We went to Dovetail Restaurant & Bar for brunch to celebrate one of my friend's biggest accomplishments graduating. We were excited to enjoy a special moment together, and honestly, the food was great. Unfortunately, the way we were treated completely ruined the experience. Our server, name Aya, made us feel uncomfortable because we were speaking Spanish at our table. Instead of treating us with kindness and professionalism, she was rude, insulting, and at one point tried to intimidate us by saying she would call the police. It was shocking, humiliating, and deeply upsetting to experience something like that during what was supposed to be a happy celebration with friends. What disappointed us even more was that when the manager came to our table, there was no genuine apology or accountability for the way we had been treated. We paid our bill and left feeling unwelcome and disrespected. I normally do not leave negative reviews, but no one should ever feel discriminated against for speaking their language. I came here with some friends for restaurant week and it was well worth it! My friends and I got the 4 course menu and we loved most of the food. We shared almost everything. We did not love the Brussels sprouts, but for everything else, we loved. The standouts were the Caesar salad and pimento Mac and cheese. I would come back here again, especially because they have some fun events. The service was great and we were well taken care of. Dovetail is a cute little restaurant and bar inside the Viceroy hotel. We made an early reservation since we had tickets for a show right afterwards. The menu had so many interesting choices, we just ordered several plates to share. My favorite was the steak frites - perfectly seasoned and prepared exactly the way I wanted it. We came for bottomless brunch during restaurant week and ordered off their 3 course menu. I started with the Mac and cheese, then had the pot roast hash for my main and finished with the beignets for dessert. Mac and cheese was good! I also tried the deviled eggs and liked those too. For the main, the Roseda farm pot roast hash was not as good as I hoped. It was also slightly different than what was shown on their online menu. Online it was listed with Yukon potato and a hollandaise sauce. The menu in person listed sweet potato and no hollandaise. I did request to change it to regular potato as I wasn't a sweet potato fan, and hoped it would be more similar to the online menu option. What came was not as I expected. It felt a little bland to me and didn't resemble what I thought a hash was. For the dessert the beignets were great and I loved the espresso cream it came with. This was a bottomless brunch so we were given mimosas throughout the meal. They were definitely strong and I appreciated the waiter refilling our drinks during our time! Uh, so I'll say my experience was ok. I dined for brunch. It was a Sunday, and the restaurant was empty. The food was just ok. Nothing bad at all. But nothing wowing or memorable. Service was pretty good. The server was attentive. It's a beautiful restaurant, with an inviting outside area. I have wanted to dine here for a while. I'm sure the fact that it was wintertime, affected business. I look forward to coming back for another dining experience hopefully in the near future. Happy Hour Food, done really well! Small drinks that set our steady buzz into play. I ordered two classic margs. They went down too easy. This was our first stop on our crawl - out of necessity at first ( neither of us ate all day and plus we stayed in the hotel) but the small bites were unexpectedly done oh, so right! My friend and I dwell in the suburbs and we forget hotel lounges / bars are part of the city slicker's experience- but we were semi expecting a tired happy hour- a place to get it in on a Friday night before we hit the town. Instead of a the traditional HH fare, we were greeted with bites such as crab deviled eggs, Nashville hot sliders and corn fritters that were comforting on this cold winter's eve! They had a seasonal midnight margarita that my friend got and it was a unique twist on original margarita- I would highly recommend. Drinks too awhile, and the wait for the crab soup was insanely long, but the soup was great, I really liked the roe in it. Wait was so long for our next course they gave us a bottle of commentary prosecco, which I appreciated that they recognized the issue, but would've preferred timely food. Ceviche was decent but nothing special. The filet was excellent, they had a crunchy ruffles-like potato chip on top that added something special, and medium was done well. Our server was excellent, very sweet, Ukrainian accent. Our table was right next to the kitchen, I'd definitely ask for a different table if it went back. Located in the Viceroy hotel, Dovetail has very cute vibe both indoors and out but food is pretty mediocre! I decided to try their pre fix brunch menu with the bottomless mimosas. Compared to other brunch spots I've been to, the champagne used for these mimosas had a nice taste and $18 for bottomless was a great deal. The pastries for the first course were pretty standard and delicious. My favorite was the pain au chocolat. For the second course we tried the Nashville Sliders and Deviled Eggs. They both were good. The deviled eggs were a bit salty for my taste. For our main we tried the Jonny Cakes and the Broken Egg. Both dishes came with a generous portion of meat and when the pancakes were undercooked, they quickly remedied the situation. Overall I had a decent experience. read more

Denise gave us the perfect amount of attention and she is so, so friendly and warm! The outside seating is absolutely gorgeous! So cozy. It feels like a secret garden. The food was delicious. We started with the deviled eggs and avocado toast. Both yum! I had the Cherry Johnny Cakes, the special butter and syrup (cherry blossom themed) were unreal, any other butter and syrup can never live up to this. We stopped by Dovetail Bar for brunch and were very impressed with the ambiance of the restaurant. While the restaurant is in a hotel, I didn't think that the prices were not super expensive. In my experience, hotel restaurants tend to be a bit more pricey compared to other non-hotel restaurant of the same standards. I had the breakfast burrito with an side of grits. My burrito was cooked beautifully, and it was HUGE. To my suprise the grits were also prepared very nicely. We shared an order of calamarit, which I thought were perfectly fried. We also had bottomless mimosas, which I thought were just ok. I thought the restaurant could have put a bit more champagne in the mimosas. But, hey. You cannot win them all. read more

Really really enjoyed brunch at Dovetail and will definitely be back! Came for restaurant week and started with hush puppies. They were delicious! They're a little different than your usual hush puppies -- they're very soft in the middle with a gooey texture as opposed to a bread-y texture. They're on the sweeter side and are served over maple syrup with a pecan type spread on the side. Next I had the "you can't make an omelet" which was sunny side up eggs over potatoes, chorizo, and sweet red roasted peppers. Overall a yummy and filling dish! Caramelized onions and cheese would've really topped it off. Lastly had the peach and blueberry cobbler. Very yummy but wasn't quite reheated the right way so it wasn't quite warm enough and didn't taste super fresh - almost like it had sat under a heater and got a little dry/tough? Still tasty though. To drink I had a white russian which they made perfectly! Our server was super sweet and friendly. Our food came out on the slower side but nothing crazy. As you walk up, you're greeted by roaring fire pits and greenery, immediately grabbing your attention. There is the option of dining outside, so you can enjoy those views. Once you enter indoors, there's tons of seating to choose from. We opted for the bar, and were greeted by Sachi, she gave us a chance to look at the menus and gave us some insight on her favorite dishes/drinks. A gem hidden in plain sight. Found this attraction as if I found gold. From the outside entrance to the walking was spectacular and warming. Literally warming since they had the fire pits going and the warm air just reached out to you. This spot is shared with a hotel so walking toward it you'll have 2 entrances to choose from. Inside was delightful and filled with an enchanting decor. Gold & Blue through out. Our bartender was attentive and skillful. I drank a beer since they had a happy hour deal going on that was going to end at 7. Also consumed some great oysters that were on happy hour for 2 dollars. Was informed with certainty that the gluten free option for bread was a burger bun, and therefore could not do any of the toast based brunch options. Opted for the burger, and was served a single slice of bread underneath two small patties with overcooked bacon and nearly no pimento cheese or lettuce. We had deviled eggs, hush puppies, sea bass, salmon, spaghetti with veal meatballs, charred broccoli, French fries, matcha tiramisu, strawberry panna cotta and caramel mousse with doughnuts. There was no octopus or quinoa salad or asparagus soup on this menu. Maybe those were their spring items. We would have preferred the salmon with actual grits instead of the grit cake. Inside the Viceroy, Dovetail makes up for all the bad that hotel restaurants usually come to be. The food was creative and fun, not to mention extremely tasty. The staff was extremely friendly and gave some great suggestions. I came for breakfast and they were having an Asian menu so I ordered some divine Fries with bonito flakes and an eel sauce concoction , and wow I could not get enough of the sauce. And my breakfast burrito had a stunning sunny-side up egg on top. The tortilla was crisp and every bite was delightful. First of all, LOVE staying at the Viceroy. Ezekiel at the front desk was very kind and helpful the last two times I stayed. Rooms are always clean and comfortable. For the restaurant, food is better than expected for a hotel restaurant. I had the pumpkin soup- delish. Hush puppies were tasty. The Caesar salad was very difficult to eat; like a deconstructed salad with huge pieces of lettuce. Would definitely recommend they shred it so it's bite size manageable. So I've been going back and forth about for a few days on how to accurately describe my experience. Like what rating to give a place where the service and dining experience was poorrrr, but manager realizes that and takes initiative to step in and kinda tilt the experience upward but you're already so fed to it's like ughh. Well, I came here for restaurant and my friend and I were so excited. I'm a huge foodie and I had never even heard of this place so I was super stoked. We sat at the bar because it was late and we wanted to get in and out. Ordered drinks..30 mins later we did not have our drinks. We were the only people at the bar so I was confused... now there's was one bartender I will say. But over thirty minutes?! And we ordered shots too so like you can even just give us those to wet our palate. After waiting like 37 minutes I walked over to the left side of the bar and asked the bartender for our drinks. After a few more minutes she returned to our side then gave us our drinks. Also we asked her for the regular menu in addition to the restaurant week menu and she said it's only the restaurant week menu. But after speaking to a server we were provided with the a la carte menu that varied slightly from the restaurant week one. I think it hard sandwiches and I think an additional app. When I looked online we had saw oysters and I saw those and wanted to get those but they weren't on the menu provided. I wasn't aware that many of there standard menu options weren't going to be available- not always/usually the case. After like 40-45 mins to just get our drinks I placed all three restaurant week . (Sat at bar at 820p drinks delivered at 902p) so by this point we are actually just hungry and annoyed. And weren't confident on our food coming so around 913 we attempted to close out and just go somewhere else. This is where the manager intervened. Said my food would be out in one minute. About four mins later he brings my app. He says our food will come shortly after. So app came at 9:17, food at 933p. But we were just thrown off from that initial hour. So about the food- I got the yellow mellow. Since it said soup I assumed it was hot but I totally missed the word chilled! Reading is fundamental yall! But nah, it was cold. I wasn't a fan but there's nothing wrong with it it just wasn't what I thought. I then ordered roasted chicken and it was good! Light fish. But good. My friend got the old south salmon and i enjoyed this one more! I'm not a huge grits person but the medley on top of these grits makes the combo go crazy! My friend just wanted the salmon which worked for me cuz I needed more food. So I ended up put my chicken with the grits and the medley. Then the chicken came like on top of basically cucumbers and tomatoes so I ate it like the side. This was the first time I was smiling. The manager did see and empathize with our experience. I think he could read our facts and tried to do what he could to save the visit. We had closed out before had finished our food because we knew we weren't going to stay any longer so I don't have any dessert reviews because didn't get there. The manager made adjustments to our bill which is the only reason this review isn't a one or two star. The ambience is cute! The bathrooms have a good mirror (this is a bonus for me) . An improvement in service as well as customer service would change this all around. Like when we waited that first 45 minutes we hadn't talked to anyone! No one with an update like hey we are behind a but didn't forget about you, etc. Later, the bartender did circle back and gave us a shot for the inconvenience which we appreciated. Maybe this was just a bad day! You never know. Maybe a cook called out or a bartender called out. Maybe restaurant week pushed them over the edge- but sadly we were so irkeddddd. Eating here is a unique experience. You will find dynamite food, great service, and a modern, sheik ambience unlike many restaurants. Also unlike other restaurants, nothing was too sweet or salty and everything was fresh. Portion sizes are great. I would recommend going during the Cherry Blossom festival for their unique, multi-course offerings. The only downside for me is though its food is divine, its price tag is a bit steep for the amount of food you're given. Nevertheless, a one-of-a-kind experience for anyone visiting D.C.! read more

My partner had the chicken and dumplings, and it was perfectly satisfying on the cold night that we were in. It was not too busy inside - not sure why because everything we had was delicious. Went here a few weeks ago with a group of friends, party of 7 for a celebration of many milestones. We easily got same week reservation for our party on a Friday night, which was difficult in DC. This was the only reason why I made the reservation and thank god Dovetail did not disappoint. Ambiance was amazing. They placed us at the "chef's table" in the back, by the kitchen. It was secluded and intimate. Music was on point and not overly loud so we can actually converse. The hotel lobby and library's sitting room is gorgeous. The real highlight was the bar and food. Wow wow wow. Everyone was so impressed with the bartenders and kitchen staff. Classic cocktails done right and their signature cocktails were tasty. A female bartender made our group these amazing shooters once we moved to the bar after our meal and they matched our fun vibes for sure. We got a few apps and different entrees for our group and damn, flavors and techniques were comparable to other Michelin starred restaurants in the city. There wasn't one bad dish. Same fan favorites were the kimchi deviled eggs (some of the best I've ever had), pork rinds (still popping when brought to the table), braised lamb, chicken dish (highlight was the mushroom strudel that came with it), but one of the best dish was the veal marsala special that's not in the menu. This definitely needs to be on the regular menu. My fiancé was still talking about it days after! Didn't take many pics cause we were all busy catching up but presentation were so cute and appealing. At the end of the meal, they brought out a complimentary chocolate cake with candles out for the table cause I said we were celebrating a birthday. It was decadent for sure. Very nice touch on the service part and made the special event more memorable. Our server was new and was slow at first but the manager picked up. Beautiful indoor/outdoor space in the Viceroy hotel in DC. I loved the modern retro vibe and the service was wonderful. Someone in our party couldn't eat dairy and our server was extremely cautious to ensure we knew exactly what contained dairy even if it was not obvious. It's a care to detail I really appreciate. It seemed like some parties got bread at the beginning but we didn't. I only mention it because the bread looked good and some folks are really into the free bread at the beginning. We ordered the kale salad with egg (I love anchovy so I really loved this dish), the quinoa salad (decent but it was almost all quinoa), the chicken (very juicy and tender with a heavier sauce) and the corn/tomato pasta with added veal meatballs (definitely a stunner dish). The latter was so simple yet tasty because the ingredients were clearly very fresh and the meatballs were well made. To finish out the meal, we got the strawberry rhubarb panna cotta for dessert which was made very well. While this place certainly is not going to make it to my top favorite restaurants I can't deny it's the perfect setting for a nice girls, date night, family meal.
