Nice rest stop when you go to see Kamehameha's birth place and statue. Food was good but a little pricey. I didn't like the pizza crust on the first taste but it grew on me. Kings view has been in Kohala for years. We have gone to them (and stopped going to them) numerous times over the years. Unfortunately our most recent experience was a reminder why we stopped going , yet again. We ordered a large pizza with pepperoni, olives, and onions. 40 bucks. FORTY DOLLARS for what is most certainly a pre-made frozen crust that is thawed out and some toppings lightly spread over. It looked nice, but that's about it. The crust was somehow chewy and spongy at the same time, and the onions barely cooked, which is also a little confusing. Forty dollars- two slices total eaten, the rest went to the dogs. Keep in mind we can get a bigger pizza with the same toppings AND hand tossed crust, with better tasting ingredients at either KO down the road, and certainly at underground or pau pizza in Waimea for less (including the gas to get there) Would love to keep supporting businesses in town, but they have to provide some kind of value for the product they charge for. And kings view definitely isn't doing that. read more

I was visiting a friend on the Big Island for Thanksgiving and we decided to take a little trip around the island Friday and Saturday. Found this little place on our way to one of my favorite spots. OMG there's probably not enough space here for all the accolades I would give this wonderful little café. I've eaten in four and five star restaurants all over the world and meals by some of Hawaii's finest chefs. I don't think any of them could beat this. The freshest mahi-mahi I've ever had unless it came right off the dock. Fabulous wonderful fresh greens and perfect sticky rice. The portion Was way too much for me to eat in one sitting! I had a great experience with this company. We did not go here for pizza. We came here because it was Sunday and the shaved ice place was closed. They offered shaved ice here but I personally didn't order it. I don't think that's their speciality. We had a 11 & 9 year old with us and they were happy with them. I was happy with my Piña Colada. There is also a restroom here. Single person but definitely not a lot of places to use the restroom on this highway. A lot of them are closed to public use which is rare. Kings View is our go-to anytime we're in North Kohala, whether we're staying awhile or just passing through. We enjoy the food, sitting on the lanai with Kamehameha watching over us from across the street. The service is always friendly, food is cooked fresh and it's a great spot to stretch your legs and soak in some important local history. Pro-tip: If you're on mainland time, getting take-out or just super hungry, call your order in before you arrive, because it can take awhile to make everything to order (most locals do the call-ahead/ take-out option). The pizzas are great, sandwiches tasty and the burgers are top notch, made with local beef. It is as good as it sounds, so try the Mac'n'cheese burger if you're REALLY hungry and feeling indulgent, but be careful not to hurt yourself like my husband nearly did- haha!! Of course, you won't want to forget dessert! We love their pies, but everyone leaving with ice cream cones looked pretty satisfied too. First time when we came I had thoroughly enjoyed mango icecream with real mango chunks in it. It's right across the street and also shares the space with little gift shop. We tried grilled mahi mahi with two scoops of rice and regular fries this time. I must say it's the simplest yet perfectly flavorful preparation I was looking forward to eat. Wife despises fries but she munched on them today. They were right amount of crispy and not refried. The fish was just of the grill fresh and flaky. We went all the way up to drive through rainforest and pretty ranches of Hawaii. The best part of having a plantation style places like these is you get to enjoy those sporadic rains while sitting in verandah. On our way back to Kona we stopped again this time enjoying Kona coffee and Mac nut ice cream. Few light showers and light spray on our sweaty faces in addition to the icecream worked magic. While monsoon season is ongoing in Mumbai(July), Hawaii which is so much like those western ghats of india threw us back a decade. All my monsoon dates had at least one that had icecream and rain combo :) Those who are reading review and belong to western part of India - shout out if you have ever enjoyed icecream/coffee in monsoons with your date !! read more

I mentioned to my friend and her husband that I never been past Waimea on my previous trips to the Big Island. And so we went. That northern strip from Honoka'a to Kapaau, that northern coast area towards Pepekeeo and Hilo, where I don't usually see. A bunch of us decided to take a road trip to celebrate my birthday day and drive the scenic roads while playing Pokémon Go. It was a fun fantastic time to spend my birthday. We ended up here at King's View Cafe for a late lunch. We lost track of time and ended up coming here past 2:45pm. We definitely beat the lunch crowd for sure, where there was just 3 people ahead of us. The restaurant was basically empty and we got a good table to enjoy our food after being on the road for 4 hours starting from Waimea. One item caught my eye was this mac & cheese cheese burger. It sounded strange but it sounded perfect. You normally don't see mac & cheese as a topping for a typical cheese burger. And so, I definitely decided on that one for lunch. They also serve alcohol here, which is awesome. So my lunch here consists of the aforementioned Mac and cheese cheese burger with French fries. And a Kona longboard beer for the drink of choice. The restaurant itself wasn't small but wasn't large either. Had enough space to hold about 30 people at any given time, But with Covid and stuff, it helps to have people spread out if you can. The restaurant itself is clean and well maintained for sure. The mac & cheese Cheese burger is possibly their signature item on the menu. I think it's the popularity that drives people here. The overall experience here at the Kings View Cafe here in Kapaau, HI was nice, cozy, friendly, and quiet. It was nice to have a beer, especially on your actual birthday, which is what I did. Spending it with friends is a good thing too. The service here was good and fast, although typical and friendly too. I was glad that they didn't check ID when I ordered the alcohol. I guess I look that old already. It sucks lol but what can you do? For the most part though, the experience here at the King's View Cafe took about an hour before we headed back on the road slow boating back to Waimea for the night. The pretty cool thing is the famous original King Kamehameha I statue that was literally just across the street. I decided to take a look-see before ordering lunch at the King's view Cafe. For the food though, the pairing of an epic cheese cheeseburger and a beer was delicious and definitely worth it for the birthday lunch. I enjoyed my meal here and definitely a great place for a meal while being adventurous around the northern end of the Big Island. If you're ever around the area of northwest arm of the Big Island, consider coming here for your lunch or dinner. Best to have alcohol or a cold drink with your meal. Kings View Cafe is located at 54-3897 Akoni Pule highway in Kapaau, Hawaii. They're literally across the street from the original King Kamehameha I statue, a tourist iconic site that usually draws a small crowd. They accept major credit cards as well as cash. It was pretty cool that they didn't ask for identification when I ordered my alcohol with my meal. As far as parking goes, there's very limited parking available, maybe up to 5-7 slots at any given time for customers to dine here. Best bet would be to get a rental car, as with the Hele On Bus service, I'm not sure they come this way. Might need to check with them before committing your travel plans. For me though, I enjoyed my time here with friends, excellent Mac and cheese cheeseburger with fries. And the beer was great, especially celebrating my birthday here. If you are road tripping on the big island and want a feel good meal, consider coming through here and stop by the King's View Cafe in Kapaau. You can see the king Kamehameha statue across the street too. Worth the drive? Yes! 4.5 stars for the overall experience. 5.0 stars for the food. 4.0 stars for the friendly service. 4.0 stars for the ambiance. 3.0 stars for the prices, even if it is because of inflation v.2022. Good food, BUT... 1st: We had to wait for 25-30 minutes for our food, had our friends order right after us and their food finally arrived we had already finished eating. 2nd: Half of the menu was out. The rice on half of the menu was "out" even though there was a store down the street. Had my friends order a meal just because it included a salad just for them to tell us they ran out! Why even have it on your menu if it's not going to be available half of the time. 3rd: It felt like we were the employees. We had been hiking all day and were exhausted and hungry. I am so glad that we spontaneously stopped at Kings View Cafe. I ordered a tuna melt and chips. My husband had a veggie sandwich and a side salad. I should have taken a picture to post here. Lunch was delicious. ALSO, the ice cream looked great, but I was too full for dessert. We will go back tomorrow or the next day before going home. I have to try it. The young woman and the counter greeted us in such an friendly manner. I do not want to forget to mention that. It's so important to walk into a restaurant or store and feel welcomed. In addtion, There are a lot of interesting photos on the wall of a celebration of some sort. This is one of those hidden gems everyone finds once in a blue moon when you least expect it. While on a road trip to the North end of the Big Island, my family and I stopped in here for lunch on a Friday around 1pm. The place is located next to the big green historic Bond Library building with plenty of on and off street parking. The cafe was busy with lots of folks eating lunch but no one in line ordering when we walked in. My daughters each ordered a 7" pizza while my wife and I ordered one to split. As they are made fresh, we had to wait 20 minutes for them to come. In the interim, we wandered across the street to see the King Kamehameha statue and senior center. Our favorite of the three pies was the Mac and cheese pizza with pesto. Tasted wonderful and was quite filling. The pepperoni pizza was almost as good with the Kaula Pork pizza our least. Not that it was bad but we would have preferred pizza sauce instead of bbq sauce on it. Maybe we should have ordered the Hawaiian pizza instead. The pies are a good size for one but a little small to share. They have two larger sizes if you are hungry and looking to share. The staff working here were friendly. While eating our pizza, we could hear them singing along to the songs on the radio in the kitchen having fun. Their dining room is a good size and nicely decorated with a clean restroom in the back corner. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. read more

Tipflation! Be prepared for heavy intimidation to pay a healthy tip, without receiving service. Can I choose to tip for good service after recieving the service? Apparently not here! Order your food at the counter, pickup your food at the counter, self-service condiments, throw away your own cardboard containers in self-service trash bins when you're done. What am I tipping for again? Did they sit me at a table, take my order, deliver my food, service my drink, take my dishes away? Nope, but you'll tip as if they do. Being hit so hard so early, I asked what was I tipping for. I was told it was for them to make my food, clean my table, and anything else I needed. This got me to think, does this mean if I pay the listed price, I get raw ingredients cold in a box? I think the aggressive guilting/intimidation by the person taking my order, as they slid the receipt across the counter and circled two suggested tipping amounts with a verbal "to he helpful", prior to getting anything, really set me off. The burger was definitely above average. The table was not that clean, a few crumbs from the previous customer honestly didn't bother me. The ambiance was good. Give an honest price for honest food and I'll pay it. Pay your employees an honest wage and if you want to rely on tips to supplement their wages then provide sit-down service and charge after the meal.
