I've been looking for a place open late-ish to get food in Chelsea now that the Malibu Diner is sadly gone. I hadn't been to EDH in a while and was happy to see they do have later hours (with a smaller late night menu). The place was pretty busy at 10:00 PM last Saturday, with a wide range of diners, which is good for business. The food though, at least that night, was really disappointing. My friend had the chicken dumplings. He said they were okay. I thought they were overcooked. My steamed shrimp shumai were fine, but steamed, they didn't have much flavour. The edamame, on the other hand, had way too much when it should have almost none. I don't know if it was excess salt, MSG or something else, but not good. I should have sent them back. I hope this was just an off night for the kitchen.

BBQ Roast Pork. $15.45. Pretty good, but get the ribs instead!

Short review/recommendations: XLB, Hot & Spicy Wontons (mild but excellent,) Honey BBQ Spare Ribs, and Shanghai Style Fried Noodles. Originally opened as a small restaurant in Chinatown on Lafayette, right off Canal, this spot serves Shanghainese and Cantonese food with a wide selection of dim sum. I was here with a very large group a good while back, and the friendly staff was very happy to accommodate all of us, with our group taking up two large tables and then some. They had the typical selection of beers and other soft drinks, but as per usual in less fancy Chinese spots, I stuck with tea. We first received a lot of dim sum. The Steamed Crabmeat & Pork Xiao Long Bao, which includes 6 pieces for $11.95, was above average. The skin was thin, the inside had a good, meaty filling, and the soup was well-flavored, mostly with pork and a bit of crab. It wasn't the best XLB I've had, but it got the job done. Also good was the Hot & Spicy Wonton, made with mixed pork and shrimp and served with hot oil and peanut sauce. These included 7 pieces, and the price at $10.75 was comparable to most Szechuan places. I wish the sauce had been more pungent, but it's a Shanghainese place, so that's a bit more typical. Again, the wrapper was thin, and the filling was generous. For the same price and portion size, you can also order Pork Dumplings, either steamed or fried. We got both, and I, as per usual, preferred the steamed variety. These were more standard but fine, with my definite preference being the other dumplings we had. There was also the Walnut Rock Shrimp. As we ordered 3, I presume it was around $12, but I don't remember the price, and it's not listed on the online menu or in any photos I can find on Yelp. I've never been a huge fan of this dish, as I generally only like the larger prawn variety found in many Cantonese places, where you can taste the shrimp better, but this was good. The batter was light and not overly sweet. We also got two of the siu mei/roasted meats. I don't see the Honey BBQ Spare Ribs listed, but I presume they were around $15 or $16. This was a very tasty version, with the ribs falling off the bone yet retaining some texture. Also, compared to most Chinese-American spots, the ribs weren't overly sweet. The BBQ Roast Pork for $15.45 was alright. I've had this dish from too many spots not to compare it to the better places around Chinatown and other neighborhoods, and this was just OK. I liked the mix of fatty and lean pieces, but the leaner ones weren't super flavorful and were also a bit dry. I wouldn't recommend this as much./ The remaining plates were larger. The Shanghai-Style Fried Noodle, available with a choice of protein, was good for $14.75. The noodles were the best part, with a good wok hei and a nice, slightly chewy texture. I probably would have preferred them with beef or pork, as there wasn't too much shrimp, but otherwise, no real complaints. The Young Chow Fried Rice for $15.25 was, in many ways, the opposite of the noodles. By comparison, the dish had plenty of protein, but the rice itself felt a bit lacking in flavor and wok hei. It was decent For a veggie, there were the Sauteed Snow Pea Leaves With Garlic for $22.75. The leaves were cooked nicely, and there was plenty of garlic flavor. In other words, nothing to complain about and nothing particularly notable, so it was a good standard variant. It was also the expected price for these usually expensive greens. Last was the Sizzling Ginger Beef in Basil Sauce, consisting of beef with ginger, scallion, and onion in basil sauce for $24.75. The beef was tender, but the sauce was a bit milder than expected. It was still tasty, and the portion, as expected for the price, was generous. This is a tasty Chinese place with a couple of excellent dishes. Bumping it up a good amount, given the neighborhood and the general quality as if this was closer to Chinatown, it would be closer to a lower 4/upper 3.

I hadn't been to Excellent Dumpling House in years (it used to be a place I frequented a lot in college, since I went to school nearby), but I decided to go back this past weekend. We went in around 5pm, and there were several open tables. My group of 3 and I were sat right away. The staff is friendly and attentive, and to make it even better, they have spa music playing overhead, making the ambience perfect for a relaxing meal. Since I was feeling a bit under the weather, I got the corn and egg drop soup to start, and the mushroom and vegetable dumplings for my main. The egg drop soup is a delicious classic, and the corn was a nice touch. The mushroom and vegetable dumplings were also amazing, and were flavorful enough without the dipping sauce they give you. It's rare to find vegetarian dim sum options, even though I do love my shrimp dumplings. They were heavenly! If you're in the area and are looking for some high-quality Chinese food at good prices, look no further!

I will be going back in the future. It was good and authentic taste. Felt like I was in china mamas cooking.

This place is true to its name. No lies whatsoever. The dumplings were excellent. If you're in need of a late night dumpling fix, this is the spot. My cousins and I were hanging out late one night and this was one of the only places open late. Service was great and the food came out pretty quick.

This restaurant was right around the corner from my hotel so I decided to give it a try -- & I'm glad I did. Good food and excellent service! They were accommodating with my dad's dietary restrictions/allergies. The crispy chili chicken and steamed dumplings were soo delicious! And of course, I had to get a corn and egg drop soup . The restaurant was spacious, especially for NYC and clean. Not too busy around early dinner time (weekday at 7pm). Yummy, would recommend!

"Pretty good, I'd definitely go back" you should order Hot and Spicy wontons & Crabmeat and Pork Xiao Long Bao. It was Saturday night, I was craving some dumplings and wanted to try somewhere new. Stumbled into Excellent Dumpling House and was greeted and sat immediately. It's a bigger place, with some bigger tables to accommodate bigger parties. We ordered a Sapporo each and hot sake to look over the menu. Menu was pretty big and had lots of options. We ordered the Hot and Spicy Wonton, Crabmeat and Pork Xiao Long Bao, and two specials including the Dan Dan noodles with duck and the honey walnut shrimp. The wontons and the XLB were both amazing. I wanted to order more, but we ordered a lot of food. The shrimp were really good and had big candied walnuts, couldn't stop eating them. The Dan Dan noodles were also not bad, but I wish there had been bigger pieces of duck.

    Fried 7 Pieces Chicken Dumpling

Nope. Not going back despite the extremely competitive prices, which are even cheaper on the delivery apps. They only had the late night menu at 9pm (!), which includes a small assortment of dumplings and soup. No rice items or any appetizers whatsoever. The dining area is large, but severely understaffed. The lady at the counter was overworked but doing an excellent job at managing takeout and dine-in orders, as well as greeting arriving customers. She deserves a raise and a promotion. The food itself was meh. The fried chicken dumplings were soaked in oil, and the shrimp dumplings had no taste barring the shrimp which itself was tasty.

This really takes you back to 1980's Chinese restaurant in a big city feels. Pros: - Massive portions - Tasty meals - Fun 1980's vibes - Everything was "to the point" - Something for everyone Cons: - Spicy chicken lo mein wasn't spicy (for me I guess). I was expecting it to be immediately spicy or a build-up heat and it wasn't. - Servers are a tad rude.I had that they want you in and out feeling. This placed was almost across from our hotel we were staying at. We wanted Chinese food, but didn't want to go all the way out to Chinatown because that's a nice little trek from Chelsea. Everything here was really solid. Nothing necessarily blew my mind - but that's okay. It was very, very good flavors/textures. This placed is no frills and I'll keep my review as such. I'd recommend it if you're in the area.

Love love love this spot! I came here twice so far and both times I ordered the scallion pancakes and soup dumplings and it's the best taste for the best price in Chelsea! Also the waiter we had was super attentive and nice to us and even spoke to us about his favorite dishes. (He usually has the orange chicken with the sauce on the side so it stays crunchy- I'm trying that next time!) we ordered the orange chicken and it was tasty and crunchy and I love the pineapples with the dish too. We also have the veggie dumplings which were a great deal too. Such a nice lowkey spot that gets busy on weekends but so worth it!!! I will be back!

An inconspicuous hole-in-the-wall joint that specializes in dumplings (apparently) and lunch specials (along with takeout). Cheap lunch specials $9.99 dine in. Twice cooked pork 回锅肉: 1/5 tbh I thought the waiter mistakenly brought my order bc it was unrecognizable. Not to mention it was extremely greasy. Chicken cutlet 鸡排 was very good and flavorful. Honestly I wish I got this. Potstickers were pan fried and were very good--homemade and lots of filling.

Pork Xiao Long Bao, shrimp dumplings, shu mai
    Melissa W.

Came on a Saturday for lunch before leaving on a flight home. Ordered a Peking duck spring roll, the pork XLB, shrimp dumplings, and shu mai. It was all tasty. Didn't have any issues getting a table at noon here for a group of 3. Service was fine from some and friendly from one guy. Kind of what I'd expect at a Chinese restaurant though. When I visit NY, I try to stay in/near Chelsea, so I'd definitely come back! The pork XLB here is BIG and has lots of soup! That was the highlight for me.

There was a wait list to get seated when we arrived but the process was simple and moved quickly, and service was prompt and food came out quickly. We ordered both the standard pork XLB and my faves, the pork and crab ones, as well as pan fried pork dumplings which I was surprised to discover were also full of soup, chicken corn dumplings, and two noodle dishes: rice cake with pork & mustard greens, and pan fried noodles with beef. Servers were conscientious about allergies and very specific about letting us know which items were which, but other than that were largely appropriately hands off. They did ask us, mid-meal, if it would be ok if a service dog were at the next table to ours, which I thought was courteous. (The service dog was adorable and well behaved.) All the food was fab, which we expected. It's nice to come in a group and be able to order more items for a greater variety. The rookies executed well (and thanked us for the instructions on how to eat XLB to avoid getting soup everywhere) and were pleasantly surprised by my longtime favorite, the rice cake and mustard greens. I'll need to remember that the pan fried pork dumplings also have soup, because I really liked the texture of them. Such good food, and as always, better shared with friends.

While the food also came out quickly, our drinks came out towards the end of our meal. It's a good spot for big parties as it never got too busy even on a Saturday night. They also have private rooms. The live music was fun, but also made it hard to have conversation.
