We were quickly seated and given menus. They had quite a selection of drinks. Returned quickly to get our drink order and returned quickly with our drinks. For appetizers, we chose the clams casino and NE clam chowder. Then, I chose the calamari platter and the hubby chose the fisherman's platter (which he ended up choosing the shrimps, cod, scallops and clam strip). The appetizers were divine! This was the best clam chowder I have tasted in so many years. The clams casino was also SO good! Definitely worth getting again and again. Then the entrees arrived. Portions were large. The calamari was great! Real calamari, rings and tentacles. So many places just give you soggy rings. These were crisp, real tasty calamari with no greasy texture. Unbelievable. Hubby's platter had so many choices. Fortunately, he shared pieces with me. Felt like I was in heaven. Everything was utterly delicious. And there was more. Normally the condiments and fries are just filler. Not the case here. Took a bite of the coleslaw and knew it was homemade. In fact, thought they used my homemade recipe, lol. Same goes for their own tartar sauce and cocktail sauce - homemade. The fries were also Real, hand cut fries. Not found in a bag. So this place is real special. It tells me they care about what they serve. I have read some of the ratings, post visit. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I can say from our experience, this restaurant cares about their food and guests. And no one is perfect. I cook and can appreciate great food when I eat out. This is excellent. Nellie's is a surprising vegan-friendly restaurant in an equally surprising dockside location. Off the beaten path from downtown Branford, it is easily overlooked amid all the large pleasure and fishing boats both moored in the Branford River and dry-docked on land and in colossal hangers. Given its maritime environment, you'd expect its menu would be heavy with fish and sea animals, yet it also offers many vegan options, in fact more vegan dishes than vegetarian dishes. Don't be dissuaded by its nondescript name more appropriate for a horse, as in "Whoaaaa, Nellie." As evidenced by a streetside old signage, its more decorous former full name was Nellie's Green Restaurant, but somewhere along the way the word "Green" unfortunately got dropped from the name. Fortunately, its many vegan dishes were not dropped from the menu. They speak fluent vegan here. In addition to being marked with "V" for Vegan, the word "Vegan" stands out as the predominant first word in the names of the vegan dishes. That's Vegan 'Crab' Cakes. Vegan Layer Dip. Vegan Ceviche. Vegan Tacos. Vegan 'Crab' Cake Wrap. Vegan Burger. There's also Avocado Toast, Guacamole and Chips, several entrées marked "VO," meaning Vegan Option by omission, and two salads and several side dishes, for instance Blackened Tofu, that all happen to be vegan without making a big show of it. I recommend the Vegan Burger, which is a house-made black bean patty, not pre-fab Beyond Impossibility mock meat. It comes by default with potato fries, but faulting deep-fried food I was able to upgrade my burger with one of the several vegan side dishes, in my case the Grilled Zucchini, which was delectable. My soul-mate soy-mate lunch-mate ordered the Vegan Tacos and a side of Blackened Tofu, and she enjoyed both. The spacious outdoor patio is larger than the ample indoor dining area, is fully sheltered from the blazing sun or dripping rain, and is perched right alongside the river, though during boating season the river is so cluttered with boats that it can hardly be described as picturesque. The blistered snap peas with preserved lemon were also delicious. That said, for a place with "oyster" in the name, we expected a wider or higher-quality selection, perhaps including some from Canada, rather than the fairly standard options from CT and MA. Unfortunately, the main dishes missed the mark for us and didn't offer enough food. The sea bass was overcooked. the accompanying lima beans weren't cooked all the way through, and the dish lacked depth of flavor. The shrimp main also fell short, with the shrimp having a very odd, mushy bland flavor. To finish, the pot de crème had so much cream and so little actual chocolate that there was almost no chocolate flavor. On a separate note, navigating the QR code menu was pretty obnoxious. Restaurants should really just offer traditional paper menus; people stare at screens all day and come out to engage with each other, not look at a phone again, and constantly have it on the table. While I appreciate Fair Haven Oyster's creative concepts, their tinned fish with pickled sides, and their great starters, the execution on the mains and the portion sizes left something to be desired, especially at these price points. This was probably our sixth time going to Fairhaven Oyster. We've been going over the past few years and my overall takeaway is that I will definitely return for the drinks, the great atmosphere, and some appetizers, but will not be ordering mains.

Please note dates on reviews you read and do not put much faith in reviews that are over a decade old! Reviews that stay around forever do a disservice to a business.

I originally called Connecticut Shellfish because I saw their truck in my town a coupe of days a…read moreweek. So I called and spoke to Arnold, the sales manager. I asked him about a minimum order and he explained that they are in my area three days a week and as long as he made a few bucks it was fine. He never told me a specific dollar value. I have a Green Certified© restaurant I use specific seafood items. After going over my list with him he explained that Connecticut Shellfish has the best resources because of multiple locations and all the markets they are in. He assured me that they can get what I need. In the beginning of our relationship I ordered what they stocked in hopes of all the other items they optimistically promised me. Well those items never came through, even a year later. I even had to call Arnold a couple of times again. The second time I spoke to him he didn't remember our conversion, me or the items. Ok that may be understandable. So I gave him a refresher. I was working with Chris, my salesperson. I was asking him all the time about the items. All I got was dead ends. Now keep in mind these items would have increased my dollar volume with them drastically. After working with my first salesperson Chris for about 8 months I had to call Arnold to assign me a new salesperson. It was very frustrating at the least to deal with Chris. I have never met a salesperson with so many excuses on why I didn't get a call back. Not saying he didn't call me back, but why 4 or more hours later. The txt messages would come in at 9:30pm (and later) to follow up with a phone message I left him in the afternoon. I don't play games and asked for a new salesperson. Arnold told me that he told Chris not even account is for him and don't worry about it. Sorry as the sales manager you need to investigate and figure out if this happening to other accounts and improve customer service. I was never asked key questions that could have improved my relationship with them. Arrives my new salesperson Freddy. Both Freddy, and previously Chris, would try to sell me items that do not fit the sustainability of my menu. Salespeople are suppose to consult their accounts on items that they can use based on their needs. This never happened with Chris or Freddy. It was frustrating to get sales pitches on items that would never use. Remember Green Certified means I can only use sustainable species of fish. As for the the delivery driver Bill. He is always in a hurry. In a hurry to a point were he is just rude. When I'm not available to check in an order I would have my mother come down and take care of it. My mom is in her late 70's and just lives a quarter of a mile away. Bill was so impatience most days that he hated waiting for me to write a check. This was over 90% of the deliveries he would rush, complain and be downright miserable. I know time is money, but don't pressure the customer like this. My last order Freddy told me that I did not reach the minimum. What minimum I thinking SMH, Arnold told me no minimums from day one. I called my order in after hours and it was shipped the next day. Well Bill, the driver, was in his usual hurry. I was out of town so I had to call my mom. Bill called for a second time within 10 minutes. I told him my mom is on her way. My mom calls me less than 5 minutes later and Bill is gone and didn't leave the order. He has always left the order in the past. He was told by Freddy not to leave my order. I called Freddy, he blamed Arnold. I called Arnold very upset and explained my whole history with Connecticut Shellfish. I explained all the let downs and false promises and now this. He could care less and hung up on me. I called back and he told me he wasn't going to listen to me and to get lost. I called back and now the receptionist is in on this and told me his voicemail is full. I called the corporate office and spoke to Cathy and explained the whole situation. She responded with wow, as in shock. The Owner is out of town so she passed my situation to the manager. Well it's a day and half later and the manager has not gotten back to me. This should be a major red flag issue. He needs to swallow the frog and call me ASAP. I sent Arnold an email and asked him to watch my video, since he didn't listen to me. He responded to go find another company. He has no idea what customer service is. Nor does he live by their customer service policy declaration on their website. It would have been very easy to actually care of me and my experience that I have received from them. But he has declined several opportunities to make this right and it seems that the GM is following in Arnold s steps. I welcome them to reach out to me as I do with my guests.
