I have been a customer at this bakery for 40+ years. I haven't been there very much in the past couple of years, and was excited to visit recently, and have some of my all-time favorites. My first disappointment was the chocolate doughnuts. I know of no other bakery anywhere that had better chocolate doughnuts than Kirschbaum's. From the first bite, I knew this was different than the doughnuts they used to have. Their chocolate icing used to be the best. Their current icing is maybe mediocre. Even the doughnut itself tasted different, and not for the better. The next time, I picked up some mini chocolate eclairs and mini pecan tarts. Again, the chocolate icing tasted completely off, and the custard filling in the eclair was also not very good. All I can say about the pecan tarts was that they tasted vaguely as if they had freezer burn. The one other item I purchased that I always loved was the rye bread. It was every bit as delicious as I remembered. So I will return for the bread, but as for the other items, I won't waste my money. read more

I love Kirschbaum's white-on-white cake -- never any problem with dryness or taste. Delicious cookies, great kolachke. Taste-wise and price-wise, this is a great bakery. But ... I won't be going here anymore because of the no-credit-or-debit-card policy. Maybe 15-20 years ago this kind of policy was understandable, but today? Come on. No, it's not that hard to stop by a bank first, and I've done it, but it really makes me pause. In today's day and age a policy like this speaks volume's about the company's priorities. I can only assume what their reasons are -- don't want to pay the extra fees, too much hassle, too much extra work -- none of which say anything to me except that their own comfort and convenience come ahead of the customers'. In fact, last time I went in there, there was a sign up saying "Singles needed" -- they can't even be bothered to be prepared for their customers. In my own business, I always try to put my customer's needs first, and I appreciate and patronize businesses that do the same for me. There are too many other wonderful bakeries out there. read more

This is the BEST bakery! HOWEVER, I must disagree that Yelp says that the bakery takes credit cards (debit cards). They ONLY take cash or checks when you go in, This is ok except that I never carry cash or my check book and this is kind of a pain- especially if you wait to be helped (there is ALWAYS a long line). For 22 years my family has made this bakery a necessity of the Christmas holiday. This year that tradition was broken and will NEVER come again. I have never, in my life, been treated so rudely by both staff and the female manager. We have kept this tradition to support the local business and the joy it used to bring. NOW I insist, anyone who has been loyal to look up Toni & Marie in Hinsdale. They bent over backwards to accommodate us this Christmas and salvage the situation. The baked goods were even better than at kirschbaums. For an upcoming family wedding I will be insisting on Toni & Marie over this group of rude and inconsiderate people. NEVER AGAIN! read more

So, last saturday I and a sibling when on a bakery tour (spree?), and Kirshbaum's was our second stop. Saturday afternoon, and their donut's were sold out. Hmmm, will have to come back to try those. What I did end up trying was the eclair and the Cannoli cake. The Cannoli cake was layered sponge cake with interspersed layers of mascarpone-whipped cream. The texture of this was great, but the taste wasn't the most pronounced. With a little espresso powder and a little work, this could have probably been turned into a divine Tirimasu cake. The eclair was the cream-filled variety (as opposed to custard), with a thin stream of chocolate mousse underneath the profusion of whipped cream filling. The pate-a-choux which comprised the body of the eclair was good - it had a little flakiness to it but had enough stiffness that it retained it's shape as it was being consumed. The items we tried here were good, and I'll certainly be back earlier in the morning to attempt to try their donuts/pastries, but not the best bakery I ate at that day... read more

We love Kirschbaums! We are from the UK and until we discovered Kirschbaums we were longing for bakery bread from back home! Their potato bread is fantastic, we buy unsliced and cut our own large slices for yummy toast. Their chocolate chip coffee cake is amazing and so are their little cream cakes! The staff are super friendly and get to know you, they know what I'm going in for every time!! The really deserve their three week vacation but I will miss them! *making room in the freezer for all my potato bread!* read more

Their baked goods are delicious. Best chocolate iced donuts and chocolate coffee cake I've ever tasted. I also love the dainties. Ordered a wide variety of pastries for a brunch and everyone raved about them. The only improvement I would like to see is more organized way to ring everyone up in a small space. I was currently visiting my home town and stopped in at my favorite childhood place, Kirschbaums Bakery. I hadn't been there since I've been working as a food critic and I was excited to see what they've done with the place. I walked in and immediately was hit with the sweet smell of baked goods which made me happy and hungry. The place looks and feels the same, which is a good thing because it is very old fashioned and places like that are rare these days. I usually stick to a low fat and sugar diet but I allowed myself one cheat day! I tried every single one of the tea cookies. My favorite was the Swedish dream and the coconut pink and green chocolate drizzle. If you are looking for something with out nuts then I would go with the nonpareils or the pink, green, and chocolate drops. The donuts were phenomenal. They said that they were surprised to have some left after 9:00 a.m. I got the chocolate cake donut as well as some glazed and cinnamon sugar donut holes. I was simply in heaven! I then went on to try the chocolate cake drop. I do not think it is the most popular item, and in that case they are understated. The moist chocolate cake is covered in a perfect coat of chocolate fudge. I could eat endless amounts if my body would let me. I truly don't have a least favorite thing in that bakery. I love the pies, cakes, coffeecakes (chocolate chip, cinnamon, raspberry, and cheese are my personal favorites), dainties, bread, donuts, sweet rolls, cookies, you name it!! I believe that the TRUE money maker of this place does not lie in the food, but the heart of the business. The workers are cheerful and happy to see you right when you walk in. It seems they never get impatient. They are ALWAYS consistent! They are family run shop and you can tell the amount of effort that is put in just so that we can all enjoy their wonderful treats. There is no doubt in my mind that this place is my favorite bakery and childhood memory. If you're ever in town, this is NOT something you want to pass up! read more

I have been in love with Kirschbaum's since I was a little kid. The tea cookies (especially the sprinkle cookies!), the coffee cakes (esp. the chocolate chip!) and the birthday cakes are particularly wonderful. Their buttercream frosting is soooo addictive-- especially coupled with the light, tasty white cake. I got my wedding cake and cupcakes here and everyone was blown away by how good they were! read more

I started going to Kirschbaum's in 1972, since my ex husband lived in Western Springs. We had them make our wedding cake. Simply delicious! Over the years I would travel from Naperville to Western Springs once a month to stock up the freezer with bread and coffee cakes. I now live in Florida and have been back to Kirschbaum's a couple of times in the last 7 years. I wish there was some way I could get them to ship to me. Thank you for being in business all these years and making my 2 boys very happy, and now the grandkids. read more

Kirschbaum's is an old school mom and pop bakery and everything in there tastes wonderful and fresh. I think at least as good as Webbers bakery. It's off the beaten path tucked in downtown Western Springs. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because they run out of doughnuts in the morning if you don't get there before like 9:30 am. So if you don't get up early at the crack of dawn you may not get what you want. You can call in and order ahead to make sure you get your doughnuts the next day but seriously....if you're running a store with something you produce you KNOW is in demand why not make a lot more rather than let it run out? If you end the day with some in inventory just package it and sell it the next day at a slight mark-down, or donate it to the police station, or send the inventory to the grocery store down the street to sell it..... you know people will always buy bakery doughnuts. read more
