What a day! To be honest, this was my friend's idea. I wasn't sure wanted to do it. It ended up being one of the highlights of our trip! Riding around in the ATV was fun. I drive a jeep at home, so I'm not easily impressed with that mine is tourist thing, but I will admit it was really cool being able to go through some beautiful sites this way. There were quite a number of stops that were very worthwhile. Our local guides told their stories and told us what we were looking at. Pure beauty that is not accessible any other way! (Kipu Ranch is private) We took the waterfall tour and at the end we were able to go in. If you take that tour, get in the water. You need to! It's incredibly beautiful. For the past six years my husband and I have had the privilege of calling Kauai home. He has been wanting to do the Kipu Ranch Adventures since we first moved. Ryan our lead guide was very knowledgeable about the area that we traveled through and to. He took the time to explain the proper use of the Teryx4 so not only were we safe but also the rest of our tour group. We went on a day that was sunny but also raining at times. Well, if you are an adventure seeker, want to see a strikingly beautiful part of the island that isn't frequented by most and are a movie nerd, I've got the thing for you. There are two conditions- you will have to be a fun loving person and you WILL get dirty! We arrived after a morning of on and off again rain to Kipu Ranch, a 3000 acre privately owned property in Eastern Kauai. The property stretches from the Huleia River to the top of 1,286-foot Mount Haupu and was once owned by Island royalty. We drove in a little after 1pm for our 1:30 "Triple Trail Adventure", Kauai's premiere eco tour, also recognized as the "Best Tour Company in Hawaii" by USA Today. This is one of two tours offered by Kipu Ranch Adventures who is allowed to operate on the privately owned property. After checking in and being told we were going to be lucky to get to go out with "the local boys", we were seated at a picnic table and given granola and Kipu ranch bandanas and offered eyewear and helmets. They require closed toe shoes (we wore Keen sandals) and recommend bringing wick clothing that can get stained, a water bottle, sunscreen, protective eyewear if you don't want to wear theirs (sunglasses are fine), bug spray (needed! unless wearing long sleeves and pants), a change of clothes/swimsuit and towel. We packed all this plus my Northface hip pack, which was indispensable on this vacation, to pack my phone, keys and go pro. We were going to divide and conquer. SO would drive and I would try to get some footage to remember our experience with, both of us using our best talents, but you can have multiple driver's if they hold a valid license. A line of Kawasaki TERYX4's were lined up, gleaming in front of us proudly, in great condition and looked new. With a 783cc V-Twin engine and seating for 4, these are perfect for the versatile terrain that we were about to conquer. We were introduced to Mana and Giggles, our guides, given some safety instructions and were OFF, immediately puddle railing as we started our journey. The first pass through a tree tunnel and views of cattle grazing in everlasting fields brought us to a clearing where we got treated to stories of the history of the property and the island as well as some of the films made on the ranch like The Descendants, Hook, Pirates of the Caribbean, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park. Along this tour, we were shown locations where individual scenes were filmed. We loved our guides. Like us, they have a passion for promoting small local businesses and preserving the culture of their home. It was fascinating and heartbreaking to hear from locals the plight of the islanders and local farmers to continue to live and survive on the island due to higher costs of living and developments/ property being purchased for high dollar. They educated us and gave amazing recommendations for anything that they were asked. After getting back on the trail, splattered red mud kissing our calves and arms as we careened over streams, ruts and roots and through the jungle, the real driving began. They recommended that the less experienced drivers started this journey, and that the experienced drivers take the second half. You had to admire the way these UTV's handled the riddled ride of this puddled, uneven and rutted terrain. We took our time on the difficult parts. It was an awesome experience! We came to another clearing and an absolutely incredible view. We were on a cliff overlooking Menehune Fishpond and a field of taro plots. We stopped to rest for a while and were educated on the conservation efforts being done on the island as well as local food recommendations to try things that the guides grew up with. Simply a stunning area. The final stop on the tour before turning back is a private waterfall in a forest of giant bamboo. One calm days, there is a swimming opportunity, but due to the rainfall that they were experiencing in February, we just got to admire the falls after climbing down to the base line, and take pictures with the bamboo that was so gigantic, SO's basketball hand spread wasn't as wide! Upon arriving back, we parked our vehicles, turned in our gear, and thanked are guides. They do accept Venmo if you forgot to bring cash for tips. Just a reminder that many people on the island rely on your hospitality as their means to survive and stay there. read more

Mano and Ryan were awesome guides! They got great stories! The ride itself was so much fun! We went with a group of friends, we had 3 UTVs. It had rained the day before and was sprinkling off on and that day... that means there was lots of mud!! So many muddy puddles, It was great. The unfortunate thing is that at the end, the waterfall was muddy too. Don't forget your camera!! The sites were amazing. So many beautiful views. Definitely bring sunscreen and bug repellent! This was one of the funnest things I've ever done!! An absolute MUST! It is so fun to drive the ATV's and then getting to go deep into the Kauai back country is just spectacular! Our guides "Giggles" and David were fantastic and shared so much with us about the Hawaiian history of the area. Heed all the suggestions and warnings about clothes getting covered in mud - they will! They provided bandanas which were a godsend and also goggles which helped so much. Best tour I have done. I did the water fall tour and it was amazing, super friendly staff and fun as well. I did the tour in Oahu and it doesn't compete to this one. Just an FYI you will get dirty and maybe wet. At the end of the tour you can jump into the waterfall as well. HOLY COW, this was the most amazing thing I did while in Kauai. First off, the guides from and back were funny and informative and also helpful because one person took a wrong turn which made everyone after follow. they found us and put us back on track and even had a good laugh about it. The info they shared was so interesting and the respect they had for the land was humbling and it just filled my soul with happiness. But the ride, oh let me tell you, we had one heck of a ride but it was sweet. The suspension on these is amazing and the fun we had was overwhelming. They cared about our fun, our safety and making sure we also had a respect for the land just as we should the entire time. This is something i am going to do again and again each and every time I visit. He keeps everyone safe while being entertained. The ATV cars they use are the most updated model. It's very clean and easy to drive. They prepared snacks and bandanas as a gift for all guests. They explained everything clearly to everyone to ensure it will be a safe and enjoyable journey for all. We chose the ranch tour and which last 3 hours. My wife & I went on an ATV tour with Kīpū Ranch & we had Kyle & Cousin Kimo (I hope I spelled that correctly) as our guides. We had an incredible time. It was such a great day. Kyle & Kimo really took their time to make sure that anyone who had never driven an ATV felt comfortable. I have driven them plenty of times, so they were able to educate the new, yet keep it fun & engaging for those of us who already had experience. For anyone that is going, wear clothing that you do not care if it gets dirty, because it will. You will get filthy, but every minute of that time is fun. Make sure you ask for Ryan and Cousin Giggles to be your tour guides. They were so informative and a BLAST! We signed up for the Waterfall Triple Trail Expedition and had a muddy good time! It rained the day before but our morning was beautiful and sunny! My husband and I both took turns driving about half way through and it was pretty easy to learn the ropes and our guides gave great instruction. Don't expect to be out there doing donuts or anything. Just a fun drive through the beautiful terrain, with some fun trails along the way. Loved the beautiful sights and the rich history shared by our guides.
