I saw the good reviews so I decided to come in and get a trim by Helen. I called ahead of time and she said a trim would be $15, she ended up charging $20. I showed her a pic of how i wanted it which was more of a straight cut but ended up with a v cut. She asked me how much I wanted to trim and I told her two inches. She legit grabbed my hair and cut two inches off before cutting it some more after. I ended up with a full cut and 4-5 inches off. Mind you the whole time she kept reassuring me that my hair is still long even tho it looks like she's cutting a lot of. read more

With David, I paid a 1/3 of the price and it looks like a $120 haircut. I've paid hundreds of dollars to American salons here in Houston and it always looks like I went to one of those franchised salons. Yes, this place looks like a hole in the wall, but my hair looks like a million bucks with David's 17 years of experience and cost me $21. I am VERY disappointed in Helen, I had been going to her for a few years. Over the past 2 years I have returned home to have to remove long stray hairs that she missed. Also, I have had to trim my 'face frame' to a stronger degree (with more of a layered effect). I had asked her for the 3 times before this last time (the last that I will go there) to deepen the face frame. I thought that I'd give her a last chance. I was VERY specific about what I wanted ...showing her about where to have the frame. But, more importantly, I showed her that I wanted the overall length (the back and most of the sides to touch my shoulders); to only take off about an 112" or less. She cut at least 4 INCHES off. The length is about 3 inches ABOVE my shoulders. I am not sure if she is well but she was very fidgety and speaking in Vietnamese with no one around (not on her phone). SEEK HELP! read more

Even if it's full of people, the many barbers in there will quickly take care of you, so you don't typically have to wait too long without an appointment. Now I don't know if this is the place to get more hardcore hair care or fashion done, but I am just a man who just wants to have shorter hair and this place gets the job done - cheaply too! Whenever I explain the style I want, most of the hairdressers understand and execute accordingly. Ask for Ashley-she's very meticulous, friendly, and knows how to style women's hair. Price can't be beat for a woman's haircut ($12); it's $4 more for shampoo and wash. Also watch out if your hairdresser starts straightening your hair after it's cut-apparently this service is $2 (I wasn't informed of this when it happened to me, so they did not make me pay). They accept reservations and walk-ins, but it can get pretty busy during the weekends and around lunch hour. The only reason I'm not giving this five stars is because of a bad hair cut I received from one of the male employees. Best haircut and value around. Period. I've been coming to Tony at King Salon for several years now, upon a recommendation from my cousins. He's just about the only person I trust with my hair. I call him my "hair magician" because he really does work magic with hair. Especially Asian hair. It's not enough to have nice hair if you don't have a great cut! I'm Filipino and he just "gets" my hair. He understands how it can be wavy or straight, depending on how it's cut and styled. If you bring him a photo, he pretty much can duplicate the style with your hair. Of course, be realistic and find a haircut that is on someone who has similar hair, face shape, etc. He works magic, not miracles!! I went about a year without getting my hair cut (I had none because it all fell out from chemo). My hair has grown back and I recently got a fantastic cut from him. It's held up for several months now. King Salon is the definition of no-frills. Don't bring your snooty friends here (you know, the ones that are only used to overpriced salons that charge an arm and a leg and serve you cucumber water and all that stuff). This is where you come if you want a consistently good haircut and don't want to spend more than $20-25 (depending on how much you tip). The rest of the money in your pocket can buy you some yummy goodies next door at the Chinese bakery (Six Ping) or down the street at FIT. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the place is a little dated and a bit rough around the edges. They're constantly sweeping up the hair, but the whole place could use a refresh. But, you get what you pay for, and what you get is a really great haircut and a bargain! A few tips: Saturday is crazy busy. Try coming during the week, and always call beforehand, like a few days before or even the morning of. If you do come on a Saturday, be prepared for traffic and trouble finding a parking spot. Helen is the bomb-diggity. Now for hair, I've never walked into a non-Asian salon before. Spending over $30 on a regular haircut (coloring not included) just doesn't cut it for me (pun unintended). With that being said, at King Salon haircuts for women start at $16 and if you want your hair washed with it, it's $21. (Pretty much the minimum standard for Asian places out there.) Vietnamese is Helen's first language, although if you can't do that she speaks English and Chinese to make up for it! When I asked her about i, she said she still preferred English and really learned Chinese more or less to expand her clientele. She's very calm and attentive, not really the chatty type but not one to make you nervous. With just a little communication she completely understood the type of hairstyle that I wanted and she was able to do it in a timely manner! I went from a few inches past the shoulders to a dramatic asymmetrical bob and I like it very much. At first I was a bit nervous because I had called ahead to make an appointment for my friend and me and the phone conversation was a bit brusque; but now, thinking back, I suppose that was more due to the language barrier than anything else. Avoid this place at all costs! Unless you're fine with looking like an ostrich at the end of your session. My sister and I opt to get a haircut here because it was much closer than our usual hairdresser. We just signed up for the biggest mistake that will haunt us for the next 3-4 months. *Not going to name the hairdresser to somewhat protect her rep - but she definitely had a lot of street cred here on Yelp.* The hairdresser was EXTREMELY nice, but she layered our hair WAY too much with choppy ends. My sister requested for a bob with LONG angled bangs. The hairdresser layered it so much that her bangs looked extremely choppy. Furthermore, the bangs went above her eyebrows - eyebrows that she hasn't seen in decades!!! Her bob turned out to be some weird, futuristic style - similar to Lord Farquaad's hairstyle from Shrek, but with chopped up bangs, as if a shark has taken a huge chomp of it. After seeing how bad her haircut was, I asked for a bang cut instead - I figured she couldn't do THAT much damage on only a small section of hair, right? And my bangs were extremely long at the moment and I desperate need to get them cut - if anything, it will grow out within a few days? Maybe? Welp, GG. After the bang cut - which she took sections of hair OUTSIDE the bang area (I requested for long, angled bangs - no layers - even showed her PICTURES) - my bangs are SO volumized and choppy and over-layered. I now look like I have a terrible-chopped up version of Donald Trump's toupee that I have to rock for the coming months. Thanks. Yes, haircut was cheap - $26 for both of us. This place was a little out of the way for me but I wanted to find a reputable place that did balayage for cheaper than the places around where I lived. This is the best $20 ($16 + $4 for the tip) haircut! A few years ago, I was really, really unhappy with my former hairstylist. He was over-priced and over-rated. I left inner loop and ventured off to Chinatown with hope of getting a better haircut. Upon a recommendation by my little sister, I tried out Tony at King Salon. He understands Asian hair and knows how thick and unruly it can get. Tony will be your saving grace during those hot and nasty days in Houston. The haircut also grows out nicely, and I have gone by for 4-5 months between cuts. (But, that's not recommended.) I have been going to him for four years, and have sent many friends and family members there. Here are some pointers if you decide to try out Tony @ King Salon: Make an appointment the day before or day of you want the cut. He's not a morning person. So, he doesn't show up until after 10am. Saturdays are notoriously busy. So try to get an early appointment. And, don't forget to bring cash. A twenty works best because it's $16 for the cut plus tip. read more

I rarely come out of a hair salon happy. It almost never happens, but with king salon, I am surprisingly pleased. All three times now. The first time I was with Helen, who is by far the most superior one. She told me how she worked in the beauty industry since she was 19! And now she's in her 40. She gave me natural and beautiful highlights, more concentrated on the bottom and in the layers underneath. I merely told her I want natural highlights and how I do not want noticeable roots when they grow out. Afterwards she kept asking me more in depth questions, giving me great input on how she would achieve the look, while constantly reassuring me. The haircut was perfect as well. Natural layers which add volume. The best part is how she always throws in a free hair styling for me. It always looks amazing, as if I'm ready to shoot a hair commercial! Lisa is great too. Especially with the extra hair styling. I wanted to intensify my highlights since it was summer. It turned out the right color but she made the mistake on making the color too concentrated on the top. No one notices but me. Despite that mishap, I still admire her workmanship. She refused to speed up my appointment, despite how ridiculously thick and long my hair was. Two people had to assist her and she had to cancel another appointment I'll admit, I'm blessed with voluminous hair and I get a lot of compliments with people asking me where I go. I made an appointment with John and he's nice, really friendly. Service was great but the haircut? NO. I warned him that my hair tends to poof up, but he promised me that it didn't matter. He even said that he could give me a new haircut that wouldn't require any extra work- I could wake up, comb my hair, and still look great. Such a lie! My sisters told me that I looked like Bon Jovi, but I looked him up to double check. They were wrong. Bon Jovi looks way better than me! In the end, I had to pay $120 for a straight perm to make my hair look decent again. Maybe it's not really his fault and my hair is simply impossible, but he really shouldn't be promising his customers things he can't do. I came with high expectations based on the reviews but left disappointed. /: To clarify, I was impressed by the expertise the hair dresser had. He expertly thinned out my hair with only a razor, and the cut I have now is wonderfully light and easy to manage! However, he gave me the exact opposite of what I asked from. Right from the get-go, I told him I wanted a blunt cut, little to no layers, and showed a picture. He said that it wouldn't look "as natural" and that he recommended I thin out the ends a little. I agreed, thinking he would do some layering but stay as close as he could to the picture. To my dismay, at the end of the cut, I was left with a completely different hairstyle than what I asked for. My dreams of having a blunt, thick bob were replaced with wispy strands. I'm not saying it was a bad haircut, but it was totally different from what I asked for. I've had my hair cut by almost everyone there (both male and female), because I am too lazy to make an appointment with just one hair dresser. I usually just go and ask who ever is available and see if that person can cut my hair. Helen and John are my favorite. Horrific experience with owner Helen. I came here to shampoo my hair, the stylist doesn't know how to wash hair, kept pulling my hair, and doesn't wrap towel after rising my hair so I walked to the chair with wet dripping hair. For guy's haircut, this place is pretty cheap. I got it cut for $10 w/ tip included. But you get what you paid for. The place is bloody hot, either they don't have AC, or not enough, but the entire time I was there, I was bathed in my own sweat. I think a wash for your hair is extra. I guess for a $7 haircut, you can't be expecting much, but it just made me feel like my high school Great Clip days. The dude that cut my hair was pretty arrogant. Given, I just started working in Houston and haven't cut my hair in like a month, hence it was kinda shaggy. I walked in Thursday morning. Thursdays are less busy so this it turned out that this is a great time to drop in. Helen is a beautiful, thoughtful stylist who imbues all of her work with this uncanny perceptiveness and artistry. She could tell by looking at me when I last colored my hair, as well as correctly deduced some other personal details about my character and style. She's very attentive to my requests and transformed my old, faded ombre dye job into something that's simultaneously natural-looking and subtle, yet also radiant and glamorous -she matched my last ombre color and brought it up to soft ash colored highlights all over my hair. I have really thick, long hair, so this proved to be a momentous task, but is so detailed and takes such pride in her work, that she even updated my ombre under my highlights just to make the effect perfect. The result is that my hair now catches light better and looks more dimensional. I'm really pleased with it! Her whole staff is very sweet and detail-oriented. The lady who washed in my hair was gentle and gave one hell of a scalp rub. The attention to customer service is so high that Helen even learned to speak English and Mandarin fluently, in addition to Vietnamese! When I first came in Helen wanted to make sure I had a great first experience and it was. I showed her a picture of the kind of haircut I wanted and we went from there.
