I just ate the best donut of my life. My coworker treated us to Kirschbaum's in honor of a birthday and what a special treat. It is a cake style donut with chocolate icing. It is moist, dense and delicious (none of that overly sweet, my teeth feel like falling out Krispie Cream BS). Everything a donut should be! you guys need a better system. I ordered a cake for 7am. it's already paid for but I had to wait behind 30 other people. you should periodically ask if anyone is picking up a prepaid order. I'm not the only one. why should I wait an hour for something that is just sitting on a shelf. I had to leave without my cake and now my students wont have their Mardi gras cake. I feel like I am the outsider here in the ratings... I just am floored that sooo many people feel that this bakery is the bomb. Is it old school, yes. Does it have beautiful decorated (80's style) cakes and cookies. Yes. But seriously, the taste is generic and just sugary. Soooo...the first time I stopped in here, the place was bare bones! I mean they literally had like nothing to chose from, but now looking back, it was only like a half an hour before they were closing, so I decided to give them another chance thanks to Yelp and people's awesome reviews! =]] My mom and I went on a Saturday at around 3:30 and they were STOCKED with delicious looking bakery items! Think, butter cookies, coffee cakes, doughnuts, kolacky, mini cheesecakes and other minis, breads and lots more! We tried some butter cookies, cake pops, kolacky (cheese and raspberry), a cake pop and some minis including cheesecakes. The minis and kolacky were good but nothing spectacular and the cake pop (which was chocolate cake with white chocolate on the outside) was strange in that it definitely had coconut of some kind inside but that was not listed in the description which I thought was weird. But those butter cookies...OMG...they are SOOO good!! You can tell they used salted butter in the recipe (unless they use a good helping of salt) which I LOVE LOVE LOVE! They were super buttery and with that saltiness...Mmmmm. And the ones topped with a dollop of dark chocolate were definitely my favorite since the chocolate was just that, real melted chocolate. Nothing fake or artificial about it...just melt in your mouth real chocolate...it was SO good...there really are no words to describe the deliciousness that was that chocolate topped cookie. Yum! I was writing a review for another bakery in Chicago when my mind drifted to this joy. Kirschbaums is my childhood and has carried me in to adulthood. Well basically their doughnuts! Do not get me wrong: cookies, cakes, coffee cake, breads are all superb. I have friends that when they come to visit me in Chicago require this to be present if we go visit my folks in the suburbs. Apparently, this bakery does not consider the customer always right. My wife purchased a cake for my birthday yesterday as we do twice a year for our birthdays' for the last 5 years. The cake was stale. Upon returning it we were told the owner would get back to us later that day with a response. The owner argued with my wife and told her they tasted the cake and it was fine. Refused a full refund, did not offer a new cake and didn't even offer to return the old cake. Terrible customer service! We will never patronize the bakery again. What a shame to lose a customer over a $20 cake. read more

The first Thanksgiving I met my boyfriend's family, I impressed them with my skill of picking out damn good rolls. and so a tradition began. Every family event, I bring rolls. I choose a different bakery and try to impress some of my toughest Irish critics. This year I went with Kirschbaum's. They are cute and local. We had ordered Paczki's from there a few years ago that boyfriend's family loved so this seemed like a must win. Kirschbaum's has a fantastic website. I was able to not only order my rolls beforehand but also pay in advance. This was a very nice touch! I like being able to order ahead and pay in advance so that I can send someone to pick up my order. This is especially beneficial for parents sending their kids or someone ordering from the bakery who doesn't live in the area but wanting someone who lives there to pick it up for them. In this situation, the website told me that they were open until 6 pm on Wednesdays. I ordered my rolls well in advance and presumed that they were going to be open until 6 that day. I noted on my order that it would be picked up at 4:45 pm. At 4:10 pm, I received an email from the bakery telling me they would be closing at 4 and would only be able to stay about 15 more minutes. At first, I was furious when I saw this 20 minutes later. My boyfriend left to pick up the rolls. What if there was traffic? We aren't going to have rolls! I received a follow-up email within a minute of my seeing the initial email that said she could not wait later than 4:45. I tried to call the bakery to no avail. Fortunately, my boyfriend got there and they were waiting for him with the rolls already to go. It was fantastic that they noticed my pick-up time at the last minute and ended up staying the extra 40 minutes for him to pick up the rolls. The rolls were fantastic! But the standout of the experience is the customer service and that amazing website. read more

Ordered by phone a chocolate Easter lamb cake with white buttercream frosting. Saturday afternoon before Easter I picked it up. Upon cutting a slice from the rear end of the lamb it didn't look anything like any chocolate cake I knew and the frosting was questionably buttercream in my book. It was very sweet and sugary. The cake itself looked like spice cake, was dry, and sorry to say, not delectable in the least. IF IT WAS TASTY WE WOULD HAVE KEPT IT AND ATE IT!!! But it wasn't! Instead I drove 4 miles one way to bring it back the same day. The clerk immediately opened the box and pronounced nothing was wrong with it. I explained my reasons for not being happy with it and her response was to go on the defensive immediately and want to argue and disagree with me. Clearly was offended by not hearing anything not positive and gushing. The clerk said it was a chocolate pound cake which it was why it looked lighter brown etc etc., absolutely nothing wrong with the buttercream frosting and offered a egg shaped cake in exchange. When I placed the order the clerk did not inform me Easter Lamb cakes were not regular chocolate cakes but pound cakes so how was I to know? I was dumb founded. Did the clerk (older woman with blonde hair - maybe a family member) think I had ESP or other special abilities to know what kind of cakes they had if the original clerk didn't tell me? Most folks when they call up and order a chocolate cake it is a regular chocolate cake and the person wouldn't think to ask if it was a pound cake. I wasn't even aware of such a thing as a chocolate pound cake. Nevertheless, Kirschbaum's would only give me an Easter egg cake in exchange whose price was approx half of the $23.95 (plus tax) lamb cake I paid for. She refused to refund the difference. So if you buy Kirschbaum's food and don't think it tastes good or correct information was not given when you ordered it, well, tough luck!!! Buyer Beware! It seems not only can they not accept negative feedback they certainly don't aim for customer satisfaction either. She then offered me the lamb cake back. As others have noted, this store exhibits poor to no customer service. I have been at restaurants, chain and family owned, who ask if they noticed you didn't eat much of the food - if you liked it and if you said no they asked what else you might want, no charge. They don't argue, hassle or try to defend their food. They are classy places. (In the case of this Lamb cake I am pretty sure nothing but STARVING raccoons would eat it.) The aforementioned business and restaurant owners realize the value of a happy customer and good will. From now on my family will just go to Kirsten's or Vesecky. Kirschbaum's has a revolving door of clerks, (except one or two)who aren't properly trained or knowledgeable about their bakery goods to say nothing of in good customer service skills. Losing a 40 year customer over what amounts to a (rare but occasionally) unsatisfactory product, and $12.00 would not be considered wise business practice anywhere. Poorly run business. (By the way, I have never complained here about anything before tho a couple of times I purchased less than fresh baked goods) The shabby behavior of the clerk I experieced matches the shabby interior of the store! I always hear great things about this place and I was so dissapointed when I finally went in. No one was there and there were two girls behind the counter, one who was sweeping so i didnt expect her to help me right away and another who stared at me. When I told her I was ready she kind of looked upset. I asked for a few danishes that she made VERY sure I knew they were called "Sweet rolls, not danishes". She threw them into a bag. They were meh. Then I asked her what a good coffeecake would be and she made some kind of joke that I look like the type of person that would like chocolate or something like that. That made me feel uncomfortable. Anyway, I asked her to package me some petit fours in seperate boxes and she mentioned and extra price which I didnt care about. They were like sugar on a stick, not worth it. Finally, I started asking her about cake. I had my niece with me and my niece started telling the girl that she wanted pink but the girl rudely told my niece to quiet down because the grown ups were talking. What? She was the one who was going to choose what she wanted. I told her it was okay, I'll save it for another time. She kind of eyed me and said probably for the best. I got her name, jill or jilli something like that and I called with my story. They apologized and said they would handle the situation but when I went back a few weeks later, she was still there giving me a stink eye. If it wasnt for her, I think I could have really enjoyed this bakery. You can find better food and better service somewhere else. read more

I happened to be in the neighborhood and as I am a sucker for a bakery, I headed in. It was crowded (take a number) but the goodies were well worth the wait. I bought a strawberry whipped cream cake and a raspberry coffee cake (should have bought 2 of these). I spent over $20, but would do it again in a heartbeat...and get 2 coffeecakes! Love love love this place! The sugar cookies are to die for! We've also had a canoli cake and a few other assorted items and they've all been excellent. I don't know why bakeries are closed on Mondays (as if Monday isn't the day when you need a treat the most!) but that's really my only complaint. This bakery is both scrumptious and affordable, a hard combo to find! I've grown up on Kirschbaum's and love to recommend it to others! My favorite are the tiny lemon cups (79cents each). I wanted to use this bakery for my wedding but they close for 2 weeks over the summer and it overlapped with the date, bummer. Whenever I bring something from Kirschbaum's to work or a party or just home, the box is empty as soon as it hits the table. It always feel great to bring something special that people are blown away by and Kirschbaum's does that for me. I strongly suggest the petit fours, eclairs and the lemon & cherry cups. I grew up on their eclairs and they are just as good now as I remember from the 60's. Coffee cakes are excellent too. They used to make clams but now you have to special order to get them. It's a shame because people are missing out on a great treat! They are made out of I think a puff pastry dough, flaky with crystal sugar on top, shaped like a clam. Filled with whipped cream and strawberries. What's not to like? Also their chocolate iced cake donuts are awesome! read more

My daughter-in-law had a baby shower in town and I was looking for a bakery nearby. I was fortunate enough to find this bakery ( we are from NY )-we ordered 50 vanilla and choc cupcakes with vanilla icing that was out of this world!! So many people asked which bakery they were from-very moist and delicious with wonderful icing. We went back and picked up more! We also picked up cannoli's that also got rave reviews! I would absolutely rec this bakery and would go back if we were to come back to this area!!! read more

Really miss this place, was walking around downtown in the city I live in now and the aroma reminded me of this bakery. No donut or sweet shop I've been to here in California has lived up to the standards set at Kirschbaum's. The donuts are unparalleled - especially the chocolate cake ones, but the powdered and apple are good too.
