Finding good, old-school Chinese takeout in Hamilton Heights/West Harlem isn't as easy as it should be, but King's Wok came through. Ordering felt like a trip back to 2006--no website, no apps, just a phone call and cash. A little dated, but they had my food at my door in 25 minutes, so I can't complain too much. They're known for the lo mein, and it lived up to the hype. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and they even threw in a complimentary sweet iced tea. The ordering process could use a refresh, but if you're craving reliable, nostalgic Chinese takeout, King's Wok is definitely worth the phone call lol. read more

NB: This is four stars for a Chinese take out place as opposed to a dining in, table cloth place. AND, the very, very good and the bad: the bad is that the delivery showed up without the two egg rolls i'd ordered and paid for, and the very, very good is that when i called, the person who answered - even before i'd said anything about egg rolls - said, "765, right - i forgot to put the egg rolls in your order." 10 minutes later, the delivery guy showed up again with the egg rolls. No argument, no hassle, just an acknowledgement that they'd dropped the ball and a quick fix. Now, about the food: okay to very good. OK: steamed wontons (too much dough and gummy, but the filling and sauce were good); shrimp with peppery sauce (shrimp were good and abundant, but the sauce iincluded peas - don't think i've ever seen them before at a Chinese restaurant - and needed more hot sauce, of which there was plenty in the delivery bag). Good: Egg rolls (good shell, the red stuff inside is roast pork, nice shredded vegetables); Hot & Sour Soup (has most of the right stuff - more mushrooms, please - but not vinegary enough so I added some and it became very good). Very good + : wonton soup (nice broth that didn't taste canned, tender shell, good filling); Chicken with Garlic Sauce (a lot of chicken, veggies not overcooked, nice sauce but not spicy - again, enough peppery sauce in delivery bag to make it work nicely). Delivery: as promised so that's good. So a couple of things. If you're looking for really spicy food, be prepared to slather on hot sauce. I just love it when I have such a nice woman cooking my food because she puts her own 'jenesequa' into it. You can just tell you're getting good food just on the quality of their white rice , because if that's good then everything else will be too. It's also nice to be around down to earth, caring people. Only visited once, and will likely not visit again. Ordered the chicken fried rice (my benchmark for a good place) and it was dry, overcooked, and not very tasty. A day later I discovered New Taste up two blocks on Broadway, and am much happier with their food. Not giving them 1 star, because I only visited once. read more

After coming to this place for a few times, I've figured that it offers a good budget meal. It can even be healthy depending on the way you order. For example, I ask for steamed veggie and meat with no oil, no salt. The meat is already marinated so it has tastes. When I get home, I sprinkle just a little bit of my miso sauce. It's less then a block away from where I live and I order on the phone and go walk down to get it. By the time I get there it is ready. The people working there are really friendly too. Eat here! Quintessential New York City Chinese food. The store has been there for over a decade, one of few in the area that's been around that long. The woman running it is efficient and the right amount of friendly- she's a marvel. Yes, the food is super greasy and probably filled with MSG, but nobody's pretending that isnt the case, and folks go there specifically for something greasy and mouth-watering, that might make it hard to work out the next day. I work in the neighborhood and don't know what I find so magical about the place. Yesterday I was pretty seriously hungry and happened to be in chinatown before work. I decided to head to work early and go here instead (and I have a Cantonese background and know the best things to get in chinatown). I've only had the beef with broccoli, chicken and broccoli, tofu with mixed vegetables and the half fried chicken but I can honestly say the brown sauce that is used on most dishes is like crack. My Co worker has worked in the neighborhood for close to 30 years and said the owner/woman who works the afternoon till closing has been the same woman since he's been here. The neighborhood used to be the drug capital of the city but now it's finally getting taken over by pilgrims headed north for cheaper rents. Oh, God. My husband and I were starving and thought we'd try to find our local NYC-fast-food place. We had great luck with these places when we lived on W 106, and learned that the outside doesn't always tell you about the food. We ordered here, brought it home. Ate it, unimpressed, but agreed "at least it's filling." We both got sick afterwards. Maybe it depends on what you're used to, but when I open the container and see soggy formerly frozen vegetables, my expectations plummet. *I* could make better Chinese food than this. This is my go-to take out place when I want something affordable and reliable - I swing by on my way home from work probably once a week to get the General Tso's Chicken. I walked in to order, and left with broccoli in garlic sauce with white rice and a roast pork lo mein in about 10 minutes for under $10. Cash only, no online ordering, but no biggie.
