 bao combo for $9. Combos include a drink. They up charge for the seafood baos and exclude some of their specialties but it still makes for a great value meal compared to spending the same amount of money at any chain fast food place. read more

My boyfriend and I love this place so much! The food here is amazing and cheap! The staff is super friendly and we've been there so many times that one of the guys that works there recognized us. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if the next time we go they know our orders. I took my parents for my moms birthday and they are not the most open people when it comes to trying different types of food but they had one bite and they go there even more than I do now! After reading some pretty decent reviews on Yelp, I decided to go rogue and indulge in some not-so-gluten-free bao. I'm sad to say these were just okay. For me, it just wasn't worth the "cheat." I had the fried chicken bao, it was okay. The fried crab cake looked (and tasted) like a chubby, flattened fish stick. I also had the pork belly, eh. The concept is cool, however, the flavor profiles just didn't WOW me on my first visit. I do believe, in time - this crew can surely crank out some, eye's in the back of your head type bao. I had heard a lot--and I mean a lot--of hype about this place, so I determined to check it out for myself. Here's my two cents: First, the atmosphere is no frills, and there is little seating, mostly at the bar table on the side wall. If you've been to NYC it's a lot like the little hole in the wall places there. On to the food. The sandwiches are really good. They are small but stuffed full, so one sandwich is a good snack, 2 is a light meal, and 3 will fill you up. (The combo of 2 sandwiches and a drink for $7 or 3 with a drink for $9 is a crazy good deal!) I love the steamed buns, and the short rib filling is out of this world. I also got the pork belly, which was great, and the grouper, which proved to be better fried fish than I've had in a long while. I was a little disappointed in the accoutrements though. The grouper was supposed to have a kimchee slaw on it, but it was just normal, sweet-ish cole slaw. All the sandwiches had so little topping that it seemed almost an afterthought, but the upside to this is that there was little topping because the sandwich was so full of meat. Do with that what you will. We also got the tater tatchos, which are like nachos with tater tots. They were really good but my husband and I agreed they needed something. I will definitely be back, but I sort of wish I hadn't bought in to the hype beforehand. I went in with a super high expectations, and while it was really, really good, it wasn't the earth-shattering experience I had hoped it would be. I LOVE me some King Bao, so much that I can't in fact have bao anywhere else because it doesn't measure up! Located off of 17-92 close to Colonial. Parking can be tricky but the parking Gods are in our favor each time we come because I've always managed to get front street parking with no issues. Cute little spot! Their menu displays their signature baos and tatchos (tator tots with different toppings) and usually on another sign they have their special baos for that day. I LOVE the Hogzilla which has this braised pork belly. I also love the kickin chicken (has kimchi fried chicken) and the glen ree bao (marinated Korean short rib with Asian pear salsa and cilantro). I've always gotten porky's tatchos which has braised pork, cheddar cheese sauce, jalapeños, sour cream, and scallions -- sooo good!! For dessert we've had the Tarzan which is a fried bao with Nutella, bananas, and powdered sugar. Delicious!!!
