Today I visited the historic Tabard Inn Restaurant. In existence since 1922, you immediately feel like you have stepped back in time when you enter. The place is carved up into unique spaces, from dark private lounge areas to dining spaces to sun-soaked dining rooms. It is a visual treat! As for food, I tried several Starters and mostly enjoyed them. I started with the Tabard donut because why not start a meal with dessert right?! And when it's named after the establishment it has to be good. And it was! The sugar sprinkled cake donut was warm and tasty - a must try! I also ordered the corn soup. It was a small bowl of, you guessed it, kernel corn infused soup base with a crusty covering. The shell (reminded me of crème brûlée) was good, but I was a bit disappointed that the soup was only lukewarm. The best part of the meal was the hush puppies. They had a bit of a spicy kick and were slightly greasy, but they were a comfort food delight! I will definitely get more of them when I return! Recently attended a day-long meeting at the Tabard Inn. I'd stayed at the hotel many years ago and have had a meal or two here way back when. I didn't realize they have a meeting space upstairs. We had a light breakfast and lunch included during our meeting, which were both good with generous portions offered. Service was friendly and prompt. When I asked if they had any hotter water for hot tea, I got a little push back but once I mentioned the water in my cup (that I had just poured from the large container with a Sterno underneath) was tepid, the server went out of his way to bring me a small pot of hotter water, which was very appreciated. read more

Came here with my colleagues for lunch :) Very cute spot. I love the decor, and I wish I got more pictures. I always go for the chicken sandwich :) and it was good! I judge places off of the chicken sandwich and the bread and they won for both! Lol! It wasn't the best sandwich but it hit the craving. The fries were really good too. All of my coworkers loved their meals too. We will definitely come back. Service was really fast and our waiter was awesome! read more

The Tabard Inn is a pleasant throwback to an earlier era, with a staff that makes you feel like you're dining at someone's home. My wife and I enjoyed drinks in the lounge before our dinner reservation with friends. If you're not dining, they offer a slightly different food menu in the lounge, more similar to their lunch menu. Our table shared the cheese fritters and black beluga lentil hummus, both of which were tasty. The hummus was especially fresh and flavorful. My wife and I shared the chicken fricassee and bavette steak. I particularly enjoyed the earthy sides that accompanied each dish. We also added a side of mushrooms. Had such a great brunch at Tabard Inn! We started with the Tabard Doughnut and wooow... it was incredible, almost like French toast in doughnut form. For drinks, we tried the Paloma and the Gin in the Cupboard. Both were tasty and light enough to enjoy with brunch, so we were very happy with our choices. I went with The Burger (so good I took the rest home) and my boyfriend had the Tabard Breakfast Sandwich with chicken sausage. Both were filling and delicious. Very cozy vibe the moment you step in the front door. Definitely old school fine dining done right. Our server, Oyuka, was simply outside. We were never hurried along. There were numerous food highlights. Surprisingly, the mushroom garlic butter for the dinner roll was amazing. Memorable. Unfortunately we weren't hungry enough to eat an appetizer and entree, so can't help there. Both the fish and fricassee were fantastic! The flourless chocolate cake was a decadent treat. Wow! The food here is amazing. You can tell they're putting in the work and making it from scratch. We came here for breakfast and I had the eggs Benedict. I can appreciate how hard it is to perfectly nail hollandaise sauce and these guys are doing it. My kids had the homemade donuts and they came out freshly made and still hot with a side of vanilla whipped cream. The ambiance is lovely with a beautiful antique sitting room at the entrance. We loved the entranceway. It's beautiful. Aesha greeted us so kindly when we arrived for dinner and gave us a little tour. The rooms are beautifully furnished with so much detail. One room even had a curio cabinet with miniature replicas of rooms from the hotel. We were early, so we spent some time at the bar. I tried the Follow the Smoke rum craft drink. It was smoke infused with applewood. Our bartender, Darin, was attentive and took good care of us. He gave us good suggestions for dinner options. I also tried the Respect your Elders cocktail. It was delicious. Our server was Fatima. She was so nice and took excellent care of us. She checked on us periodically through our meal and was very attentive. The dining area was very charming. We ordered the Filet Mignon, grilled Salmon, cheese fritters and frisée salad. Renee always made sure our table was always cleared of dishes and we had clean silverware. My filet was slightly overcooked, but the sauce was delicious and the carrots were cooked nicely. My husband said his salmon was cooked perfectly. The frisée salad was light and refreshing. The cheese fritters were light and airy with a unique flavor that was nice. For dessert we ordered the Chocolate Neapolitan and Crème Brûlée. My husband said the Chocolate Neapolitan was extraordinary with the white chocolate on top and the chocolate mousse on top of the graham cracker crust was a nice blend of flavors and textures. The Crème Brûlée was delicious with a citrus kick, although the serving is small. We topped it off with complimentary candied beets and caramel with sea salt. Off the main strip of busy Connecticut Ave, this is a beautiful historic place to dine. Came here to eat breakfast only, however, I am interested in staying in three future. I made reservations but looks like we didn't need to since we went early. You have the option of inside or their back patio which was very cute, almost like you were in another country. Service was very accommodating. Our food and coffee experience was amazing. Foodnis very flavorful and fresh. Their gouda grits are so good. I had the lox scrambled eggs with cream cheese, red union and capers -YUM! Great portions and great prices. We were looking for a restaurant in the area to meet up with an old friend, and she suggested Tabard Inn. Overall, it was good, but it didn't blow us away. Here's why: - We sat in the back patio area, which was very pleasant when there were a few people, but once it filled up, it got pretty loud and difficult to hear each other speak at times. - The menu was pretty good, and there was a broad range of specialty cocktails, as well as an extensive wine list. I was a little annoyed afterward when I saw the bill that it cost me $28 for a dirty martini with blue cheese olives. - I ordered the Rockfish with Black Eyed Peas, and my wife had the Roasted Squash. Both dishes were OK, but not amazing. The squash was pretty dry, and the fish was good, but just not worth the price. The best dish ended up being the salad we split, which was the Frisée salad. - The service, though, was very good. Bottom line: The Tabard Inn would probably be worth another shot, especially if we sat inside, which was quite cozy. read more

I had a great time eating lunch with my mother here. I loved the ambience and rich history of the historical restaurant. Both my mother and I loved the frites, and my mother loved her grilled chicken sandwich. My frisee salad was a little bacon and onion-heavy for my taste, but i still finished it. The service was fine, just fine. I admire the restaurants' efforts to stay culinarily relevant by updating their menus throughout the decades, and I can only imagine what flavors graced the plates of guests in bygone eras. As a vegetarian, I would not recommend this restaurant for weekday lunch. Although there are salads on the menu, the only vegetarian protein option is a poached egg. A runny yolk didn't sound appetizing to me on a caesar or garden salad. When I asked about a veggie burger, I was told that's not available. I ordered the only vegetarian entree - beluga lentils. It did not look very appetizing. It had some interesting flavor combinations but overall was not a very satisfying meal. It's a bummer because weekend brunch here is amazing! Came here for a church event. Heard about this place but didn't know what to expect. The inside of this hotel/restaurant is very chic. It gives a modern flair to but also has some many antique pieces. The patio area was very comfy and relaxing. For drinks red and white wine was served. I am a bit of a wine connoisseur so the selections here are nothing to write home about but it did the trick. For food, I got the deviled eggs and mushroom beignets as an appetizer. The deviled head were gross, don't recommend. No seasoning, flavor or anything. It was an attempt to make fancy eggs and they failed. The mushroom beignets were amazing!! Even if you hate mushrooms I recommend you order. They weren't over powering or anything. The hanger steak was very tender and cooked perfectly. The star of the show was the chimichurri on the side!!! Wow some of the best chimichurri I've had. Lastly dessert. Opted for the rhubarb, chocolate tart. Very good. The first thing you'll notice is the very dim lighting. Coming in on a sunny day, I was instantly stunned and dazed. The ambiance was pleasant, cozy, and had an old era Washingtonian aesthetic. It took approximately 10 minutes for a walk-in for three to get seated--not bad. After getting seated, it took a long time for our server to take our orders--she didn't even give us her name, but she did give complimentary muffins. My plate wasn't fully clean--left with remnants of an unknown substance. Only 45 minutes after being seated, we got our food. I got your classic American breakfast, their "Tabbard Breakfast." I went to brunch with friends on Saturday. We made the reservation for 2pm and were told that it ended at 3. Put a pin there. I ordered the scrambled eggs with lox. SO not good. The eggs were scrambled hard, the cream cheese was in clumps so it was either non-existent or far too much, and the capers and onions were just there. It sounded far better than it tasted. The potatoes were decent. The cup (bc it wasnt a full glass) of orange juice was $8. My companions had the breakfast sandwich, chicken sandwich, and challah french toast. No one complained, but no one finished either (except the one who had the french toast). But back to the pin. At around 2:55, the staff started asking if we were done and reaching for our plates. We get that brunch ended at 3, but we also expected that we'd be allowed to finish at our own pace. They started setting up for dinner around us and it quickly became apparent that we were holding them up, so we settled up and left. I won't be back. read more

I view Tabard Inn as a go-to for comfort food and appreciate the variety on their menu. Some favorites on the menu were their autumn soup, the crab fritters and beef carpaccio. The duck was great and had Asian inspired flavors which was a fun surprise. Both of their mocktail options were wonderful and thoughtfully curated. My husband and I both agreed that a surprising delight was the mushroom butter served with the bread- we could have taken an entire carton of this home for later! I only wish I had gone here for a drink with friends instead of a laid-back breakfast! The food was great: the omelette was creamy and fluffy, and the house-made potato chips were so unlike anything I've had before. Sugary doughnuts with cream cheese for $2 each; a jug (not just one cup!) of black coffee for $4... everything here was really reasonably priced, too. This was such a great spot for brunch! We wanted to check it out given the history behind it and weren't disappointed - the study/waiting area was super inviting - and tons of pictures and other memorabilia hanging to observe...once we were seated our experience was amazing as well! Our service was spot on - food came out quick and the staff was very attentive the whole way through...the complimentary muffins are absolutely sublime - we also tried the donut and that was really good too. We were not disappointed with our dishes - agreed that the shrimp and grits were superb. The pancakes were just sweet enough and really fluffy. Tabard Inn is possibly the cutest hotel I've ever stepped foot in. It's the oldest continuously operating inn in DC. All of the furniture is thoughtfully selected, reminded me a little of Mallorca, with antique European sensibility. The shrimp and grits were unbelievably good. I would eat grits there every day if I could. I also loved the scones and preserves. Even the plates and table mats played into its identity. The service was really attentive, not overly present which I appreciated as I was there on business. I was so glad to stumble upon such a lovely find. We have always enjoyed the Tabard Inn for its combination of good food and charming atmosphere. However, to our unpleasant surprise our party of four this past Tuesday October 14th ate dinner at the Tabard Inn. Three people in our group ordered the Beef Bourguignon. When we began to eat the beef part of the dish it was to our unpleasant surprise that the meat was fatty to the point it was indigestible. And all the pieces were equally of very poor quality. It was the worst meal we've had in DC in years. As we were hosting friends we did not want to be difficult and ruin the atmosphere. We then ordered dessert and it was good. The bill for four and no additional beverages besides water for four came to $200! We were outraged by the price and the extremely poor quality of the food.
