Kirkland Transmission was the 4th repair shop I visited in my 8 month odyssey to find the cause of the noise coming from the right rear end of my high mileage '94 Miata. It had been variously diagnosed as coming from the right rear wheel bearing but changing the bearing made no difference in the sound. The most experienced mechanic thought it was a problem with the differential and others thought the transmission was to blame as it only happened in second gear at around 3000 RPM. Some shops said there was nothing wrong with it and walked away. Others just referred me on to someone else which is how I came to be on Tony's doorstep. I was beginning to think I would have to just drive it until something fell off or broke and then I would know for sure, but Kirkland Transmission came so highly regarded I just had to give them a try. With the first test drive Tony couldn't hear anything wrong either but to his credit he asked me to demo the noise. I was barely out if the lot when he said he heard it. The appointment was scheduled and an hour later the problem was fixed. The noise came from the exhaust pipe rubbing against the body of the car, but only when the harmonic vibration was amplified by RPM and motion of the car. He made a simple repair and only charged me for an hour labor. Tony never gave up and was committed to the highest standard of excellence. My 2003 VW Jetta was doing a hard shift between gears. I brought it to a different mechanic who specialized in VW's, but was told that I needed to build a new transmission, but they couldn't guarantee that it would last longer than a year. They suggested we give up on the car and get a new one. Unsatisfied with that answer, I gave Kirkland Transmissions a call. Tony hooked the car up to a computer, ran some tests, and discovered that there was a speed sensor error. But when he methodically ran more tests, he found that it was a computer error. The car's problem was tricky and hard to pinpoint, but Tony treated my car as he would his own and did not give up until he found the source of the problem and the solution that worked. Stopped in to find out about getting service, and the person we spoke with very curtly informed us that he was booked out a couple of weeks, and we should try somewhere else. My perception was that he just didn't even want the job because he was so eager to direct me to go elsewhere. I can understand if he's booked up, but it was the way in which the message was delivered. It was the tone, the attitude, the curt one sentence response, and he didn't even bother to ask if I was willing to wait for a couple of weeks to have the work done. Took my car in for diagnosis of a slight manual transmission noise. Tony took the time to take a long enough drive with me to hear the noise. Kirkland Transmission was recommended by another reputable repair shop in Kirkland area, and I'm happy to have taken my Land Rover here! Even though it technically wasn't the transmission that croaked, Tony agreed to take a look at it and let me know what it might be. I originally thought the rear diff and just wanted to know before committing to a potentially expensive repair. Turned out to be the transfer case and coupling. The coupling had to be ordered from the UK! I found the communication to be precise and professional, and the labor costs were very reasonable given what had to be done. The original estimate was accurate as well. There is even a 12 month warranty on parts and labor! My mechanic recommended I bring my 2008 Mazda in for an inspection as he thought I had a leak but didn't do the work. I was nervous that it would be an expensive repair. Called ahead to get an appointment for a rather expensive repair on my main crank seal that seemed to be leaking badly. Tony said he'd check things out to make sure my shade-tree mechanic diagnosis was correct. Turns out I should spend more time under the tree, less under the hood. Tony found the leak was from the oil pressure sender, not the rear main seal. At less than 1/3 the cost for the expected repair, all is right in the world again. Tony went the extra mile, cleaned the PCV valve which was carbon'd up, and gave me some options to consider as the transmission is showing signs of age. I was recommended this shop by a friend. I took it in for a very simple, but cumbersome seal replacement. Tony quoted up to $90 plus tax to do it, which is reasonable. I got the bill for $136 plus tax. If I ran my business 66% over quoted pricing, I'd not last too long. I can understand overages, and a phone call describing them, but there was zero communication. I really like Kirkland Transmission, it reminds me of one of those auto shops from the 70's that really lives and breathes for great customer service. They don't believe in nickle-and-diming you to death. I found this place after reading the positive reviews on Yelp. I had just received a crazy cost estimate from the dealer and I wanted a second opinion. After speaking with Tony, I decided to let them rebuild my tranny but there was just one problem...my insurance company. I have mechanical breakdown insurance and they were being beyond difficult covering a portion of the cost. After a full three or four days of speaking and arguing with multiple reps, Tony was able to get my insurance company to cut a check for a larger amount than my mother and I could negotiate (keep in mind that we are both darn good negotiators). Their transmission warranties are better than any others than I have seen. If you're looking for a new auto repair place, try this place out. They are nice, fair, and really take pride in their work. They do good work. They repaired the torque converter and pump on my bmw transmission before. Price came out a lot more than the initial quote, but they didn't overcharge or anything. First experience was okay. I called today to get a quote or an idea on transfer case on my classic rangerover. Tony was being a straight dick to me over the phone, basically won't give me much idea even though I'm telling him what's wrong with it, he was keep persisting to give a quote saying they won't know unless they open it up to diagnose. Well for fcks sake I just wanted to know how much it would cost if the viscous coupling was bad. Doesn't matter if something else is broken, thats later problem. I had them do a complete engine and transmission replacement in my mini van. Very nice dealing with Tony, the shop manager. They came in under my expected costs (which I will not post, it may seem high to many people). They sourced very good parts, rebuilt engine and transmission and had a good combination of quality and value. I am a gearhead but I really did not have time for this job. I am surprised at how well it is running over the past four months. They even cleaned and vacuumed the car. They are very responsive on the phone and kept me updated with several progress reports because it took a week to do the work. One minor quality issue was that they missed tightening some support frame bolts...I had some clunking when cornering on my second day driving the car. But I found the problem myself and tightened them myself. If I had brought it back to them, I have no doubt that they would have found it fast and got it all straightened out for free. read more

As a business owner I know that customer service can be difficult to achieve - in other words it is difficult to make everyone happy. Having said that - as a consumer I feel that I am very understanding of this fact. The phone call that I just made to Kirkland Transmission was very unsettling. In 2013 I had a transmission replaced which was a couple thousand dollars. Today (yes 3 three years later) - 30 thousand miles later my clutch is fried. Essentially I spent the conversation conveying this fact- to be told that my driving must have changed - and that this is the reason. I have been driving for 30 years of my life ( so no my driving hasn't changed!) - followed by " it doesn't matter anyway - its out of warranty. Well thanks for the lecture on my driving patterns! A reasonable approach would have been -" yes that is low miles- lets take a look at the components". No- the conversation was condescending and rude. I highly do not recommend. Whoever is answering the phone may want to brush up on his approach to clients. read more
